The EU was always doomed to fail. National unions between culturally similar countries would have been a superior solution.
A Franco-Germanic union was never a bad idea, and over time could have grown to include Austria and Switzerland. Likewise, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden could have formed a similar Scandinavian compact, just like Poland could have formed a nouveau Intermarium.

In particular the book I read was the Southern Victory series by Harry Turtledove, wherein the Confederates win the Civil War with British and French colloboration. The end result of this is actually an America that is genuinely imperial, jingoistic, and like 95% white.
