We are at a standard of living where we can have healthcare and schooling as a right. Both can be completely funded by cutting back our military spending. I am an ex Marine, too. We could do both of those things with military funding alone. There is no debate that our military would be hurt from cutting funding, it won't. At all. America could turn into a war economy overnight if we needed to. We have a silly amount of allies for being the #1 global power, too. Regardless, our military is still substantially better regardless of a few minor(for the military) spending cuts.
Tl;dr
We can cut military spending in a very minor way and fully pay for free healthcare AND 4 extra years of advanced schooling. We can also cut taxes in other areas to provide our people with lots of spending money.

Hey OP, I'm actually in a similar boat as you, in fact I had a discussion with a friend about this recently. All men want freedom, but you need to have action and shedding of blood to achieve this, to maintain a level of efficiency.
I recommend looking up ideas that fuse Hans Hermann Hoppe and Murray Rothbard to have a free libertarian-capitalist society, but maintain an element of coercion that would lead to more freedom in the long run i.e strong borders to keep out undesirables, physical removal of communists, large and empowered police forces, etc.
As far as healthcare goes though, centralized healthcare is far to costly and ineffective, it just doesn't cover costs well. It might shape up a little bit in Urban areas despite looking like the VA with long waiting lines and such (fellow veteran here), but in rural areas and outside it would be a disaster like Cuba, poor funding and care.
Public schooling is equally shitty, I don't want to pay the tuition cost for these kids who will go on to get drunk, have parties, go to SJW rallies, watch their team sports, and get shitty degrees in gender studies or black history. It's just not practical. Then there are other implications, like flooding the market in degrees and devaluing them, etc.
