Does anybody else feel like depression is a made up illness? Or at least much, much rarer than what doctors today are suggesting.

I think SSRIs are being pushed on people for no reason other than because the pharmaceutical companies want their profits.
I became very suspicious of depression meds after a doctor hinted that I should try SSRIs because of a prolonged FLU that might be partly caused by "psychological" issues. These people have no shame honestly.

Finland has a very low population, yet there are 250,000 people here that are taking SSRIs for prolonged periods of time.
And looking at the side effects of these meds, that among others include weight gain and limp dick, you'd think that they just make you feel worse.

Why do people today think that if you aren't absolutely happy all the time, you are "depressed"?
>>
>>80748982
Proper Depression is a muthfucker, it's a full-on headfuck.

But yeah, there's a lot of blues being misdiagnosed as full-on depression too, probably way more than the real thing.

A mass media telling us that we should feel happy all the time to seel us junk doesn't help; we're supposed to experience negative emotions occasionally to change our situation.
>>
>>80748982
Made up? No. I've been through it, and trust me, it's not the same as just being sad. Sometimes there'd be no reason for it. I had a wonderful day, my family loved me, my friends cared about me, and I had a job that paid well enough for the simplistic lifestyle I would want to live, but I would just lose all the motivation I should have had in an instant.

Is it totally over-diagnosed on people who actually do need to just get the fuck over themselves? Yes, but it's difficult for outside eyes to tell the difference between the two scenarios.
>>
it's the result of Internet and technology addiction (among any number of other addictions including sex, porn drugs etc)

its a symptom not a disease
>>
>>80749650
you probably still fapped to porn and spent hours online on those days.

it all comes down to media influence.

spend less time on /pol/ and 4chan and you will be less "depressed"
>>
>>80748982
I think the majority of """""""depressed"""""" people are just fatasses who don't even lift. I used to feel pretty sad but now that i'm fit it's nowhere near as bad.
I also think you've got a point about the media pushing the "you deserve to be ecstatic ALL THE TIME" bullshit on us to sell us shit.
>>
>>80749806
I'd love to see some proof for this.

there's tons of studies for porn out there.

but really I think it extends much further than porn, to the whole Internet and screens in general.

when I spend a long time outside/with family and no access to 4chan and internet I automatically feel less "depressed" once I get over the withdrawal.
>>
>>80750051
I don't think nofap/noporn is a cure-all for every mental problem but it does help.

Really I think limiting or abstaining from technology is the big step, and returning to nature in multiple ways. I'm not claiming I've done it either.
>>
>>80749806
Jesus christ you neurotypical fuckheads are so ignorant about mental illness. This is on par with some confident extrovert saying "just b urself XD"

I have literal Asperger's.

I agree, quitting porn doesn't cure autism and magically make you "normal" but it's still a good thing to do.

>>
>>80750540
I do agree with this. People don't realize the power of language. They don't realize that the idea of "mental illness" creates mental illness
>>
>>80750168
I really think that's just a correlation. People who are already depressed spend more time alone and on the internet, not the other way around.

Addiction to media and the Internet can cause somebody to withdraw from society and become depressed, probably, but they're the symptoms.

As we speak I'm housesitting for my cousins while they're on vacation. I'be spent the passed 5 days alone in their house with their dogs and bearded dragon playing video games and browsing on my phone. I feel fine and have for the past year without any medication.

Sometimes there really is just a chemical imbalance, man.
>>
>>80749293
The increase in diagnosed cases actually works better for selling shit to people than keeping people happy.

Depression is, in my experience, a change in perspective that leaves the person with a much more realistic outlook on life. Depression is realism. It's that simple.
>>

Excuse my terrible spelling and grammar. I disabled autocorreCT on my shit phone not too long ago because it wouldnt let me swear but it never really disabled, just cleared its memory and now it's even more retarded.
>>
Depression is pushed to sell antidepressants and make billions of dollars. It should only really be treated with

1) talking to someone who can help you get through it.

2) supplementing vitamin d, b12, zinc.

3) positive lifestyle changes e.g. resistance training, jogging etc.

I would probably rather die than take antidepressants.
>>
>>80749293
this
media distorts reality saying you should be and can be a career guy, jacked, family man and with a smile all the time

but social media is more the culprit here, people constantly comparing their average/shit life to the highlights or lies of others, and feeling more and more lonely without a sense of belonging in the process (white males specially)
>>
>>80748982
No, it's real.
But psychiatrists are quick to prescribe meds to people who don't need it.
For example I've been prescribed anti-psychotics, refused to take them, they brought me to court and forced me to take them by injection. And I don't even have a mental illness. I was just a weed smoker.

It's only a dose of realism for people mentally strong enough to deal with it and accept it.

For others it's an excuse to develop an eternal victim complex or something that makes them 'unique'

>Why do people today think that if you aren't absolutely happy all the time, you are "depressed"?
Because people are stupid.

Some tips:
Become a Catholic (most important one!)
Get a handle on your thought life. Stop thinking about stupid shit and then you won't feel so bad about your life. Stop comparing yourself to Justin Bieber, stop listening to negative music, stop watching TV.
Read books. Good books, non-fictional *and* fictional.
Socialize (but if you're an introvert don't force yourself to be something you're not. Accept your introversion.)
Lift and exercise.
Eat healthily.

>SSRIs
Depression is very real. The effectiveness of SSRI's is somewhat debatable.

