Also a former libertarian. I live in a state where 75% of the jobs are a result of protectionism. Mostly the 25% import tariff on "trucks." The simple fact is we can't all be doctors, lawyers, engineers and programmers. The bottom 85% of the IQ curve need jobs too, and there is no way they can compete with Bangladeshis who will work for $1 a day. Protectionism is the only answer. Local gain for global loss is not so bad. Fuck the rest of the world. I am tired of subsidizing their drugs, energy, food etc. Level the playing field and keep enough industry in the country to maintain the ability to be self sufficient in wartime.

The thing about free trade is it's never what we're sold. If I buy an item at the store, I expect the thing printed on the box. When we "buy" free trade we're told it's good for everyone yet we end up with a "free trade agreement". If free trade is allowing competition without interference then we're not getting what we're sold. It can't be competitive if 1 side devalues their currency to make exports more competitive and imports less so. It can't be competitive if 1 side has citizens with rights and privileges and the other oppresses any kind of dissent. It can't be competitive if 1 country pushes industries to monopolize the other. It's all bullshit. It's dragging the prosperous side down to the poor one, while increasing the influence and power of the elites in the poor and prosperous countries.

let's get this straight. tariffs are a good thing for your economy but bad for other countries economies. the problem with tariffs is that they lead to tariffs in other countries. free trade is based on the fact that no tariffs are better then everyone having tariffs.
