I have the most beautiful subjects around me but Iusually suck fuck at capturing them. This is a whole patch of spiderweb and I struggled bad to get a shot of it. Was the best time of day too, just about golden hour with low dappled sun.
Anyone have any advice about this sort of shot? Should I have gotten lower or higher? Deeper or more shallow DOF? Guh.

Didn't take it, but I'd say it was shot with a lot of DR, with the highlights brought down in post, the black point was raised, and lastly selective hue/saturation adjustment to make the nice contrast between the orange-reds and purple-blues.

That's okay anon. No one knows much about highlights and shadows when they're just starting out. Avoid shooting in bright sunlight, during the day. You'll get lots of blown out areas. Try to shoot a little bit after dawn, or right before/during sunset. And aim to keep the metering a little on the underexposed side, so that you don't blow out the highlights. Shadows can always be recovered more than highlights in post.

You should try to not overexpose the highlights - in this case the clouds - the next time you're out doing some landscape stuff.Why? Well, because you cannot retain much image data from 'blown out' areas in post - which sucks.
The sensor inside your K-3II tends to be strong at recovering the shadows, so try to underexpose on location and push the RAW file when post-processing the image. This way you'll get way more dynamic range and clouds/highlights that won't be all blown out.

Feel free to watch videos, read articles about landscape photography and most importantly, get to know your camera. It'll take some time and of course it'll take some practice as well.. but it's worth it.

You must not spend much time outdoors. Sometimes when you ask a mountain to change it's location so you can take a better photo it doesn't want to. In this case I asked the world to be in a different place, but it wouldn't so I had to take the shot from where I was. Also didn't feel like digging a hole to shoot from lower.

There was a decent amount of post work. Brought the highlights down and raised shadows, whites and blacks. There was also a slight split toning effect and some other parts. But mostly the light was just amazing that night.

I really like the contrast with the grey street and the fire. What I think would look better, was if the person were a little less cut off, or the angle were a bit higher, so we saw the whole head, but not necessarily the shoes. I also think that it would look a bit better if the person were a bit closer, though that may contradict my previous statement, unless you combine the two. Honestly, I feel like there is a bit too much blue going on with the jeans, and it adds a bit too much colour. Otherwise, the colour scheme is fine, and looks marvelous. I really like how reflective the pavement is as well, it's was obviously raining, and the fire there is the opposite of water, it's really cool. I also really like how the warm colors of the fire contrast with the cool/dull colours of the pavement, and I think if the person were a bit farther away from the fire, we could really see that contrast. (haha let me repeat myself a bit)

Action: 4/10 I think the person isn't in the best pose to show their actions correctly, maybe if you shot it a bit later, or perhaps a tad earlier?

I like the colors and how they combine with the skyline and the details but the whole thing seems a little messy. Can't tell you how to position yourself to get a better composition though, you seem to have gotten pretty much the best shot with the avaliable surroundings.

I do like your editing a lot actually. I think I got pretty caught in the moment with trying to frame all of the cranes within the foreground fence that I didn't think about whether it would be enough to make a compositionally dense enough photo, which I think your cropping does quite well, keeping the photo visually engaging throughout. Thanks! I cropped actually, I thought a tight crop would work best to show the texture of the fire and leave as little as possible of the blurry mess that is the rest of the shot. And there's that other flame from the ground which I thought might be best to eliminate.
