Twilight Dunes Triptych Framed.jpg

Hello /p/, I've got time for a quick dump so I'm going to post a few images from the last few months. I'm now fully self employed which just as everyone said means that I have less spare time than ever.

Also, I've given in to the lure of square format. For this recent trip it was the only camera I carried into the dunes and it was wonderful to be able to compose them differently. I think this will be a nice change of pace, mostly something I'll just use for those incredibly long backpacking trips or when I want to try something new. Don't worry, I'm just going to start off with some squares I have some other rectangle stuff too.

Starting a thread with the only image with a border just to get you guys riled up. It's not so much a cheesy border as it was a mock-up so my lab can see how I want these mounted and framed. I'm excited to see this one finished.

These scenes were a delight to scan and had great colors right away. Clean dust, quick levels adjustment, maybe a curves mask to fix vignette on the wide lens, and resize.

Are you still using that Jobo? What do you think about some of those new totally automatic systems that have been popping up?

Also thanks for the tutorials on your website, the film post-processing ones are my standard process now, not sure how I managed to get anything decent from scans before.

I'm really glad to hear you enjoy the blog posts. I can't wait to get some more time to work on new stuff like that after the busy season. I love that Jobo, mine is pretty automated so I haven't looked at any other systems that have popped up. The one I got does all the timing of filling and draining for me. And it was free.

Slide compared to negative? Because they have completely different looks and I use both for different scenes. In my experience, negative looks not-so-great for low contrast scenes like dunes at twilight. It's a Mamiya 6.

I can't remember if I posted this one.

Thanks man. I ended up liking it more with the little part of dune so it keeps it from looking like just one image that was split up. Each day there had a slightly different hue to the light that also changes as you look just a little bit in another direction. Definitely an amazing place to study light.

Is this all in one exposure? How much did you have to edit to balance the dynamic range? I can imagine originally it would've been a tad over exposed in clouds yea? Correct me if I'm wrong obviously.
Lastly, what focal length was that shot on? No need to convert to 35mm eq. LF numbers will do.

Great shots m8.

Alex,

I'm curious about your exposures, I've read your blog post about how you meter, which was extremely helpful to me btw, thanks!

Yes it's one exposure on Provia. I don't think I used any GNDs either. The desert can have pretty incredible light and the rocks will get nearly as bright as clouds, but I do believe I also used a subtle gradient mask over the brightest cloud when making my basic curves adjustment. It was a 90mm lens.

>>2881936
Glad those posts help! I tend to overexpose negative film a tad but not by two full stops. It can handle that sort of overexposure though so you'll likely still get a good image. Still, you should have a fine image without over exposing so something may be odd in your process from metering, scanning, developing, etc.

>>2881958
Thanks man! I could imagine it would vignette like crazy wide open, these are all at like f11 or f16.

funny thing is that recently I've been developing and scanning at home and my results have been far more favorable. Man, I am so glad you did that. I always go back to them from time to time, and this is much easier. The tutorial about adjusting color channels in luminosity masks really revolutionized the way I edit photos. Not just landscapes, either. It's so insanely powerful for dealing with unwanted color casts.

I like the triptych, but my eye stops every time one the right-most image. A tad lower, and shop out the 2nd dune so it lines up with the center image. This would give one continuous line. Other than that one nit-picking niggle, a very fine triptych that I would hang on my wall.
>>

I'm considering this change to the image, though it may be late for this first print because I already got excited and sent the files to the lab. I didn't do any crazy shooping to remove the dune, just cropping.

It almost looks like one exposure now, like I chopped up a 6x17 negative. Not entirely sure I like it more this way.

I don't know, man. I think the differences in sky make it clear enough that it's not one single exposure. If it was 100% the same color sky, then it might just look like a chopped up 6x17, but I think there's enough variation to make it clearly different. The sand textures also cleraly show that it's different scenes.
>>
>>2882927
Well yes, and dunes of course don't quite come in that shape. So that's why it's "almost" like a chopped up. Maybe that's what makes it look cool. Like one panorama of a scene that couldn't exist.

Crop looks so much better and well thought out. I'll agree with >>2882927
about the color of the sky and sand texture differentiating the images enough.

The lone background dune bleeding out of the edge of the frame seemed like a sloppy oversight. Just to experiment I added another dune on the left image doing something similar and I think even that works better than the original image you posted. Feels a bit more balanced and the continuation carries throughout the overall composition.

Also just gave your luminosity tutorial a try. My fuck what have I been doing with my images for the past 10 years... This method is absolutely killer!

This.

I know in the post, Alex, that you mention specifically that it helps you get details in highlights, but for me that tutorial really helped me the most with colors in shadows. Even when I had my levels right, shadows would often feel washed out, but being able to get WB correct in shadows without fucking up the whole frame is so huge.
>>
>>2882931
Yes it's definitely more balanced without the extra dune on the right image. I think that one is better on it's own with the dune but for creating a triptych it's better to crop it. Thanks for showing that image, it is balanced that way as well. Also glad to hear another person is on the luminosity bandwagon! It's a game changer no matter what you're shooting.

>>2882935
Absolutely. That was the biggest initial help I got from it, fixing the ridiculous color casts that slide film has in the shadows. Particularly Velvia 100 back when I used to use it more, it was so magenta and luminosity masks completely helped me correct that.
