Yeah and you already posted it last thread, so why post it again you dumb cunt? We don't need to see your trash more than once to realise how talent-less you are.
In the last thread, someone said that the building in this shot is about 100 stops underexposed, so I increased shadow brightness and switched to bilateral filter rather than gaussian. Or was he talking about general exposure while taking the shot, because I dont know what else to do with a bright background oither than shoot one or two stops underexposed. I dont want giant, flat, white blobs instead of clouds

ETTR doesn't mean blowing out the highlights, it just means exposing to the point where highlights are still recoverable. You made it sound like you were exposing for the sky and only balancing the exposure by raising shadows. There should be headroom at both ends of the sensor that you can make use of.
If your camera lets you adjust the EVF (jpeg) output use a low contrast setting and your histogram will give you a better idea of the actual raw DR. Then experiment a bit to see how close to clipping you can get the histogram before the resulting raw file has unrecoverable highlights.
>>2876652
>>2876655
you're taking pictures of stuff you think is neat. everyone does this at first, but you need to move away from that and think about the visual interest of the whole picture. It might be possible to get an interesting picture of that webworm tent as a macro photo looking inside the world of the caterpillars or emphasizing the lines of the web and the woven branches
>>2876649
you've got counterpoint here (dead/alive), boring execution. at least your subject isn't centered.
>>2876650
most visually appealing one but that's probably just because of the high contrast. would be better if there was another tree in the lower left, or if the slices of trees at top and bottom weren't there (sloppy framing for such a simple idea). I also want more detail in the tree -- its silhouette isn't that interesting.
>>2876676
Ok, when you say "exposing", do you talk about something done during the shoot or during the post-processing? Because What I thought is going a stop or two above the ideal point, while I normally go a stop or two below and then correct in post.
Also, I shoot in RAW. I rarely shoot in JPG, mostly when doing continous shots.
I also already have all contrast and saturation set to minimum in a custom setting.
As far as I know, "clipping" means when the histogram blows all the way upwards in some areas, right?
My histogramm doesnt change when changing the shutter/iso/aperture, it just goes from yellow to white when I hit what it considers "the sweet spot"
>>2876487
>Ipecac: The Photo
>>2876678
Ok, I checked, i set Saturation to -2, not all the way to -5. But I also set Sharpness to -5 because I do a lot of video, and I was told it prevents those weird lines when having something striped in the picture.

It's a common shot, but you did fine with it. It's not a great version of this, but it's adequate. Too much sky and the hiker's feet are too lose to the edge of the frame, but other than that it's alright. It should get a dozen or so likes on Facebook and be completely forgotten.

>I posted it again for some constructive criticism.
It's boring. There's nothing here. It's two plants with shit floating in the air. There's no real indication of what where supposed to be looking at or why. Even if you just take it as an abstract shot of shit floating in the air, there are no interest shapes or composition. Why did you take this shot? Why do you like it? You want constructive criticism, tell me why you shot it and what you wanted us to see.
>>2876459
It's a sunset. It's no different than any other sunset. The colors are fine. The composition with the trees makes the whole thing feel imbalanced and lopsided. Other than just an exercise of trying to expose a sunset there's not really anything here.
>>2876467
This could've been a killer shot, but the composition and balance is really uneven. You were standing too far to the left of center, and it shows. You've done the best you could with perspective from where you were standing, but it's clear that you weren't centered. If you're trying to get a centered shot like this, you need to be fucking dead on.

The dutch angle is awful and disorienting. The lighting is also bad. The post-processing needs a lot of work. It's not very sharp and the silhouettes don't really stand out very well.
>>2876487
Nice job for what it is. Not the most interesting texture or pattern, but that's most a comment on the subject than the execution. It probably could use a tad more contrast. It feels a little dull for a minimalism B&W shot.
>>2876491
>Or was he talking about general exposure while taking the shot
That. I wasn't that anon, but you can tell just looking at this that you tried to recover massive amounts from the shadows. You can get away with a little bit of exposure compensation in post, but not the amount you were going for. Even still, if you had shot the exposure perfectly, there doesn't appear to be any thought to composition here. It's a muddled mess of shapes.
>>2876492
>Welp. How do I keep my EXIF data after tinkering around on Photoshop?
What's your workflow? Ps doesn't automatically scrub EXIF data, so it's getting lost in some weird step probably. As for the show itself, I think I get what you were going for with trying to make the light posts along a horizontal line. First, the idea is shitty. But, if you're going to do it, make sure it's executed perfectly. Here, they're not horizontal; they're just crooked.

