China has this weird thing about death.
Warcraft is huge in China and the game was changed so the zombies were golems and the playable zombie race had all their bones hidden. The word "Death" was also removed from different NPCs that had it for names.

I don't really know what that's about, but then again I don't understand Chinese logic.

you cannot show ghosts and skeletons in china due to a multitude of cultural and political reasons

the official reason is they dont want to promote superstition and/or non part thinking, current gov is supposed to be athiest, but chinese traditional culture/ religion is of chock full of ghosts and the afterlife stuff, its really big in the cultural subconscious

but t b h imo its just a old excuse from the communist past for them to reject this SJW feminism nonsense film with no actual value. Theres only a certain number of foreign flims that can air in china every year (i think like 30 ish?)

>pic is some of the taoist deities of the underworld you can find in taiwan or overseas chinese temples
>>
>>81303348
Chinese are generally incredibly superstitious when it comes to death.
Generally, American Horror Movies have a relatively hard time gaining traction in China, and that's even IF they've been allowed to be aired over there.

This, Zootopia made over 19,000,000 on its opening day, and went on to have an opening weekend that made over 75M, as a family/children's movie IN FUCKING MARCH. The fact that another family movie can't even match that in mid summer is telling, especially when its only other competition is a fucking kid's movie with Louis "Cuck" C.K as the lead role.

more pics of chinese pagan folk worship

its a weird, fascinating mishmash of occultism, folklore, legends, taoism and buddhism. This is handed down from generations. You can even find hindu deities in some chinese temples, there are so many different deities and they all have a origin story and morals behind them. During the cultural revoultion they tried to dampen a lot of this, but you cant really erase thousands of years just like that. My grandma absolutely believes in these stuff (great grandparents escaped civil war in china, went overseas here).

I'm kinda lukewarm, I go to the temples and burn offerings too, but I see it as more of a cultural heritage thingy. There are lots of spooky stories though.

Would not count on negative reviews either because its progressive only on that premise will people pretend they like it, just waiting for the first reviews to praise the decision to cast those 4 "insert 2-4 praising adjectives here" women and revive the Ghostbuster series.

But seriously did they just cast the 4 ugliest women in hollywood for that movie and thought it would make a good movie? The fat one alone is a sign that a movie a pure garbage, I would not know one movie with her in it that is good and if I missed one it's probably because I forget she was shown on screen.

>>81305336
The point I'm making is that Zootopia did all that within arguably one of the worst months for family films, due to there being NO major holidays for almost a month after release. Zootopia took a while to get to its full popularity, its opening weekend was considered very average, because it was only predicted to make 500M tops. It climbed to the top simply because it was a good movie in the end (and furfags). The new Ghostbusters has to deal with the fact that it's a garbage movie, and will likely not bring in any second-time viewers, so popularity will decline in a fucking hurry. Also, no China, so that's a potential 200,000,000 gone right there.

Furious Seven was actually a pretty good movie in its niche and everyone figured it'd be the last since Paul Walker died and he was like co-protagonist with Vin Diesel through most of the series.

>>

>why was it banned in china?
Actually, the official explanation from the official is that the previous 2 films were not famous in China, so they don't expect this film to make money. And since Chinese companies take 70% share of foreign films aired in China, and there is a yearly quota, China has incentive to block films that might financially fail.

I'd say the biggest problem with a car focused movie is deciding how focused you want to be. There's a huge sliding scale of car enthusiasts as well as a broad variety of their specific field of interest so it's quite hard to hit a large portion of the demographic with any one attempt.

I think these people are shooting themselves in the foot. Most people who saw the movie disliked it because it was bad, according to them; when they see the only defense for it being "You must be a sexist," it doesn't give credit to them. It just sounds lame and retarded and ensures that another attempt at a movie like this will bomb even harder.

At the end of the day, if it doesn't make money, it doesn't make sense.

Something about using photos slathered in watermarks tickles my funny bone. I mean, someone went to the trouble of creating a system that frames and watermarks every photo on a database, hoping it would make the photo unusable enough that you'd pay for a clean version, but you just don't give a fuck.

China doesn't want people using their imaginations about ghosts and time travel. They want their citizens to be cookie cutter replicas that work in a factory 60 hours a week until they die. Creativity is forbidden unless it's used as propaganda.

I think you have a point medkit, it is as if they are trying to demonise what would be the tradional consuming demographic these 'nerd culture' films stemmed from and catered to. When they realise its not as lucrative to be as 'progressive' as they thought, we may see the pendulum swing the other way and a certain amount of pandering may occur.

