They like immigration, that I get. But why do they chose muslims of all people?
Why don't they import tons of people from western european countries, or mediterraneans like everyone did through the first half of the XXth century, if they like poor people so much?

There are a few different reasons, some of them overlapping, some exclusive to certain individuals, and they all have to do with the liberal cult that has sprung up over the last 20 years or so.
Virtue signaling - Virtue signaling is all about looking good. If you are open-minded towards the most scary minority imaginable, it's a bigger sacrifice, and therefore a bigger virtue.
Hatred of conservatives - Conservatives hate muslims, and since conservatives are the benchmark for all that is loathsome, they can feel like they're that much further away from them by loving Muslims.
White guilt redux - I mean, these people were bombed by us for so long, it's our fault they're in such a poor condition, isn't it?
Hatred of the west - They may understand on some level that islam chips away at the very foundation of the west. The fact that this would also spell the end for their own ideology apparently never occurs to them.
Hatred of christianity - They think that christianity, despite not really being that big a cultural force anymore, is the worst thing imaginable. Since muslims work to destroy christianity, that just means they're good by default.

Lefties feel guilty for being successful. We're talking about the ivory tower types here, who went to ivy league schools and have the time and money to be very vocal.
Lefties are quite lazy though, and though they'd never admit it, they're also greedy. They do not want to actually solve any problems or spend too much of their own money doing it. This is why they want to raise taxes rather than personally get involved: taxes can fix problems (they believe) without them needing to personally do it.
So if you're a lazy, selfish, self-hating lefty, how do you live with yourself? You convince yourself that your life is actually terrible and your country is awful. Lefties are the flag burners and the ones saying how their country (usually America) was "never great".
If America isn't great, then, in their mind, things that are far removed from America ARE great, simply by virtue of not being identified with America.
Socialism? Great! Communism? Great! Muslims? Not associated with America and therefore great! Slavs? Swiss? Germans? Ehhh, little too close to America so not so great. (They don't especially like the Chinese either, because Chinese people tend to come to America and be successful which undermines the left-wing narrative, so they don't really like Asians, if you press them about it. Notice you'll rarely see Asians in the left-wing circles.)

Not really-- emotions animate every decision you make. Without emotions, you wouldn't have preferences, or the passion to make anything happen in your life. You wouldn't care about society in general, and it wouldn't bother you that your culture is being eradicated. If you were doing fine, the kind of person in a position to change things, you'd just think "fuck them, I've got mine."
The problem is that people have had their emotions programmed to respond to certain ideas in a prescribed way through indoctrination, and only dispassionate people are even able to see through it. Most emotional liberals don't even realize they're thinking emotionally-- as far as they can tell, they're just being reasonable. Their worldview won't suffer contradictory information.

Let me rephrase what I mean by that. Emotional thinking is great on an interpersonal level. But in a system of government they can't. Just like humanitarian aid is a great concept, but terrible in practice because it helps no one and we lose money. Welfare is great in concept, but in reality we as a country lose money, and the poor lose motivation to work. So yes emotions are super important in an interpersonal way like friendship, love, etc. But not in positions of power.
Lefties do whatever they can to increase their support
Families support conservatives. Liberals create incentives for broken families and normalize degenerate lifestyles
