I believed that for most of my life, but at this point I don't think that's a theory which can withstand scrutiny. For the better part of the jews, in my community at least, individuality is something that one indulges in only when the jewish identity is taken proper care of. Many jews seem to be permanently stuck in defense mode by their nature and it keeps them perpetually pushing more and more subversive behavior as a kind of reflex.

Actually the latter was always a logical outcome of the former.
