You have weighted GPAs depending on the courses you took. Regular courses (easiest) 4.0 for an A, Honors Courses (Intermediate) 4.5 for an A, and AP Courses (Hardest) 5.0 for an A. That was how it went for the high schools in Orlando, Florida for the most part.
To expand on this, when you apply for college you have your weighted GPA, and unweighted GPA shown to better differentiate between canidates because someone can take easy courses and get all As and someone can take the hardest courses and get all As and the only difference will be shown in the weighted GPA.
It is pretty dumb though because a lot of schools have 10+ Valedictorians because they use unweighted GPAs to determine that. A public high school I was zoned for (I went to private catholic high school) had 30 Valedictorians the year I graduated.

There was a big thing a while ago where high schools were using this hilarious additive system instead of averaging gpa, where extra electives would just add extra to the gpa, and combined with the 5.0 honors 6.0 ap/de system there were kids just cramming online classes of basket weaving (honors) and walking out of their high schools with gpas of 10 or higher. Now all of our state colleges don't give a single shit about your high school gpa beyond your class rank, and just grade on their own system that only looks at how many core subjects you completed and what grades you got on them.

Last time one of my siblings got enrolled into kindergarten, all they asked for was a shot record, emergency contact information, and one piece of identifying information of our choice.