>>2876459
I don't like the framing here, the tree isn't large enough to act as an anchor to the picture so it is just a distraction. The frame cuts off the right edge of the cloud in a clumsy way. but I disagree with what >>2876682 said, it has potential as an abstract. I might be biased though, I've been taking a lot of these pictures lately.
>>2876656
Interesting. The execution blows, but I feel like there's a good picture to be had here. I'd definitely go back and reshoot if I were you. There's way too much wasted space at the top and let of the frame.
>>2876657
That fill light in the foreground doesn't add anything at all.
>>2876683
This is pretty sweet. I dig the balance of the composition, which is a little trickier for square shots. So what's going on with all this stuff? Is this the remnants of a firework shot? Because, if so, that's neat as fuck. I've never seen that particular thing captured that way.

>it has potential as an abstract
There is nothing about this shot that would make it abstract. It's clearly just a tree silhouette against a sunset. It's as much of a literal, straight forward representation of the scene as you could get.
>>2876678
By "exposing" I mean during the shot.
Just looked at your cams manual - the histogram not moving is a weird one...
Try using zebras at 105% to give an indication of when the raw file clips.
Appreciate you only shoot raw. Sounds like you've already got your settings right if you've minimised contrast.
Nice shot btw (didn't see the original) ;)
>>2876699
>There is nothing about this shot that would make it abstract. It's as much of a literal, straight forward representation of the scene as you could get.
look I don't want an internet fight but I respectfully disagree. the background is not "a sunset", it's a cloud lit by a sunset (and what's more abstract than a cloud?), and the form and lighting of the cloud provide a fair amount of complex visual interest, IMO. The smooth transitions between highly contrasting colors also provide visual interest and help to delineate form. if the tree wasn't there and the framing was adjusted it could be a pretty picture indeed.

Appreciate the crit about being slightly to the left of centre, but if we extend that logic I'd have needed a viewer on each bench to meet your standard of geometric perfection...though that does give me an idea.
>>2876686
>muddled shapes.
I tried getting the Bell and the Cross on one line while havin g the cross at 2/3 horizontal and the bell at 2/3 vertical
The angels kind of ruin the shot imho.
>>2876701
I turned on Zebra and I am somewhat confused.
It doesn't change based on aperture/ise/shutter either, but sometimes it "triggers" when a bright object is outside the center and goes away when it is in the center of the shot.
Also, should I mess with shadows/highlights in the settings or keep it a straight line?
>>2876708
Do you have exposure set to centre or average/matrix? That could be what's causing the freaky zebra behaviour.
I would reduce shadows and highlights a bit and see how that works IRL.
Just a quick portrait of my friend while out and about. I'm just starting up again after several years. unfortunately I sold all my cameras but have invested in a Galaxy S7 which I am using as my main digital. It makes for a great Camera but I'm very fearful of dropping it.

>reduce shadows and highlights
Wouldn't that crush blacks?
Also, I am completely out of my depth here. I found "metering mode" which I can set for "whole screen", "spot" and "center" but I guess this applies to focus as well.
>>2876707
Yeah, no, the guy sitting on the seat has nothing to do with the perspective of the room. He's an important element, but he doesn't make the shot itself crooked. The perspective issues deal with the lines on the ceiling, the lines on the floor, the walls, etc. Having a person doesn't make or break it. He's really a non-element as far as perspective is concerned.
The issue with this shot is perspective, not necessarily symmetry. The perspective affects the symmetry, but that's just a symptom, not the problem itself. Check out pic related. The red dot is dead center. But the leading lines in your room push the eyes all over the place. The lines converge all over on the left hand side of the frame, which puts the shot off balance.
Not all shots have to be perfectly centered. Your leading lines don't have to converge at the exact center of the room, but in this shot you're ALMOST centered, but not quite, and that's the problem. If you're going to go for a centered shot, then fucking nail it. If you don't want a centered shot, then don't be 98% of the way centered. It throws the whole balance off.
>>2876721
Holy mother of god m8. Ok.
I fucking hate reshoots.
PS thanks - I appreciate the effort you put into the perspective breakdown. I'm going to have dreams about misaligned green lines now.

