I don't know that it's really the government's job to fight it. But it does seem useful to teach some basics of nutrition and such. I mean, you learn about the carbon cycle and metabolism and stuff in biology.
Thing is governments typically want to push whatever centrally planned nonsense is good for the centrally planned economy.
At the end of the day you can't fight human behavior. It's a failed war on drugs like any other.

Some industries struggle long and hard to gain total control of their revenue. ISP's in america lock out the competition, they bribe officials, pass laws that disallow others to start up stuff there. And then as an added bonus, they overcharge you tenfold, they try to get away with unjustified cash demands for small print letters.

The same thing goes for the food industry, though it is not recognized, but the food industry is even more efficient in this, just look at the fat statistics, near 70% of all people are obese or overweight, that means that its working pretty well.
Food is such a resource that proliferating there is extremely efficient with our sciences. They can make flavor enhancers, they can make it smell better than normal food by adding the chemicals that trigger our smell sense. They add sugar to destroy our senses even more. So that an average human loses its sense of fullness completely.
When you lock down reality like that, and also fight legislation that targets your variables that you control, you are pretty much a fucking scumbag and your industry is completely corrupt.
There is no personal responsibility here, its fucking bullshit. There needs to be regulation around this. Most of the food industry deserves near death sentences for what they did to humanity.
There are currently widely used additives and ingredients in our foods which are banned in every other developed country. For regulatory agencies to stop pandering to corporations and actually do their jobs would do more for the public health than anything else.

I would like to add to this the idea of "just do your own research" would negate the very need anything other than forcing sellers to disclose their ingredients. However, this has not been effective towards the public health and so to achieve a fully healthy society, the attitude that everyone should watch their own diet, and that companies should be able to market anything short of fast-acting poison, must b e done away with.

Most of the people who are not minorities or very poor have woken up since the 1990's to the additives and poisons in our foods, as we've seen with the growth of organic, non-GM and preservative-free options, mostly consumed by the comparatively healthy middle and upper-middle classes.
We should still resent, however, that there are these options, and that we have need of them despite having a laundry list of so-called "regulators". The ultimate goal should be the removal of corporate influence from government but this is currently impossible when most of the regulatory agencies are comprised of former members of the corporations they're supposedly policing.

Obviously, the responsible thing to do would be to eat one section of foods at a time as snacks, over the course of a day, but we would just starve ourselves at work all day and shovel the entire thing into our faces in the car, after hurriedly picking it up on the way home.
