Not disagreeing with you on that part. Pearl Harbor was pre-emptive. They knew a small invasion of the Philippines or Indochina would be enough to eventually trigger major war with the US, so if war was inevitable, might as well get a good shot in first.
As for Japan wanting to rule the Pacific, how is that less justified than Euro powers ruling Africa or East Asia itself? By the time the Great Depression hit Japan couldn't possibly maintain its standard of living without extracting resources from outside it's island. Regardless of whether it's right or wrong, they were put into a position where war became their natural inclination. Again, not that America was necessarily the baddie, but the idea that they were just peacefully chilling in Hawaii and completely out of nowhere Japan got Imperialist is false.