>look I don't want an internet fight
Then quit spouting out shit when you have no fucking clue what you're talking about.
>and what's more abstract than a cloud?
You clearly have no clue what the word "abstract" means.
A cloud can be an abstract representation of something else, or you can shoot a picture of a cloud that's so abstract that you don't know it's a cloud. But if it's just a straight up picture of a cloud it's in no way abstract. Is this shot trying to represent the oppression of refugees in third world countries? Sure, then it may be an abstract shot. But shapeless does not fucking equal abstract. A picture of a cloud is just a picture of a cloud. What's more abstract than a cloud? Fucking anything that's actually abstract.
>the background is not "a sunset", it's a cloud lit by a sunset
Stop being a pedantic cunt. It's a fucking sunset.
>>2876728
Fuck it. There's no need to reshoot, unless you just really want this shot. I say fuck it and move on.
My advice is just this: When you're shooting a shot that has lots of natural lines (usually dealing with architecture), then slow down just a bit and think about where you physically are in relation to the room. If you've got wooden floors, look at the lines on the floor. If you've got straight edges on the ceiling, look at those. If you've got benches with a gap in the room, make sure you're really centered between them. If you're off by a few inches in either direction, it really makes or breaks a shot.
And, again, this is only because the shot is ALMOST centered. Not every shot has to have perfect symmetry. But if you're going to go for it, then get it done.
It's a cool scene otherwise.
>>2876720
By "reduce" I mean raise shadows. Sorry, my bad.
Metering mode won't affect focus. Use "whole screen" and see if that makes it behave a bit better.
>>2876715
...how dark was this shot before you started trying to rape the exposure and shadow sliders?
>>2876736
Yes, but a bit still remains. I'm using my monitor as test subject. some parts are still zebra-ing when at the edge of the screen.
Also, in video mode I already did the shadow-highlights thing. do I still need to repear that step in post-processing? Because in colour correction I often end up with a very contrasted image, especially because I set gamma-master to something like 0.8.
I never know when to apply what kind of processing., because most tutorials focus either on the shoot or on the editing, never both.
>>2876729
here is a crop of that photo that I consider abstract. I'm not really interested in arguing with you over semantics, although I will say if your idea of the meaning of abstract art is representational art:
>Is this shot trying to represent the oppression of refugees in third world countries? Sure, then it may be an abstract shot.
your opinions deviate sharply from those of the rest of the art world.
I would just like to assure this guy >>2876459 that, although his photo isn't great, not everybody agrees with your assessment that it's "just a sunset"

People whining about the rpt, people posting endless gear questions when there is a gear thread, Mexicans asking for Photoshop, and tripfags are what's killing the board. The rpt can give good advice. My own photos have come a long way since I first posted my own photos here, got some good tips from anons.
It's a good resource, id be happier if some people put in even a modicum of effort, but it is what it is. If you don't like it, you can always filter it, and stop contributing to the boards downfall.

A lot of the people posting in here have only one or 2 photos. This is going to overhwlem people, and likely result.in less feedback. I agree, if someone has a set (probably 5 or more) they should post their own thread. However, I have done this in the past and received very little feedback, while at the time an abortion of an isi thread had hit bump limit from people shitposting. For one or two photos, rpt is perfect. It's easily filterable if people don't want to see one or two random snapshits, and if people feel like giving some crit they can auite easily, and the people here are often the ones that need it most.

I don't have inst, and I don't really feel like being mean this morning, but from what I've seen of it, if you post something with at least 10% effort, and apply some sort of vsco filter, you will get a lot if likes. Bonus points are awarded if someone is hiking.
>>2876789
Wait until you have more than two photos. It's that simple.
Build up a set, which is what you should be doing anyway, and then post them at all once. It makes no sense to trickle them out, one by one, and to have every single one of them either totally ignored or given a half-assed critique by some guy who's trying to do 50 different critiques for 50 different photographers in ten minutes.
>>2876776
Exposure was intentional in post processing to my taste. Unsure why the skin tone is strange though. Really more of a test of the S7 camera than anything else, same with this.

>>2876739
I'm not sure the monitor is a good test subject. It's strobing so who knows what it's doing to the cam.
Rule of thumb, get the exposure as even as possible when you shoot then fine tune in pp. ideally the histogram fills up as much space as possible (i.e. there's information in shadows, mids and highlights) unless you're deliberately crushing blacks or clipping highlights.
The in camera shadow highlight thing is so what you're looking at in the viewfinder is as close to a linear film curve interpretation of the raw file when you expose at the time of shooting as possible. That's how you judge the right exposure when shooting. If you want extra contrast in the final result add it in post.
Is auto WB fucking things up as well? Don't understand the gamma reference.

