Any war photographers here? Or anyone with that aspiration? I'm starting University in September to study Photojournalism, plan to go straight to a war zone to take photographs as soon as I finish.
When I say "go to a war zone" I mean for example go to Kurdistan and embed with rebels fighting against ISIS
Calm down anon!!
This is a amazing kind of photojournalist, but you will need more than a camera and a university to it! tactical training, exercises, 'endorsers', and this. And a lot of things university won't give you either. Going this raw to warzones will only get you killed!
where you live have riots? start with that! few years covering riots and idiots bashing each other is a nice way to get a notion for what it was to cover people killing each other.
ps.: you're going to be a target.
>pic related
AFP hired two youngers to it's 'war photojournalism', they almost killed others photojournalists and ended getting into the statistics.
we should stop calling them war photographers and start calling them death paparazzi

I've been covering protests for a few years, the one time we had riots I was abroad, I'm from London.
>>2876844
Do you have any army or paramilitary training? Are associated with any media?
>>2876849
My photos have been featured on a few sites, but only because I've sent them in and offered it for free. I've had no army or paramilitary training.

You'll never be Nachtwey in his crisp immaculate white shirt and unblemished dad jeans anyway.
Best parts of the documentary you should watch anyway:

Get as close as he does.

Maybe not a Nachtwey, but hopefully a McCullin.
>>2876852
can you post some of them?
Nachtwey smiling is iconic, that's one of the most ironical smiles I've seen in my life.
>>2876856
You should always strive for Nachtweyism.

If I were OP, I would forget university for the moment.
Join the Air Force or Navy as a photojournalist and just live the dream for the next several years. Gain real world experience and credibility as a photojournalist while building your portfolio.
Later on, go to university and let the military pay for it all.

The RAF and Navy positions are just for marches and flyovers and stuff, not for active duty. Only active duty role is in the Army and I'd need to be there for at least 5 years to even apply for it, if it is available.

Yes you can, but you need to be a legal resident and have a Green Card first.
It's not as hard as one might think, all you need to do is find an American girl to marry you and then you'll get a fiance visa. Worst case scenario, you marry a Puerto Rican named Guadalupe for a few years until you get your green card.

She's O positive, no negative image here.
why not just join the army and enlist as a war photographer? i keep seeing that mentioned around here and there. why waste the huge amount of money getting a degree for a field that you can easily join with no experience? the army is desperate for people who want to risk their asses doing this right?
at least get into something academic like political science. still worthless but you'd learn more about the world than "studying" photojournalism/war photography in a fucking lecture room. just fucking do it.

Navy photographer here. This. Army/Marines guarantees you combat cam, but navy/air force is a more complete media package. I currently cover an aircraft carrier but plan on trying to go Combat Cam in a couple years, which is more jntelligence gathering than phojo, but it puts you in war zones and that makes your resume look great for afterwards.
Plus not to mention, and no offense to anyone here, after very basic schooling at DINFOS, the media school for all branches, i'm positive nearly every graduate is better than any photographer i have ever seen here. I really only visit this board to just shake my head in wonder at what people think photography is. They WILL make you a better photographer, you are forced to interact with people and learn how to actually cover events and capture real moments. Not take flat pictures of trees.
All in all, if you want to be a photographer, the military is an excellent option. We also shoot with Nikon d800s/810s/ and d5s at most commands, and have gear most people could never afford
>>2876853
Are they wearing fucking bicycle helmets??

can't afford the nazi helmet.
I'm a combat photographer for a military other than the US.
I can 110% garuntee you will not see any action for at least 10-15 years, and even then there's a low chance.
No company is doing to hire you to go into any active combat zone straight out of school. You are a liability and an insurance risk to them.
They want people who have already been in the shit, and there's a long list of people to pick from.
Sorry OP. But your only shot really is to go ComCam first.
