You made a mistake. This is YOUR photo thread, and you want feedback. It is not another dump heap for everyone to pile on.
Others said it, but heading into the woods midday in the summer will usually get you nothing but shit because there is basically nothing of interest to shoot. When you do find something, the photos are boring and presented brutally matter-of-fact.
Shooting a set like this is great for learning your gear, trying new things, etc. but rarely yields anything worth keeping.
Maybe next time you do a walk like this, challenge yourself with a theme. Opposing colors, symmetry, groups of 3, texture... at least it will help your "seeing" and teach something. The photos will still be worthless to anyone but you, though.

These aren't horrible, but they're not great. The problem with insect micro shots is that the technical elements generally have to be fucking spot on, in addition to needing to have an interesting subject, composition, etc.

Yeah, that's probably not the greatest idea. Most of the time, you want to isolate the insect. Shooting at f/14 gives you a way too much depth of field, which gives you a ton of clutter in the frame. There's just too much here going on. The bee gets lost in the shot.

This one's better because there isn't so much shit in the frame. Unfortunately, the half-black bee is against a dark background, so much of his body just blends away. Also, I don't know if it's a focus thing or movement thing or some post-processing sharpening thing, but you've got some weird halo action going on along the edges.

I'm shooting with these ridiculous apertures because I'm really having trouble with getting the subjects in focus. That's the only reason for it.
The halo effect might come from my flash, although I'm not sure. It's my first time shooting with a flash. It's a Soligor MF-20A.
I'll try shooting some more with a wider aperture today, maybe I'll get some better shots.

Yeah, I hear you. That's the difficult balance with macro photography.
Not having the entire insect in focus is a problem, but >>2878435 is closer to being on the right track than >>2878358. You've just got to find that sweet spot.
One thing you may want to look into is the concept of focus stacking. It's a common technique for macro stuff, but it's a bit harder to do with live subjects. It's not impossible, but it's tricky. Google it.
Another issue I see is that you're using a 35mm lens. It's not really optimal for macro photography. Basically, longer focal lengths enable you to better compress the depth of field and isolate your subject from its surroundings. I think they make some macro lenses that small, but really the sweet spot for macros is around 100mm. If you don't have one, that's fine. It's not crucial, but you can usually get them fairly cheap, and they'd really up your game.

Yeah, you probably already gathered this, but that kit lens is a jack of all trades and a master of none. It can do some things decently, but macro lenses really do make a world of difference in macro photography. Since you're just starting out, I wouldn't even suggest you blow money on a macro lens, since they're very specialized.

oh yeah, one other piece of advice. soft light is very easy to get in macro photography, you can build a small box OR you can just move your speedlight right next to the subject

The image was straight out of camera, I was surprised by the contrast and sharpness (though I do agree with >>2878679 that the DoF was a bit much, but the image was originally taken for a bokeh thread on another forum and I was freelensing it on the end of an Asahi Pentax microscope adapter at f/5.6) for a lens from the '50s. Also, dem 15 aperture blades are nice.

an easy way to check for lens flares is to move your hand in front of the sun and see if the viewfinder changes. a hood won't help you if you're shooting straight into the sun. you've got a sense of balance in your photos that I like, I should be bored by the subject matter but I'm not. but none of them strike me as great. some thoughts:

you've got slight perspective problems that really hurt the look you're going for. you need to get closer to the ground and spot-on center to take this photo and make it look flat. the artificial doesn't really provide enough of a contrast to the organic here for me, maybe the plants just aren't interesting enough. maybe they're just not lit well enough.

I would have angled down more so the top of the flower would not be over-exposed and almost invisible from the horizon. Lots of orange too. I do like the photograph, just tweaks here and there can make a great shot a greater one

Well to start with I think this is a very beautiful photo. I love your leading lines of the valley leading down toward the lady in the kayak and how she is offset but still a continuation of that line if that makes any sense. The only negative criticism I can come up with is maybe turning up the exposure just a tad; especially with how the trees are kind of in the shadow of the mountain.

If you don't have a tripod with you, then you might want to shoot from a corner, like pic related. Don't tilt camera up or down, just forward and level. I took this from the 5th floor of a parking garage next to the building.

I kinda like the body position, his expression and hair are funny. the light looks pretty natural to me. it looks like you caught him before he hit the ball though, he looks like he's catching it. the oddest thing about this photo is the waist cut, it makes him look a little less active somehow, like he's attached to the edge of the frame. it might be better if you cropped it a bit shorter at the top. maybe I'm just a curmudgeon but I think I'd like this better if the light source was off-camera, or at least if it was more diminished relative to the subject. you're trying to do two different things with this photo -- you've got an extremely high contrast between the corners with saturated, attractive colors in the upper left, and then a subtle, moody low-key scene in the lower-right. your eye is more drawn to the light source than the bird.

I learned a cool trick for buildings and landscapes that night while doing 30 sec exposures.
line your camera up in the same direction that clouds are moving (I don't think it matters if the clouds are moving toward you or away from you). Then you take a long exposure. The clouds will become streaks on your image that form leading lines and make the composition pop. pic related (not my image) illustrates the concept.

i find that when shooting A Thing, i often forget to actually do composition, or the composition comes second to The Thing, and i get restricted bc The Whole Thing should be in the picture, but everytime i manage to stop thinking of Things and looking at lines and relations, the photos get much much better. i think that crop is a good example of this..