Nope, I form my own opinions. I've admitted on many occasions that she has some good photos, it's just that a lot of them aren't. You can continue to keep trying to get a piece of that purple godess, but whitenighting on the internet probably won't help.
Honestly, just look at the number of pictures she takes, compared to the number of actual good photos. An appropriate analogy is the monkeys with typewriters, have them type enough, and eventually theyll turn out a masterpiece, its simple odds.
>>2876834
I think you have unrealistic definition of good then. Can you post some good photos?
Good doesn't mean exciting, btw. I'm not arguing she shoots exciting subjects.
>>2876811
With Gamma I mean "Lift/Gamma/Gain" or "Colour Correction" in post processing programs.
I heard RAW files are just all the information that hits the sensor, so does Adjusting Contrast and Saturation and Curves etc. even impact the RAW? It impacts the videos I'm making since they're MP4.
Also, I don't know what you mean by "linear film curve interpretation of the raw file". Generally I dont understand that entire sentence.
Should I mess with Shadows/Highlights curves in the camera or not? Should I generally try to achieve to an as flat as possible end result?
>>2876843
>Honestly, just look at the number of pictures she takes, compared to the number of actual good photos.
Now you're reaching. She's a Fuji shooter with manual focus lenses, she is obviously not just snapping off 11fps constantly and picking frames.
And even if you weren't, have you ever seen HCB's contact sheets? He'd take like 40 shots of a location until he got the one he wanted. If you're judging isi for this, your newfag is showing.

what do you mean unrealistic? I don't feel the least bit tempted to even SAVE any of those photos. there's plenty of stuff that's been on /p/ that I've liked more than that, just look at any of the photobooks. "unrealistic" is expecting people to think your photo is good just because it's correctly exposed, or because you tried (and like I said, one of those doesn't even pass that test).

Aight. When looking through the viewfinder at the scene you're photographing, you want a flat image - the histogram and zebras/blinkies are linked to that flat image. That flat image is the best representation of the scene to base your ETTR technique on. That flat image is a linear film curve, which is the simplest interpretation of the raw data. If you use a high contrast setting your histogram and blinkies will tell you that highlights are clipping well before they actually clip in the raw file. If you use a flat setting the histogram will show clipping just before the raw file clips. You need to judge from experience just how far to the right you can push the exposure before the raw file clips. It will be easier to do that with a flat image in the viewfinder.
The aim is to capture as much data in the raw file as possible.
Any clearer?
Once you have that raw file you can do whatever you want to it in pp, like reduce highlights , saturation, contrast, reduce the exposure, add brightness, change white balance or tint...whatever you need to make it look the way you want it.
>>2876876
You first.
>>2876895
>you are completely fucking retarded, it's an sRGB jpg and the red channel is overexposed. just look at the histogram.
This is bait or autism, I'm not sure which.
A blown red channel shooting into the sun or its immediately periphery is not the same thing as a "a blown-out mono lake sunset"
If you think you can take a photo like that without spiking your red channel, I'd love to see you try it.
A spiked red channel is not the same as blown highlights regardless. I think you don't really understand how to read a histogram and want it to be more objective than it is.
thought this turned out brettygud for being shot form a moving car. One of the nicest looking sunsets I've seen recently
>>2876901
>If you think you can take a photo like that without spiking your red channel, I'd love to see you try it.
it's not difficult pal, any serious landscape photographer underexposes sunsets and shoots at raw and maximum bit depth to solve this exact problem. and yes, the photograph is blown out. the effect is loss of color contrast in the highlights, her sky looks like a pizza pie.

I am a beginner but I will try to express my feelings about this photo. The fact that nothing is in focus and that I am looking directly into the sun hurts my brain. Maybe rotate your subject so he will show some face? I think that looking someone's flat back is kinda boring. I like the light on his shoulder, but that light would be even better on the face or something more interesting.
>>2876923

That's not irony, that's why I hate the RPT. Why do people think concentrating all board's photos into a single thread that hits the bump limit almost immediately and then dies soon after is a good idea? It's counterintuitive to the way 4chan is structured and the way posting works.

