Why is/was America so great? Was it really because of diversity? Then why are other diverse countries not great?

Mostly escaping WW1 and WW2 as well, which meant lot more of talented people leaving their countries than normally.
it was a mixture of luck and willing people.
when WW2 ended most western and Asian nations were ripped to shits, America was the only whole nation helping everybody else recover which in exchanged created jobs and a reputation for American made products that stayed until the 80's when Japan entered the world market competing directly with American made products.
trump recalls the 60' and 70's and believes America can manufacture and compete on a world stage like China.
pro tip: even Germany could compete harder than America when it comes to mass manufacturing there is way too much baggage and politics when it comes to producing in America.

In its heyday America's 'diversity' mostly applied to the diverse influx of immigrants from (mostly) european countries, in a time where european countries were mostly white people. Even the 'problematic' immigrants (chinks, jews, the irish, etc.) still /wanted/ the American dream and within a generation or two would adapt to the culture. In the beginning even blacks weren't a problem. They were either slaves or a Freeman, and Freeman were usually more well behaved than the whites since uppity negroes would more often than not either be intimidated to behave, or outright killed. It's worth pointing out that the idea of welfare didn't go much further than orphanages and soup kitchens (if you were fortunate).

Because they were the only great power that went with totally undamaged economy from ww2. Everyone was buying their goods from then on, plus they had most of the gold with wich european powers were paying for american goods during ww2. That giant lucky set of circumstamces was the base of todays USA economic power, not some meme of a nation of born enterpreneurs.
Because they've always had much land and many resources. And, more importantly, they have that frontier/pioneer mentality that helps them to use those resources in the best way. Russia could've been as great as the USA if they weren't uncivilised mongols.
