If history is any guide, there will be a massive migration to industries that don't yet exist, but it will be tumultuous and plenty of people will be hurt by the transition.
Over 50% of Americans used to be farmers in 1800, but the industrial revolution reduced the need for human labor, so the proportion of farmers dropped dramatically. All those displaced workers then entered the manufacturing sector rather than starving to death.
Basically the free market will find a use for all the unused human capital if there is enough time to adapt.
Who knows? Maybe a huge proportion of the trucking/shipping industry will be replaced by automated driving systems, but maybe Congress passed a law that all automated cars must have human oversight. Then a trucker becomes more like a manager - how do I pilot these 10 trucks most efficiently from the office?

By all means, if there is productive work needing done then it should be expected it is done by those on bennies. But not all work is productive and in the not too distant future, there will be very little work that can be done more productively than humans than robots.

I think it depends how far aoutmation goes. Currently mpeople with little to no formal qualification can still find work doing something that doesn't require much in the way of skills or training. But if these jobs are automated (think driver, check-out clerk, fast food) then you have a massive chunk of people unskilled and out of work. Sure it's impossible to call anything for sure. But with increasin population and fewer and fewer new jobs being created, I see a breaking point. I mean can you envision a new profession or opening in the market that will in the near future employ substantial numbers of people productively? The human skillset is losing market value and I think this will only get worse.
There will be a huge drive to reduce the birth rate, so we will end up with a population that is smaller than now and mainly people over 50 because human life spans are extending there is no need to keep reproducing if the older folk are not dying and in good health. You would only need a few thousand births a year to keep the population at a stable turnover rate.