>And even if you weren't, have you ever seen HCB's contact sheets? He'd take like 40 shots of a location until he got the one he wanted. If you're judging isi for this, your newfag is showing.
Thanks for proving my point. "He'd take 40 shots until he got the one he wanted". He didn't post every single one of them for critique hoping that at least one would be good. There was actual curation. If you don't realise this, your new is showing.
>>2876868
I'm not going through all her photos to link it. Shes posted it her a million times, I've called her out on it, and she's admitted to it, so if you feel like arguing with the person who actual tool the pictures and admitted doing so, go ahead. It's the dead tree stump with roots that is partially submerged if you really want to be a detective and try to prove both myself and isi wrong about her own photographs.
I'll also reiterate for those of you that are a little simple. She takes some good photos. She also takes a lot of shit ones. That's fine. The issue arrises when anons call her out for posting 80 photos, perhaps 2 or 3 of which are good. She then defends the fuck out of the shit ones as "muh art".
>>2876885
I personally don't find it voyeuristic, creepy, or "dominant". Simply capturing a moment in time of some day in a fairly decent way to be honest.
I've been taking pictures like a madman lately, I'm very happy with this shot.
>>2876772
1. bad angle, you should have either gone one giant step to the left, or committed to one point perspective on wall with window. Note, the one point perspective is a much more difficult shot because you have to nail not just the verticals, but also the horizontals.
2. too high, you only need to be about 18 inches (about half meter) above the tub.
>>2876964
Hey moopco did isi touch you on reddit again
>>2876964
Her boring photos show repetition of themes and ideals deeper than making a pretty picture.
Are you familiar with William Christenberry at all? You should be if you're looking at isi and thinking "boring"
>>2876969
you shouldn't be. the sweat bee is out of focus, the red channel is blown out so your flowers don't look right, the angle is awkward (should be lower I think), and the composition is lousy. flower bunches at top right and bottom distract and the subject of your photograph, the bee, is awkwardly positioned (would be better on the left, people read photographs left to right).

What are these themes? The constantly changing landscape? I can appreciate that if done correctly, her stuff doesn't really show this though. If youd like I can set up one of my cameras to take perfectly exposed photos of my backyard every hour for a month, and then I'll post a thread with it if you'd like? I'll title it "as the grass grows", and you'll lap that shit up wont you. It will be a chronicle of my despair at the grass growing, and my having to mow it, and the everyday drudgery of day to day life in the suburbs.

>>2876975
Also, I like how you have now conveniently ignored that Fuji has focus peaking, so "muh vintage glass" isn't a reason for 8 billion photos with 3 keepers. Also, what is hyperfocal?
>>2876982
Isi is actually much more skilled than William Christenberry in every objective sense of the word. I can tell you don't know him after all.
It's long term photography. She is doing similar things in the same place but is younger with a smaller body of finished work.
Wouldn't be surprised if she literally knows him. He's from her neck or the woods.
>>2876984
ideally your camera has rgb histograms so you can chimp and see if the individual channels are blown out. even then you sometimes need retard-level mods like uniwb to be perfect
http://www.malch.com/nikon/UniWB.html
if that stuff isn't available to you, 1) shoot raw if possible, 2) shoot high bit depth if possible 3) underexpose and brighten in post (WITHIN REASON) for 3 you will have to work from experience, use
http://www.fastrawviewer.com/
or
http://rawnalyze.rawtherapee.com/
to check if your raw file is clipped. if you don't have raw capability photoshop/gimp/many others generate color histograms for jpegs. you don't have to be super autistic and get every pixel perfect but with a blowout like you've got in that photograph the tone of the flowers is significantly impacted.
>>2876992
Where do you get the idea she takes billions of photos? She posts about 40 a week.
>>2876979
... and that takes us right back to square one.
>>2876794
>given a half-assed critique by some guy who's trying to do 50 different critiques for 50 different photographers in ten minutes.
And this isn't to say that you aren't trying, I'm just saying that the RPT doesn't lend itself to thorough, constructive criticism.
I also absolutely think that beginner photographers should start their own threads. It may be difficult to tell that a newbie is consistently using the wrong ISO from one or two photos in an RPT, but if he or she posts a thread full of them you can start to get a clearer idea of what they're continually doing wrong, instead of accidental flukes.
Conversely, a photographer might be more resistant to criticism if the one or two photos they post in here get a "these are shit gtfo", as opposed to a more methodical and thought-out critique of the last two or three weeks' worth of work.
It really is bizarre to me how much pushback I get on this idea that RPT's are bad.

I'd say the obvious lack of curatory skills falls on those who can look at my site without seeing patterns form beyond "you shot the same beach more than once, why??"
C'est la vie en fotofaggin tho. Why am I even a topic in this thread?

I'll happily take a free copy, as I said, I like some of your photos.
Also as I said, I understand why thing are photographed more than once, I just don't think it makes sense in the way you've done it. I simply hats the fact that your threads always detail the entire board for 3 days or so, or until the bump limit is reached.

I love this shot. It makes me think of a rural family with a bunch of cats in their attic they can't get rid of - and stop trying - and the grain and light leak add to the comfy informal and warm tone. LP

Tfw a fucking plane comes past in the middle of your exposure.

>I just don't think it makes sense in the way you've done it.
Which is? I wasn't aware of any singular approaches. Sometimes I maintain similar compositions and dimensions across unrelated photos and keep them together, sometimes I maintain very divergent compositions of the same subject over a period of time.
Could you cite the subject you're referring to for better understanding?
