The thing is that Trump seems more moderate than Cruz to Kasich supporters, while he also seems more conservative than Kasich to Cruz supporters. Despite political rhetoric, Trump actually stands as a pretty solid middle ground between the two candidates. It's the same reason why so many of Rubio's, Carson's, etc. former supporters went more to Trump.

Basically each state has a number of delegates, these delegates can literally be anybody, the party just has to allow you to hold the position.
People vote or caucus for a candidate in a state but the delegate rules vary by state so it gets confusing.
Basically, the number of delegates a candidate gets is based on how many people voted for him, but you can also negotiate for delegates.
The party decides the amount of delegates you need to guarantee the nomination otherwise you go into a contested convention.
Contested conventions upon themselves are confusing as fuck and go in rounds.