>Why do people today think that if you aren't absolutely happy all the time, you are "depressed"?
Depression is closer to never wanting to get out of bed and constantly thinking about suiciding for months. That's the deeper end of it at least.

I'm on Prozac right now.

No depression isn't a made up illness and these SSRIs aren't just pushed to make money. I legitimately believe taking this Prozac pill is helping me. I do have more energy to do things, and I don't feel physical pain all the time.

>Why do people today think that if you aren't absolutely happy all the time, you are "depressed"?

Depression isn't merely sadness. It causes physical pain and fatigue. Its feeling constantly tired from waking up to going to sleep. People don't want to be around you anymore because your depressed.

The goal of medications is not to be "happy pills" they aren't supposed to make you happy. they are supposed to give you more energy, get rid of anxiety, and make people want to be around you again.

I took sertraline literally once and had the worst Derealization of my life.

Then a while back I started taking Mirtazapine for insomnia/"depression"
worked really fucking well for my insomnia but as for depression it just kind of made me feel a bit drowsy all day, but it fucked with my sex drive and made my cum really viscous

If you are depressed, you are chosing to be depressed.

It's a mental state that you can control, all these ad's and doctors talking about it like an epidemic. Has created a nocebo effect that causes people who are depressed to give up hope on getting better. Worsening their condition, you literally just have to tell yourself "I am making this choice to be depressed and I don't wanna be anymore"
>>
I'm of two minds about it. Depression is a genuine thing, and there are people far more prone to it than others. But it is also highly situational, more than just being unhappy, or useless.

It's both part of overmedicalisation, state power grabs, the infantalisation and feminisation of society, but also something people really do need help with.
>>
>>80753569
pretty sure 4chan invented the whole nofap thing

like nofap november

Diagnosed with depression and anxiety here.

I thought it was a meme illness but it can fuck you up for good. I always thought I could take on anything. Nothing ever affected me too much.
Then one day I started having dizziness, breathing problems, eyesight blackouts out of pure stress, mental haze, heart racing, fucked up digestion and fatigue,

I spend a whole year going from doctor to doctor, paid and free, trying to find a cause for all this, and they eventually told me it was depression+anxiety together. I initially thought I was being memed. I still do desu.
I'm trying to accept this is a possibility, but I still find it hard to believe becauseI have no mental symptoms. All of them are physical.
>>
>>80753611
Telling youraelf that it is depression and you can choose to not be is one of the first steps of self therapy. Not everyone is strong willed enough for self therapy.
>>
>>80748982
Yes, depression is real, however it is not as wide spread as people make it out to be. A lot of people go to a doctor and say they're said and the doc gives them mess and tells them they have depression. It's a cop out really, gets you out of the office quick.
>>
>>80753611
Nah, it can really be anything, shit diet, shit life, shit state of mind, so many things can cause it.

I started exercising properly, getting enough sleep and having a decent diet with proper vitamins and I don't really feel like shit anymore.

Still have barely any motivation though

Many of you have a fap folder, but do any of you have a nofap folder?

In my folder I have conducted myself to better pursuits. Some of these include meditation, online books and a complete host to some of cutest cat pictures in the world. Maybe you all just need to do what I did
>>
>>80753874

Completely proves my point, you felt like shit because you weren't doing anything. So you decided to do something to make you feel better about it and you did.
>>
>>80753990
that "nofap folder" should be a physical folder, not a computer folder
>>
>>80753739
Redditors are the ones who turned it into a way of life
>>
>>80748982
Depression is not a made up illness; it's a reaction to depressing events.

The medicine that purports to help alleviate depression has zero research to back up their claims.

The addiction is real; the side-effects are real; the withdrawals are real; the "cure" is a lie.
>>
>>80753813
I don't think its hard at all, granted this is all from my bias. I had sever depression from 4th-9th grade (im not underage, don't ban me mods.) One day I woke up and decided I had enough of it, and worked to find joy in everything.

I told my Psychologist that I was required to see at the time about this. She was completely baffled, and when I told her I wanted to stop taking my meds for depression a month later. She tried to force a higher dosage on me. So i stopped going to see her and have been fine ever since, this was 7-9 years ago now.
>>
>>80749806
Ironic that when i started listening to alex jones i got less depressed. Notably because i found out why i was depressed and why shits messed up

/pol/ cures depression as well
>>
>>80754133
reddit nofap misses a lot of the points though.

It focuses too much on getting laid and worshiping women, which is the root of the problem in the first place.

You have to get used to the idea that you can be celibate and still a complete man.

Don't fall for the "muh birthrates" meme here, celibacy is respectable too
>>
>>80748982
>Why do people today think that if you aren't absolutely happy all the time, you are "depressed"?

Critical thinking leads to dissatisfaction which leads to "depression". Don't try to be normal or fit in. Warp the world into a manageable shape, like carrying a sheet of plywood on a windy day. Avoid happy pills. Maintain a realistic world view, which can be pretty grim. Find what joy you can.
>>
>>80754039
Well the thing is rarely will anyone know exactly what is causing them to be depressed, for me maybe it was my bad diet, maybe it was my lack of exercise, maybe just my frame of mind before I decided to start working to improve myself. These are the two most common causes but far from all.
>>
>>80751165
that doesn't even sound like depression to me. I'm bipolar and when after becoming manic I'm so depressed and suicidal but so apathetic I just lay in bed for days at a time.
>>
>>80751789
UNCOMMON BUT NOT RARE
>>
>>80753954
Worst part of it is that I consider myself a fairly happy person with a comfy life, so it's not like I know how to "snap out of it."
