Why is this a thread? This happens every single year, especially when the first big storm system begins to fire up, but for people who live in these states, it's every.fucking.spring and summer with the potential for devastating tornadoes, large hail, and wind with flying debris, as well deadly cloud to ground lightning.

As someone who's lived in one of the currently red highlighted states all of my life... this seriously isn't even news.

>>
>>72130862
Tornado sirens going off means a tornado warning has been issued, meaning one has been spotted or one's about to hit the ground. The average warning time is about 15-20 minutes to take cover.
>>
>>72130599
yeah im in prattville, starting to panic a bit.
>>
>>72130862
It means it's time to come to terms with the life you led and say goodbye to those you've loved. Tornado sirens only go off when winds circulate at a high enough speed to set them off. The sound you hear is the wind blowing through a special mechanism that makes the sound.

So if you hear one, you can assume that a tornado is <5 minutes away and that all hope is lost.

I'm a certified tornado siren technician, and this is true.
The only reason they even install them is to make your death more frightening.
>>
>>72130862
Tornado on the ground or extremely low rapidly rotating wall cloud that could drop a funnel at any time.

A tornado warning means a tornado is imminent or already occurring. That's when the sirens go off and your cell phone starts beeping.

A tornado watch means almost nothing to the people here.
Just means conditions are favorable for the development. No sirens or cell tower pushes for a watch, only a warning.

As far as how much time you have, if you are on the east side of the city you have 15 minutes or so. If you are on the west side of the city, you are most likely already in the shit by the time they start going off.

The only idiots getting killed are those that ignore the tornado sirens... or suffer the unfortunate fate of a tornado literally going right over their house, ergo a basement for shelter not really mattering. That or a large vehicle smashing into a tornado shelter... or a gas line getting fucked up and fires getting created, thus getting burned alive from within your shelter.

Most of those unlikely to happen.

>>72131681

I'll say now that this isn't exactly inaccurate.

Every time they do this TORNADOS IMMINENT shit I go to the shelters on campus and everyone acts like idiots. Yeah bro I once survived a fuckin massive 'nado. They called it the Hurricane Hiroshima (Canadians don't have much experience with tornadoes or hurricanes so proper nomenclature is neglected.) It ripped through the neighbourhood, throwing cars and shit all over the place. I watched as my 178 year old maple tree was uprooted, turned over 18 times, and then slammed right through the gas tank of my neighbour's Civic. The gas ignited and instantly the flames were whipped up by the tornado. It was at that point I realized we were dealing with much more than your average tornado, we were dealing with a fire-twister, nature's most deadly of weather forces.

Half the neighbourhood was engulfed in flames as I watched in horror from my window. Distracted, I didn't even notice the 4 small children the firenado had picked up until their charred corpses embedded themselves in the brick wall of my home. It was at that point I realized we were dealing with much more than your average fire-tornado, we were dealing with an act of God, heaven's most deadly of supernatural forces.

Wellsir, as you know, when confronted with the power of God you have no choice but to submit your moral being to his heavenly wisdom, so I immediately ran out into the hellscape of fire and destruction, dropped to my knees and prayed. Within seconds a cinderblock slammed into my head with enough force to render me literally speechless, having driven skull fragments into my frontal cortex. It was at that point I realized we were dealing with much more than your average act of God and that Satan's evil works were at foot.

So, cradling the fragments of skull that I snatched from the tornado's wicked grasp I reapplied them to my head with a quick putty of mud and rain and set off for the hills. It was there that I found refuge, for, as you all know, tornadoes fear heights beyond 15 feet above sea-level.

So run, my friends. Run for the hills while you can. There you will know God's mercy.

Yeaaah, I feel you on everyone blowing it out of proportion and acting like idiots. That's why you just keep an eye on the weather if it's bad enough in your area. I certainly didn't seek shelter every single time, because I got tired of people screaming, parking like faggots, and bringing their barking dogs into the shelter. That's when I lived in a community that had its own shelter, though. Now I live in a home with a basement so not even a hassle to just go down there if I need to.

>>
>>72130159
>cool winds
Uh oh.
>>
>>72134478
It's because it's where all three major air mass fronts meet.

moist air from the gulf, dry air from the desert, and the jet stream from the north.

there's lots of cold dry air meeting warm moist air = explosive convection
and there's 3 different fronts moving in 3 different directions causing wind shear at different altitudes which causes rotation.

On another note, I wonder how the American Indians handled tornadoes way back in the day.
