So, states essentially have a large degree of self governance compared to most countries' districts within Europe. Besides that, there is also the fact that states can defacto negate laws by simply not enforcing them; e.g., legalized marijuana; it's still illegal federally.
States in the center of the country tend to be rather fuck off, white, and fiscally conservative. All things considered, you might be better off buying cheap land in Utah, than living in Greenland which is really just shitty Denmark.
