Honestly I think this was a really stupid move. Agreeing to the debate was a smart strategy and a situation he had nothing to lose in. It would have made Clinton look bad, could have draw out the Democratic Primary even farther, and would give him a big platform to talk directly to a large segment of people who have only ever seen him through a media filter.
