I know that war and conflict is a part of human nature but there are specific reasons as to why governments choose to go to war. Thucydides provides a prime historical account of why people choose to go to war, fear of the growing power of another nation and past grievances inflicted upon them. Similar things can be said of Russia and the West but there are specific reasons as to why and what they hope to achieve.
People build weapons not only to use them but also for the threat of using them. The build up of arms is not necessarily a literal conflict but it is another mode of war it is to check your opponents logistical and material capacity to respond your moves. The simulation of nuking Russia would be an example where Sweden was caught with its pants down. Compare that to the Rand corp. telling the US that Russia could overrun the three Baltic states of the EU in 60 hours resulted in an increase in military expenditure and enforcement which was responded in kind by the Russians. Point being they are made to exercise power as much as they are to test the capacity of the opponent to use them. If for example there was no response by the US, Russia would probably think its current position is dominant for the time being.

It doesn't have to be over the Baltic states, they were mainly used as a point of reference to the military build up and tensions between the EU/NATO and Russia. It very well could lead to war, it is not about going to war over Latvia it is about maintaining the integrity of your sphere of influence and if Russia is found out to be attacking a member of NATO it very well could lead to war very quickly. A coup is very often back by a stronger force that provides it is with supplies and diplomatic protection that would seek to legitimize their overthrowal of the government. So while plausible deniability is a possibility I doubt NATO would take it lightly and would suspect Russian involvement.

So for sake of comparison you have likened them to the same situation of Germany coming out of the first world war, lost territory, feel wronged in their defeat and are rearming and reasserting themselves. This similarity is something that has been noted by NATO and by the Estonian Military. Presumably, Russia has a grievance towards NATO as they would see the Baltic states as belonging to Russia's authority and not to EU/NATO.
So Russia has a past grievance that it wishes to settle with its rival that is NATO. But what is its fear? I myself would find this within the grievance; that the loss of the cold war broke up the USSR, losing territory and economically weakening Russia. Whether or not NATO are to blame is beside the point here, I think from the Russian standpoint they fear a furthering fracturing of Russia through international pressure through NATO.
Another point is whether this will turn into a war or whether Russia will go quietly. I think this is a possibility as I think that the unity of Russia is tied up in the leadership and authority of Putin who has the media, the economy, the public and (presumably) the military under his thumb. If Putin goes it is likely that Russia would collapse internally again. But I am uncertain on that point. I doubt NATO would move in on Russia, their goal seems to be keeping Russia contained while it breaks itself.
The last part referring to Jihadis is concerning. While I do not think Putin wants to see the world burn as his duty is to Russia, that does not make him averse to allying with those who do if they are useful to him. I think regardless of any outcome of a future conflict or if one even happens, Jihadis will remain a constant threat.

I think that if things go Putin's way Russia will not go to war directly. I presume he hopes for a breakdown of the EU and the weakening if not outright breakdown of NATO. There is an assumption that many of the right and far-right parties that are in EU member states are funded by Moscow. So in this hypothetical event of the diplomatic and military collapse in Europe, I think Russia would be more inclined towards the diplomatic extension of its political influence and power over Europe to achieve hegemony as opposed to invading these countries directly, preferring to help those parties get in power or just support a coup as he has done in the past.
I think with the building of ties in middle east is a way to counter American dominance in the region which is severely weakened. I am unsure about the future of Syria it is likely that if Russia succeeds in its goals of keeping Assad in that Russia will have a strong presence in the middle-east through Assad and Hezbollah. Further, I believe that soon, perhaps 15-25 years, Iran will be a Nuclear nation and this fact alone would at the very least balance the power between Russia and the US, if Israeli-US relations have not collapsed.

The William Perry video and what you have mentioned about ISIS is another concern. The video seems to be a potential way America can be brought down without any clear culprit (hence making a nuclear retaliation unfeasible) and brings America down as a super power. The ISIS video follows a similar strain but does not have to be targetted at America as I would presume Europe is a more realistic target for them.
Nonetheless, while there is no clear opponent who can be said to have caused the attack as they are operating covertly the power vacuum that is left by America would be immense which could trigger WW3 or set the world down the inevitable path to war.

That was mostly from the point of view if America complied with the demands, which I do not think it would as there is no guarantee that giving up its military global position is going to prevent 5 bombs going off that are already in the country. The situation is likened to the preventative strikes on the USSR before they had nukes, sure they could nuke the USSR but their armies would roll over Europe anyway in retaliation.
