Funding Islamic radicals or dictators was used to promote western foreign policy aims while avoiding direct western military involvement in a region.
It was also used to destroy whatever was left of the secular Arab nationalist movement after the Israeli 6 day war against Egypt.
Ironically the destruction of secular rule and promotion of Saudi Arabia as a great power was the biggest cause of the rise of radical Jihadism in the Middle East. Prior to that say in the 50s and early 60s the Middle East was becoming far more secular and "westernized"

The middle east was starting to emulate the west until said nationalist movements were crushed and the Saudi monarchy began funding and growing the Wahhabist/Jihadist movement around the 70s so it covered the entire middle east.

Even the moderate states in the middle east have huge majorities of muslims who preffer to live under sharia law.
The extent of their aggressiveness and imperialism is correlated with the power of their empires and states. We had a large part in designing how the middle east is set up and who runs the states in the modern era. It was done for a reason. Their ability to unite has been crippled and this has stamped out their ability to aggressively spread like what was seen in the past. Now they result to the modern day terror approach because it is all they are capable of right now.
