People say that Europeans aren't as Christian now as they were in the past and that Europeans have lost their faith. Personally I don't believe it, the reason I think that is because in the past Europeans were never Christian. For example, an artist or writer during the middle ages had to express themselves as if they were a Christian. Otherwise they would be arrested and tortured. When you know this you have to understand, of course they pretended to be Christian because if they didn't they would be dead.
When Europeans went to church in the middle ages they did it because they had too. The reason, same as before. Torture and execution if they refused to do so. They were forced to go to church. However that did not make them Christians. When they went home after church they would return to their own European ways. To their ancestral cult. The peoples of Europe were never Christians only their so called elites have been Christians. So, to sum it up the Europeans have never been more Christian than they are today, difference is people can now say that we are not Christian, without risking their life.
Just like there is an abyss between the people and the agenda and rulers today, there was an abyss between the rulers and the people in the middle ages.

Not entirely untrue. Since Christianity became compulsory (not merely legal) within the Roman Empire it's been pretty irrelevant who was Christian. After this eased up the situation didn't improve too much, since many would still remain believers as a matter of convenience.
That isn't to say it hasn't profoundly impacted European culture to the point that it has overwhelmingly held Christian values for roughly 1000 years. It is certainly responsible for many of the values you take for granted today.
Of those who are actually Christian? That's between the individuals in question and Christ.
