From what I've heard the people counting the ballots had no clue about what was and wasn't an informal vote. For example, they were counting votes where less than 6 numbers were written above the line as informal, when in fact they are formal.

I was a polling assistant on Saturday, the AEC didn't really fuck up so much as it was just a failure of communication.
We were told to tell voters the spiel, "you have to number either 1 to 6 above the line or 1 to 12 below the line".
It wasn't until we started counting the senate ballots and asking about what was classified as informal or not that our second-in-command supervisor asked our supervisor and we were told that, actually, so long as there was a clear '1' preference then the paper was valid. We'd already sorted a bunch by this point so I can imagine at some polling places this wasn't made clear to the uni students and retirees counting the votes and some were incorrectly sorted as informal.
