It is literally true though bruhh. It is often forgotten by those in the media and sperglords like you alike.

There are three necessary conditions to show a causal relationship:

3) ruling out alternative explanations

Well we have two issues here. The first is claiming that variables are correlated when they're not. Various statistical fallacies mean we can claim things are correlated when in fact they are uncorrelated. The book/blog 'Spurious Correlations' humorously studies this type of fallacy.

In statistics, we can only test for correlation, not causation. You might think that "well, if we have two time series and the trend in series A begins before it does in series B we clearly have an implication", but this is a fallacy. They could both be dependent on a third variable for example.

To test for causation, we need empirical studies where we can control the variables. Or we can just assume that correlation implies causation, which is usually the approach taken in social sciences.

That's the point, though; if it's double blinded and randomized, you've ruled out confounding effects.

A strong effect in a double-blinded, randomized trial is hard proof of causation.

Same for a correlation if you control absolutely all exogenous variables, but that's hard outside of a lab.

In the memeoshpere, correlation precedes causation.
>>
>>72062263
I know right? Correlation MUST equal causation. Always. Forever. The world is a 2 variable system.

Fucking moron. Here, see for yourself how dumb you are: http://tylervigen.com/discover

That website allows you to correlate all sorts of things together. Like, did you know that the marriage rate in Kentucky correlates 96% with the US per capita consumption of whole milk? Crazy huh? Or how about this one; Death rates of people by falling down stairs correlates 99% with people's visiting rates of Disney World's Animal Kingdom. You know, death by falling down stairs is terrible, so we really should work to reduce the visits to the Animal Kingdom. The US government really ought to ban it.

Fucking moron. Correlation can be the beginnings of an argument for a causative link, but it CANNOT be the only argument, because as I have demonstrated, a lot of unrelated shit correlates. A causative link must be proven with evidence and reasoning, not just a fucking line graph.
>>
>>72062263
