I agree. The first is in your face, simple, bright and obvious.
The second is, by design, unnatrually high key, with a lot of shadow detail. It has 3 "bands" of brightness from top to bottom and the diagonal bars mess with the balance a bit. To me, interesting but just ok.

I have a problem with highlights in my pictures:
They are sometimes reddish-pink and a bit darker than the rest of the white highlights. they are most common in clouds and when the sky is breaking through leaves etc. I have to adjust the gain by reducing red, thereby making highlights tealish-blue and it makes them look as if they had been dipped in toothpaste.
This is another example, you can see the color in the skylight
I try to avoid this by underexposing and using zebras, but that often leads to the subject being horribly dark. Practically, I can't shoot with bright backgrounds.
Is this because of my camera, my lens or something else? Could a filter fix this?

no penguins on this shot, there are 2 kinds of Cormorants and 2 kinds of seagulls. I actually have shot penguins in that trip. Later on I'll reedit them and post it. And actually it isn't HDR. Just my editing in LR (luminance). The cyan came within my WB, I tried to took off a little, but the picture lost a little of it's evening feeling.

I like elements of this -- the fairly smooth tones, the layering -- but there's something off about it. I guess for one thing the perspective is too wide, this is composed to emphasize geometry and texture, but it looks too 3-dimensional (fisheye) for that. Maybe in part because of that, the framing at the bottom looks weird -- I want to look further down. You blew out your red and blue channels too which fucks up the highlights.

you can crop out the sun or you can keep it in and act like it's intentional. most of the time you do not include the sun in your photo, but when landscape photogs do they underexpose to minimize the size of that circle and then brighten it up again in post. this is kind of a snapshot though, I'm not sure why you're so attached to it.

you could do also do it in post, perspective correction in photoshop like you do for a tall building
as for the location, I can't really see behind you so I can't know how many options you had -= I'd move far over to the right if it was possible, It's just from a compositional perspective you want either more foreground (with a relatively clean cut) to show the world of the harbor or a lot less. One thing you could do is wait for the crane in the LL to turn so you had more open water to cut above it, or just find a day when those boats weren't there.

what you do with sunsets is underexpose them to keep the reds from blowing out and then brighten in post. here it's not too bad but around the sun it looks pretty weird. if you look at your RGB histogram, you'll see the red channel is blown out. that's why it looks orange and not red around the sun: it can't get any redder, but the other channels can and so the color changes unnaturally. with digital you go to great lengths to maximize dynamic range in these kinds of scenes by shooting raw and high bit depth if possible. there's not really any camera I know that gets these scenes to look really good without some postprocessing.
composition-wise your foreground should be different, either just water or something more interesting, it just looks like there's shit in the lower right corner.

great tones, compositions are a little weak. in the first one the plane is facing out of the photo and the birds are flying the other way, so your eye is drawn to both edges rather than the pretty stuff. in the second one the placement of the cruise ship is kind of awkward and static (but not monolithic enough), and again the birds are flying away.

it might be that you just caught the birds a little too late. especially for the cruise ship one, a little earlier and they'd be leading you to it. flocks are tough, you only have a split second and if you miss it it looks like crap.
yeah that's a bit of the snap but I'm REALLY interested in that lady with the dogs and the problem sweater, would've been better with a long lens. too much road at the bottom and too little building at the top in terms of composition, I think.

pretty but you've balanced the colors past realism. that's maybe a personal artistic decision, but I think your audience won't be as wowed if they don't think it's real. you should have panned up further.
>>2881335 >>2881336 >>2881340 these are I-just-bought-a-DSLR shots, you're taking pictures of stuff you found. flower shot just looks like a snap that you centered -- doesn't make sense flat because there's that leaf blade drawing you into the page (and to the left off of the frame...). you could crop or zoom or recompose to focus on that repeated shape.
bottle cap on a picnic table is mundane and the shallow depth of field takes away probably the most interesting thing in the photo, the texture of the table. it's also an awkward, disorienting perspective, I think because the spaces between the boards are at such a steep angle that you try to line your head up with, but also because the bottle cap is positioned so close to the frame edge.
the leaf shot is a little sloppy, the aperture is too small for the look you're going for so the background isn't blurred enough and there's some crap that distracts from your intended composition (leaves at left and right of frame, that crossed stem distracts from the juxtaposition I think you intended too, although you could maybe use that geometry in an interesting way). the dead leaves aren't sharp enough or defined enough -- shadows would make them more interesting. honestly I think the scheme is just cliched and doesn't work, dead leaves hanging in the air look really awkward and the green background is cliche.

I like the first one more because it's more unusual, that vertical group of clouds is very dynamic. the unrealistic color is that your shadows are way too saturated with blue and the clouds are practically magenta. Especially here the strong colors make the light spots seem disconnected from the dark, I think this would look better if you pulled the colors WAY back and focused more on the texture and all of those lines. scrap the leaf on the right, and I might want a tad more of the water at the bottom -- I do like that sandwiched silhouette.

Challenge yourself to shoot with a wider depth of field. Find subjects that allow you to incorporate the surroundings, rather than isolate totally from them. Leading lines, color unity, geometry, whatever. You can isolate with more than bokeh.
Just stay away from foliage and sides of buildings and you'll avoid the worst sins of these threads. Branch out a bit.
