Alright, can someone explain to me your tastes in photos?
Might as well make its an ITT: explain your tastes.
Reason Im asking this is because I randomly came here as part of my explore every board mission. Then I see people posting pictures that make no sense. They seem like random every day shots in hope that one might be good, when in reality they all are just strange. There are some like pic related (sorry for stealing it, just looked cool) that I get. Most people would never see it, its worth sharing. Its interesting and I spent half a minute exploring the image before moving on. Thats something worth sharing. Hell, I wouldnt mind someone taking pictures of a sewer. That would be worth spending time looking at. A stroll around a city with random photos, however, is not.
TLDR: What do you think while taking photos on a stroll that makes you take some but not others.

>Then I see people posting pictures that make no sense. They seem like random every day shots in hope that one might be good
This is partially because photography is much harder than most people realise. Its hard to take a good photo without practice, experience and a good understanding of photography. These people who take "pictures that make no sense" are still learning. Many people on this board are still learning the basics.
A photo like the one in your opening post would take a lot of effort and planing to create. You need a good understanding of composition and technical things like exposure settings, aperture and post production. Use of a tripod, ND filters. These are all things you need to learn about, and its unlikely you will just figure them out without direct instruction. Then making the effort to drive out to a location like this as very few people live in a place this interesting.
Another aspect is that you might not be as artistically inclined as people here. Some of the pictures that appeal to people here might not appeal to you if don't have an analytical interest in art.
I like geometry in pictures, so I'm naturally drawn to architectural photography. Specifically, isolated details and textures. This shot from Ming Thein is a good example.

Im a sperg. I appreciate more out of my calc 3 book then the art galleries Ive been to. So youre probably right. Mostly because the shit in that book is like, how do you even discover this on your own.
I tend to hate anything kitsch or with colors that seem unnatural to me.
I like gimmicks using reflection and double exposure as long as they are done well.
Photos lacking a hierarchy while achieving a cohesive texture make me jizz.
High lighting contrast in street photog looks cool and edgy esp. when they have ominous looking buildings.
Number one thing is just the overall composition itself.

>how do you even discover this on your own
So is art, you have to discover it in your brain.
Half the art is your reaction.
The picture you've posted is probably the worst form of photography.
That said, almost none of what is posted here is decent art, but we are mostly mere hobbyists. What you are likely missing most is that individual photographs are basically the lowest form of photography. The true strength of photography is in a series.
I like human interaction. To me, buildings and landscapes are boring
Here's an example of what I mean, I took this a while back. The Asian man was not happy that the street performer magically turned his $10 note into a $5 note

Certainly is

Sick dude, I've never actually shot the mall before. I usually hang out in King George Square.
>>2815118
The mall is usually a bit hit or miss depending on the day. During the week it tends to be just office workers hustling about on their lunch break but Friday afternoon and the Weekend it's not too bad.
I usually shoot with an old Pentax SLR and a Ricoh GR so if you see me around say hi.

Will do, man. I shot this one up the hill from the mall. I was there to shoot the mill but I couldn't resist this one.

Sundays are usually fairly dead, or just generic joes fullfilling their consumer quota prior to a commerce holiday. Like easter, christmas, vaginatines day etc.
Or rather they have been quieter than usual for the last few weeks/months.
But there is a suitcase rummage market on the first and thiurd sunday of each month, top of the mall, up at the square between the library and casino - brisbane/radacliffe square - which is tricky to shoot (shit light and everyone looking at the goods on the ground), but usually has some visually interesting things going on.

I'm working on it, interview Monday. I'll miss all this weekday shots and shitposting.
I enjoy photos that cause me to look twice and discover things I hadn't noticed at a glance. Photos that have been pieced together like a well designed watch, with each element having an integral part of the whole. I enjoy photos that appear to be of ordinary life buy composed in such a way that they are brought closer to the surreal side.

>explain your tastes
Kind of like asking anyone that has spent some time with cinema or music what genre they enjoy, it's a moot question. Because the answer is "anything really, as long as it intrigues me and isn't too simple in all aspects (and even that with exceptions)". I'm mostly interested in composition and structure, yet I can still find well composed works utterly uninteresting if they are too reductive or not so well composed shots highly interesting because they have some sort of emotionality or content that makes the composition an accessory.
The shot you posted though, is utterly boring. I've seen the exact same shot at least ten thousand times, with slight variations. Gearfagging photo magazines seem to love them because they look "different", you need to get your ass out on a cliff at 5am, and you need some technical knowledge to make them. It's postcard material though. That's not a compliment. Subpar composition (I would go as far as to claim that apart from the centered horizon, not much thought went into this) and wonky, unnatural colors aren't enough to carry a photo.
>What do you think while taking photos on a stroll that makes you take some but not others.
That's really a different question than the first one, because what I tend to create and what I find interesting from others are two distinct things.
It's different for everyone. But for the most part I'll stroll around, either purposefully or by chance, and when I see things that peek my interest I'll look if I can either build a picture with or around that thing or structure in my head. I'll try to take the picture in my head before I even touch a camera. And then I'll either have something pocket sized with me or return with something bigger if it's really worth it and can't or won't move.

I like sports, news, and commercial photography, especially automotive, and have actually done all three for a living at various times.
Sadly, that makes it hard to come up with stuff to post on /p/, because I rarely get to shoot sports anymore and my news and commercial stuff is generally not that interesting when out of context, plus it runs into issues with employers and makes it too easy to GIS and find out my real name and location.
Oh, I also do some cosplay when there's a local convention around. I got assigned to cover an anime con once, took a lot of pictures, and the cosplayers liked them enough that they kept asking me to shoot with them again, and it kind of spun off from there. I just do that for fun and not professionally, and don't generally post the photos here because cosplayers generally prefer to control the distribution of their image and especially hate being posted on 4chan.
I try to go out and shoot some landscapey stuff and things like that once in a while, but while I've got good gear and plenty of technical knowledge, my "eye" for it is pretty crummy and it doesn't really motivate me. I really respect people who can look at a scene, realize that it'll result in an amazing photo if they start a 3 hour hike before sunrise, and have the dedication to actually do it.
>>2815253
Oh, I know I'm kind of rambling on here, but I will say that I really enjoy travel photography, even though it's technically pretty much the same thing as landscape or street photography. I find that I enjoy capturing an exotic location much more than a familiar one.