It is known that to get your film into China, you need to get the government on your side from the onset. Sony make the mistake in thinking getting approval for screening in China was easy. Disney and MCU work their ass off to negotiate for screening rights before the film was even complete.

There are multiple times when it is reported.
Ironman 3: Marvel bypassed the yearly quota entirely by inserting an extended scene of Stark getting his heart surgery in China, filmed in China, with a Chinese actress as surgeon. That extended scene granted Marvel the benefit of being treated like a Chinese film. This means they also was allowed more than the 30% profits that was the max in the quota system.

With Star Wars, there was a massive campaign that involved Storm Troopers showing up in large numbers in public places. The film itself wasn't that successful in China, but what matters was that Disney got their approval early.

The 30 film quota is extremely restrictive. But as the Chinese official say, the main issue is that the government think it would be a waste of money for the local cinemas.

it's not "banned" in china, it's just not going to be imported for screening because it sucks. It will likely be okay to import when it gets on DVD, given that the earlier ghostbusters movies were fine and the new one actually has a sanitized title

http://consequenceofsound.net/2016/07/ghostbusters-denied-release-in-china/

>Sony tried to avoid a similar fate for Ghostbusters by actually excluding the Chinese symbol for “ghost” from the film’s title. The 1984 original (which also never saw a movie theater in China, either), was titled 捉鬼敢死队, literally translating to “Ghost Catcher Dare Die Team.” However, the new version switched the first few characters, now reading 超能敢死队, or “Super Power Dare Die Team.”

>Still, THR’s source said none of this really mattered. “It’s been confirmed that Ghostbusters won’t be coming to China,” a Chinese executive told the magazine, “because they think it’s not really that attractive to Chinese audiences. Most of the Chinese audience didn’t see the first and second movies, so they don’t think there’s much market for it here.”

Nah it would make 45million this weekend. You got to separate opening weekend numbers with final total numbers.

How much would it make in total? While, similar films that made 40-50million in opening weekend can make more than 150million in total if they are lucky. So right now that is the expected final total the film will get. That would not be enough to cover costs, but at least we have a baseline for what we are expecting.
>>
Keep in mind that they did 3 million on Thursday 7PM-12AM showings, so Friday by itself was actually 14 million. I'm pissed that this is going to outdo Warcraft in the US, but amused that Deadpool still wrecks it with a 132 million opening weekend in February.

They weigh top critics differently
>>
>>81319458
No. the 6.5 comes from the average rating. The 75% is the percentage of critics who said the film was "good".
>>
>>81306548
>That's just fucking retarded
Many critics don't give numeral scores. So the only way they can really count everyone's opinion is asking them to give a yes or no answer for the film. That's the only way the numbers can work.
>>
>>81305874
2 diffrent ratings
The percentage is the % of critics which rate it higher than 50/100
The rating is the average rating

So, if Movie A gets five 10/10 and five 4/10, it's tomatometer will be 50%, and the rating will be 7/10

The opening scene of The Dark Knight Returns, sometimes known as "Bane on Plane," is generally considered to be a variant of surrealism or Dadaism, usually with existential or postmodern undertones related to collapse of meaning and the visceral absurdity of confusion in a symbolic order. On this reading, the scene is designed to evoke a kind of uncanny valley effect in the viewer by presenting him with what is ostensibly an incredibly conventional narrative and semiotic holism - an American action caper, constructed so prototypically from cliches and familiar devices that even the exciting "reveal" of Bane's identity has its anagnorisis and payoff botched well before its presentation as dramatic climax - but subtly and systemically undermining the possibility of semiotic stability throughout the scene, and thereby sabotaging the possibility of the viewer's fusion with the film's semiotic horizon. The experience of watching Bane on Plane is one of profound unease and even dissociation, as the viewer continually tries to assemble coherent meanings, motives, and purposes from a train of malformed tropes, allegories, and metaphors; narratological intuition continually fails to discover any implicit humanity in the behaviour of the actors. The mind reflexively brackets the scene as likely to admit of little variation in its seemingly familiar, even monolithic tropes, but is continually surprised to find that near every trope is "misbehaving." Where at first a single puzzle piece does not "fit" with its puzzle, it is quickly realised that none of the pieces fit; and that this, perhaps, is not a puzzle at all. When asked whether the work of Foucault and Deleuze on the epistemic experience of schizophrenia influenced his choices in his role as Bane, Tom Hardy declined to comment, but referenced Foucault on the discursive constitution of the author-function.
