You can make an official request for something to be declassified and made public. FOIA requests are usually granted if it's deemed that something does not or no longer presets a national security risk.
There was an engineer a few years ago who made a FOIA request for all the data NIST used to model the collapse of the towers. They gave him access to two hard drives with tens of thousands of files, I think it was like 2 gig in all. The only stuff that was withheld were some proprietary break element codes.
