How do I photograph sunrises/sunsets? Every photo taken with phone is better than mine (pic related)

keep the horizon level and use a lower aperture and longer exposure
>>2876734
underexpose to keep the highlights from blowing out too much
don't trust auto WB, you WANT some color cast
>>2876734
Grip the dick with both hands.
>>2876748
Not OP, but this fucks me up. When you say "lower aperture" do you mean a lower f stop number or do you mean narrower?
OP here again.
So I was at this hill at sunrise and I took this picture with my 1000$ camera. Then there were other people with their cellphones and one of them took picture I will post in next reply.
>>2877194
This is the picture taken with a cell phone.
Why the fuck it is so much better than mine. That colors... I know I've taken in too much of black hills, but even if I compose my shot with 90% of the sky, picture would not have those colors.

search the following topics on youtube
>how to take landscape photography
>learn how to HDR
>how to edit sunset gimp
>should I sell my camera and learn another hobby?
>>2877195
Also visible person in the foreground! If my subject would be visible sky would be pure white.
>>2877195
this photo isn't good at any cost. Is just a girl doing a 'bridge' while a cellphone took an HDR oversaturated of a sunset.
Don't fall for the numbers of like in the photo, people like everything they see with a cute girl doing something weird. It doesn't mean it's good or not.
>>2877195
that photo is dogshit, you could replicate it by bumping your exposure 3 or 4 stops and square cropping (plus throwing chad off a cliff and getting that qt3.14 to twist and shout in frame). if you don't know how exposure compensation works, that's the first thing you need to look up.
but to really get a great picture of this scene in digital requires some postprocessing to save the highlights, like >>2877196 said you need to look up some photoshop tutorials if you're after good technique
>>2877413
>>2877194
With this photo you can't do much, because of jpeg(69Kb, why. ), but still you can see the point.
>>2877194
Camera settings should be highlights -2, Shadows -2, auto DR on, auto ISO on. Use Pro neg Hi as film sim.
Look at the histogram when shooting, you want the far right bar just clipping.
Also shoot raw as well as jpeg

Holy shit /p/ is truly cancer.
>>2877085
i think of it as narrower so therefore smaller aperature, even though the number is bigger
i think thats right but maybe someone can confirm
>>2877195
this photo is horrible, colourful and some stupid fuck girl posing for the insta likes doesnt make a good photo
look past the girl you wanna fuck and realise how shit the colours are and how weird the photo is
>>2877454
People should get used to talking in terms of:
Smaller or larger aperture - referring to the physical size of the hole.
Lower or higher f/stop - referring t the f/digits.
...otherwise it's just confusing.

yea that makes sense
>>2877456
Years ago I asked a photography tutor why a smaller f number means more light. He said "Errr... It just does. Don't worry about it."
>>2877460
Because elementary level mathematics. The f-stop number is the number you divide the focal length with. The higher the number the smaller the resulting value is because division.
I fucking hate how stupid artfags are, it's not a complicated concept, what would they say when I prove how every positive integer added together up to infinity equals to -1/12? Even that is not a very complicated mathematics, only hairy in some places.
>>2877460
f-number = f-ratio
If you have a 100mm lens set to f/2.0 the physical size of the aperture with be 100/2.0=50mm wide.
f/5.6 on a 100mm lens would have a physical aperture of 17.8mm, but f/5.6 on an 85mm lens would have a physical aperture of 15.2mm.
ezpz once you know, but most photography metrics like f-stop and iso are preeeeeeeetty out dated
>>2877464
Look at you go buddy, you can do maths! :^)
I have the raw files and I downloaded raw therapee. The problem now is what do I do in the program which has like zilion options and sliders. Also started reading a book from rawpedia butbit is more like manual for the program.
Any good resources on how to learn to post process pictures?
>>2877420
What do I accomplish with those settings? AFAIK settings do not impact raw files. Why auto iso on? Shouldn't it be the lowest I can get it without fucking up shutter speed?
>>2877470
endless photo editing tutorials on youtube
also do you guys not just use the photoshop raw plug in?

Why is /p/ such shit?
>>2877457
so much fucking worse than OP's
the point is, surely, that sunrises and sunsets are really boooooooooooooooooooring
>>2877477
The settings are for if you persist in treating the camera like a p&s. Seriously rtfm or sell the cam.
>>2877524
You've mistaken this for the advanced class. It is not.

Sorry, I tend to not enable landscape fags. The same way I don't enable macro fags either.
