Bison to become first national mammal, joining bald eagle as American symbol

>Congress has passed legislation, the National Bison Legacy Act, which names the hoofed beast as a “historical symbol of the United States” and establishes it as the nation’s landmark mammal.

>“The bison will serve as a great national symbol for the United States as it is as strong as the oak, fearless as the bald eagle and inspiring as a rose”

Yellowstone's actually notable for having quite a large bison population. Inevitably, some stupid fucker gets charged or worse every year for thinking they're totally docile.

And they basically don't give a fuck. They'll hang out on roads, walk through campsites, whatever unless you piss them off.

And yes, bison is commonly served around the park. And no, the act of Congress doesn't make eating them illegal or some shit like that. It's just saying they're America, fuck yeah.

Eat your bison jerky and be content.

Actually there aren't any.

They're all on managed populations on reserves or parks. Bison are effectively extinct, in the wild in the USA. Supposedly, there are still 10k left.

It's not a semantic difference, by the way (extinct in the wild while still living on reserves and in parks). They are extinct in the wild because, without directed conservation efforts, they would all die. Something that has a viable population, in the wild, is something that can do fine if humans ignore it. Bison would be extinct, if ignored, so they're extinct in the wild.

So if they're in a park, they're not wild? The reason bison don't do well outside of parks is because they have large migration routes and agricultural areas and highways/interstates don't match up well with this. If they didn't feed them in parks, their population would certainly be lower or they would over tax their food supply, but I seriously doubt they would go extinct unless they began to be overhunted again.

>So if they're in a park, they're not wild?
If the populations are actively managed, and dependent on that management for their continued viability. Not just being in a park is necessarily enough to classify them as vulnerable, under the IUCN. It's that the populations are actively being managed and aren't viable without the active management.

But it's also because of the restrictions that have them limited to these disconnected areas, without migration routes between them.

Nice way to truncate the quote and pretend it said something else.

Effectively extinct IN THE WILD, is not the same as effectively extinct.

>The total number of mature individuals in wild free-ranging and semi-free-ranging populations is estimated to be approximately 11,250 and only 5 subpopulations have more than 1,000 individuals, thus making this species nearly qualify for Vulnerable C2a(i). The species is not currently in decline but wild mature individuals could be greatly reduced if current management regimes are changed. This is a conservation dependant species.

Conservation dependent. They can't survive without active conservation efforts. The wild populations are not viable.
>>
>>72273245
so an animal that has come back up to 11k (source that) from fuck all of nothing is non-viable?

and 11k as a wild population is effectively extinct, especially when there are another half million fucking around on private land?

what planet are you coming from here?

exactly what 'active intervention' do these animals require? because unless you're holding its dick during an artificial insemination program there really isn't any.

You can go read the report from the IUCN, if you'd like to know more. I linked it, right above you. In my original statement, what I said was "effectively extinct in the wild, in the USA." Those were not random words chosen by accident. Wood Bison have 0 viable populations in the wild, in the USA. Plains bison has 3 that are not connected.

>There are approximately 19,000 total plains bison in 54 conservation herds (herds managed in the public interest by governments and environmental organizations), and 11,000 total wood bison in 11 conservation herds. The proportion of mature individuals is difficult to calculate as even wild herd are often intentionally managed with skewed sex ratios. An optimistic estimate of the total number mature individuals for both subspecies (breeding adults including subadult males) is 23,000 (75% of total), while a more realistic estimate (breeding females and mature males only) is 21,000 (70% of total). Populations are considered viable in the long term if they exceed 1000 individuals. There are 5 plains bison conservation herds and 3 wood bison conservation herds each exceeding 1000 - therefore the total number of viable populations is only 8.

>Six wild (free-ranging, not confined primarily by fencing) herds of plains bison occur in the natural range of this subspecies: two in Canada, three in the United States and one in Mexico. There are ten wild populations of wood bison within the natural range of the sub-species; all are in Canada. Wood bison are extirpated in the wild in Alaska, a natural range state. There are approximately 500,000 bison in captive commercial populations (mostly plains bison) on about 4000 privately owned ranches.

>Nice way to truncate the quote and pretend it said something else.

but i didn't.

>Effectively extinct IN THE WILD, is not the same as effectively extinct.

even if that is an 11k population, how is that effectively extinct?

so anyway, they've gone from effectively extinct in the wild to nearly vulnerable and not currently in decline in the wild in the space of your paragraph and the article you quoted there. way to truncate the quote and pretend it said something else.

also from the report you quoted:
>we have calculated the total population of bison in conservation herds to be approximately 30,000 individuals and the mature population to be approximately 20,000 individuals. Of the total number presented only 15,000 total individuals are considered wild bison in the natural range within North America (free-ranging, not confined primarily by fencing). Of the wild populations, only 11,250 (75% see above) are mature individuals using the most conservative estimate.

the 11k is mature animals only.

>Conservation dependent. They can't survive without active conservation efforts. The wild populations are not viable.

so what are these conservation efforts? they're born from geographic confinement and nothing else. and from that report, a herd is viable at 1000 individuals, which means 8 herds, or a nearly 80% the wild mature population is viable.

which is probably why your report says 'nearly vulnerable', not effectively extinct, and 'not currently in decline'.
