From what I've heard from him discussion determinism many times, he does understand it but deals with it in a way that is sort of brash and ugly. I think this is because determinism completely clashes with what his entire philosophy is based on; free will.

Haven't followed him closely, but watched a number of his videos over the years, and thought he was solid.
I wouldn't call him a "philosopher" and certainly not the "greatest thinker of our era". I'm sure he would laugh at those labels too.
My impression is that he's a reasonable, intelligent man. I don't think any of his views are groundbreaking; he is special because in an era where PC forces successfully destroy careers of those who challenge the latest sensitivity rules or big lies being told, he speaks critically and without apology in public.
I don't do as much research as he does, but I read broadly and enjoy politely challenging my liberal friends reg. all the crap they put up on FB without any real thought. They don't appreciate it. If you don't toe the PC line and want to speak your mind you just have to accept that half of Americans will consider you an ignorant, evil enemy. What challenge do you think determinism poses to his philosophy? We probably don't have ultimate free will... but who cares? We can imagine a different future and take steps to avoid that future.
Now maybe we're just acting on commands from our brains, our genes etc, but does it not SEEM like free will when we can choose a different option to the other options we can imagine? I can imagine driving my car off the cliff but I feel like I choose not to do that.
That ultimately I am a slave to my genes/history etc seems like a somewhat irrelevant point to make. We don't exist in that sort of world where we ever even think like that.
Furthermore, for what it's worth, free will has as much trouble in an indeterminate reality as it does a determinate one.
