Essentially there are as many liberals in America as there are conservatives. This means that there will always be differences of opinion, and that compromise is required to make progress as a society.
What exactly is wrong with conservatives that makes them willfully refuse any compromise, to the extreme that they actively prevent progress for spite even on issues they somewhat agree with?
Liberals literally do not engage in this behavior. Never in the history of the United States have liberals shut down the government or stalled the passing of bills or funding to something. They go through the proper democratic process of opposing it on the floor, voting, and moving on to the next issue if they lose.
Conservatives will dredge up issues that they lost over and over and over. They'll even proactively pass legislation to make it impossible to even discuss an issue.
There's no rational explanation for this behavior other than rampant immaturity.
