I think the specialization of research mainly, I went into it thinking I wanted to get into academia but I didn't have an appreciation of how focused the research can be. People devoting their entire careers to understanding the effects of groups of receptors or pathways or that sort of thing. It's admirable but it's not for me. I didn't do enough research about it beforehand. I still love the subject, but I didn't want to teach or get into the medical field, so I switched. I'm happy with economics now though, I've always loved the subject (along with history and politics) so it felt like a natural fit.

I ended up getting a job in a large municipality handling government ethics and diversity issues even just lurk pol like twice a week and want to call bullshit on everything. And yeah, 20k in debt is nothing to sneeze at, but with your degree you'll have plenty of options out there for you. Just look at the top 100 beers on BeerAdvocate. Almost every single one is a Russian Imperial Stout or a Double/Imperial IPA. I mean at this point I get the whole IPA thing, I went to San Diego and I get how amazing and delicious American hops can make a beer, but not everything has to be insanely dark, dank and full of alcohol to be good.
I'll warn you about dat Busch though; it has some toasted malt flavor but sometimes a little bit of roasted corn to it as well. I honestly don't mind since I like corn (I drink Miller High Life and regular Busch when I'm not drinking American IPAs and shit), but some people say it kind of has a roasted vegetable kind of taste. A slightly higher end version is Michelob Amber Bock. Higher than that might be Shiner Bock or Abita Amber. Higher than that and you're back in craft territory. It's all about the price and value really; and you seriously can't beat the Copper Lager there. You can get a six pack of 16oz cans for cheaper than a six pack of any 12oz craft beer.

I guess the best model of my ideal society would be what Varg proposes, a traditionalist, simple, rural way of life, in small communities.
Maybe some of you will agree, but don't you feel like the value of our lives have been stripped from us by technology? Particularly consumer tech.
For example, would you rather have 100 photographs on your phone, or two or three photo's of loved ones or special scenes? Would you rather buy a plastic wrapped, factory made loaf of bread, or one baked by the local baker not a few minutes ago? Would you rather have instant communication with a lot of people, or have a well meant, thoughtful letter sent to you by your friend in the next town over?
My point, i guess, is that we've become so used to having technology and consumerism do everything for us. I believe we'd all be more satisfied, humble and respectful human beings if the things we did had more of a connection to our environment, our community, and the role each of us would have played in it.
Think about all the people that go unappreciated in our societies these days, because they fade into the obscure.
Bakers. They used to be the person who owned the place down by the corner, and would greet you by name every morning when you stopped by to pick up a loaf of bread, made of the wheat that you and your family harvested.
Do you know who baked your bread this morning? A fucking machine did. And where did the wheat come from? Who knows?
