The theory behind that is the lighter the recoil, the less you will flinch and you will be able to focus on form more than compensation for kick.
.223 will kill the enemy dead. In my personal opinion, anything larger than that should be used in a quality bolt action rifle for precision shooting.
The idea behind the assault rifle is to dump large volumes of accurate fire into the enemy... So large magazine capacity and light recoil are preferred.
Typically, assault rifle engagement ranges max out at 300m, with 80 to 100m being average. Buy a carbine in .223.

My other points stand, though. Big far reaching bullets for precision shooting. Little, fast shooting, straight trajectory bullets for general combat stuff.
I don't care if you get an AR or not, but for the role, there are many sufficient calibers that will do the job for cheaper... And with the volume of ammunition use in most sport rifle drills and competitions, .308 will offer little benefit.
The advantages in a real shootout are limited because at typical engagement ranges, you won't notice a difference in any significant way in terms of ballistics and stopping power as a concept is debatable.
If you are wanting big bullets, get something chambered in 7.62x39mm. But, in my opinion, .223 is superior. I can't speak for 5.45 because I can't find anything here chambered for it.
There's an old adage, he who throws the most lead wins. There's more to it than that... But if he can find a gun that you can shoot comfortably for hours at a time and wouldn't hate carrying it on long hikes, that's your gun.

PTR-91 is not a good rifle because it does have a lot of recoil.. However you can put a heavy buffer on it and a muzzle brake and it will reduce recoil a lot.
Yhe Olde 7.62NATO is not that expensive. The PTR's dont give a shit about shooting crap Russian steel case ammo, just gotta give the chambers a good cleaning afterwards. PTR already knows about and addressed the coating on the steel case issues and its not a problem anymore.
A step up from that is ZQI, which is a bit more pricey but still reasonable. Depends on your budget ultimately and how much you ideally want to shoot.
