I love norse mythology and more or less grew up with it, but I don't believe in it.
That being said, I've always felt a connection to my country, my history and its mythology. As a kid, I spent a lot of time hiking and playing in the mountains and forests around my city, and the summers were spent traveling the western coast of Norway by boat. It's hard to explain, but I've always felt a kind of ancestral, mystical connection to my country that I can't put into words. I don't actually believe in spirituality, though, so I feel like an idiot typing this out.

What most people call "Norse" mythology was really Teutonic mythology. And it's not like the entire Norse pantheon was worshiped all at once everywhere. Certain regions or even villages would have a few or even one god/gods that they mostly appealed to, although the others may be given the occasional prayer for certain occasions.
Freyr for example was mostly a western phenomenon, as were the other Vanir. Thor was worshipped widely, Tyr was probably originally the universal Jupiter figure in Northern Europe before his role was shifted to Odin during the Viking age.

I've read some of the Icelandic sagas, scholarly books on Norse religion, and some Asatru writings. Personally I don't think that the old religions and their practice and beliefs reconstructed from the past can be applied in modern society. The local traditions and cultures of pre-Christian Europe were inseparable from their small-scale societies and ways of life in which warring and farming were essential and personal for everyone. These activities still happened and the institutions of kinship and kingship still existed for over a 1000 years after pagan religions were formally prohibited by the Church. But in a modern, secular society and with the nation state the conditions for the old local cultures are no longer existing. So with that goes the old religion and its vitality. Any kind of reconstruction seems too vain and too refined, unlike the actual religions of pre-Christian Europe. The Christian religion is universal in scope and the ideas of the Church have influenced Western Europe and the world for over a 1000 years now. We think as Christians and our sentiments are even more so, as Nietzsche pointed out. It's worth reading the history of the "dark ages" and the bloody foundations of the state. The people in European countries at that time still kept their local family traditions while fervently fighting for their Christian leaders and God. This is obviously different from our own secular, computer technological, and relatively peaceful ways of life. The old mystery Gods don't fit into this world of ours, at least in my opinion. No, you're not getting it. There is nothing fundamentally different about christianity vs paganism that makes it impossible to believe in one vs the other.
The issue is that one is a dead religion while the other is alive. People grow up surrounded by christianity, raised by christian families that taught them about christ ever since they were old enough to speak, and going to church every sunday, and going to bible school, and being surrounded by other christians (and a society borne from christian western values in general), etc etc etc.
Paganism is a dead religion though. No one grows up in this faith. There are no organized institutions of paganism. There is no modern culture of paganism. It's just a couple fringe people rejecting their upbringing and deciding to try out this ancient religion thing.
The thing is you don't CHOOSE what you believe. You can't just decide consciously "I'm going to believe in the greek pantheon today".
