Anything will get you started mate. Borrow your mates camera and have a play, that's the easiest way to learn. You can pick up old canon and Nikon DSLRs for next to nothing with kit lenses to learn with, see if you like the hobby before splashing out a heap of money.

You don't need a DSLR. Anything you can put on a tripod and trigger from a remote or timer will be fine.

There is more to taking a good photograph than knowing 'the right settings'. If your photos suck it's probably not because you don't have a good enough DSLR or because you weren't using the right mode.
