carlo is at 'roo and I haven't felt like posting my concert stuff. Shot Silversun Picksup last Tuesday (Joywave openee, but I was too late to get any shots from the pit, had to settle with shots from the crowd)
Just got back from my first house show (The Fur Coats, Thomas Mudrick, and headliner, Lola Buzzkill) got on the list because I knew one of the bands. Defenitely really fun to be at, not the greatest shooting environment obviously. Will post some of those photos from tonight in next couple of days.

they were doing a 3 song policy but there were too many photographers so they said they were gonna cycle us into two groups but me being a dumbass I said yes when they asked if I wanted to go in while the first group was there and there were only like 2 other photographers in the second group
so I got kicked out and I complained to the guards and by the time they said I was allowed in I was the only one left and I chilled very hard and got some great pics

I'm young. I'm still in school. my only time to shoot non-residency and non-weekends is the summer. I thought this was going to be the summer where I go on tour and it doesn't look to be that way.
according to my archive, I've shot just under 150 gigs. that is a very insignificant and small number that I plan to grow. the number one advice I give to people who ask me about music photography is to keep on shooting. you learn from continuously shooting and that's the only real way to do so
what I've learned from danny is that you don't get better unless you keep on doing it and maybe you personally will never like my shit but what matters to me is seeing my own personal improvement and seeing how far I can take this thing because it amuses me. all the touring photogs I've met over the weekend are in their early 30s and it makes me feel good that I can almost taste that position when I'm a decade younger. age doesn't mean shit but longevity does.

Here's a photo of the opener for The Growlers. This dude was probably one of the most interesting opening acts I've seen so far. All he did was have two turntables going, one playing a track, the other was ready to play another track, no scratching, no cool transitions, just playing the song on the vinyl.
While the song was playing this dude would dance SUPER seductively off to the side of his DJ table. He got shirtless very quickly, but I left the pit after the first song since I knew he wouldn't be doing anything that interesting.

Yeah, the XT1's performance is limiting when it comes to shooting in lower light. Almost always forced to shoot wide open at the venues I hit up around town but if lighting is great or it's outdoors/daytime, I narrow up the aperture for that nice sharpness. Very rare though.

She had to climb up on something then bumped into two of the band members WHILE they were playing and tripped on her way back. The guy giving her the finger is the singer in another band who plays there often and the other dude with the camera is someone who is really widely received in this scene. and they agreed with me on her not being very cool. She was being rude and just really fucking annoying and no one was digging it.

So I have gotten unpaid gigs at some venues recently which is nice, but generally is it easier to find opportunities through bands or venues? Is it proper to email "band from mu people might care about" asking for a press pass for permission to shoot even if you don't know them? I don't see how it'd hurt to try.

you can try asking the band but what benefit does it have for them if you aren't good? ya feel?
that's why shooting with publications is the safest option. you tell them what shows you want to shoot, they send the requests, you shoot the shows.
not to say that the "hit up the band" approach is bad but you have to think that odds are there's someone hitting them up every tour date. but sometimes they don't care. sometimes they'll say yes to everyone because it costs them nothing and they might get a cool pic of themselves. depending on the size of the band.
I like shooting for publications but I'm sick of it. I can't do photo stories that way. sure, I can do shots of the line waiting to get in, venue filling up slowly, etc but you can't really tell much of a story unless you have access. at shows at least. festivals is easier

I'm too shitty to get a press pass. So I was thinking of buying a point and shoot, since they're usually allowed, and just shooting from the crowd. What would be the most important thing for me to look for? Camera with the widest aperture for clubs with shitty lighting? Longer focal length in case I can't fight my way through the front row? I was thinking of buying a Ricoh GR since everyone seems to endorse it. But for the same price I've seen a Canon with a slightly wider aperture and I'm wondering if in this situation would the Canon be more suitable for that kind of environment.

you gotta shoot smaller venues that don't care about photographers until you have enough good photos to get press for bigger ones. I don't recommend buying a point and shoot just to shoot shows or at least for that reason
here's a friendly random suggestion: bring your DSLR to warped tour. you can get good shots from the crowd and they don't care if you bring it. plus it's all daytime so your photos will look good. then make a site and try press again.

My photos are technically sound for the most part and I understand how to use a camera just fine, but I need practice shooting for the right moment. I'm not at all worried about not being good and I know a shit photo if I've taken it.
I've got about 15 shows on my schedule now since I've made my post and I don't really see any point in not trying especially since I'm confident and pleased with my work. The hitting up the venue approach seems to be working best for me apparently. If the venues want me there, I'll be there. Plus venue managers can refer me to others of they end up pleased with the work I've done and I don't see how making connections is a bad thing. They work pretty close together here.
I hadn't thought of publications before your post. There are plenty of indie mags in town I could hit up. Any other ideas for publications?

how big are the venues in question out of curiosity? it's good that works out for you.
also, you learn timing by shooting and just watching bands in general. predicting when a member will jump, getting them while they're off guard etc. it's pretty hard to help you there because you kinda just study live performers. you can always go on youtube and watch videos of the band. this really helps with bands on the bigger level because their shows are much more coordinated. I was shooting the weeknd and found the whole song medley they allowed me and was able to time jumps and fire and I would've been blindsided if I didn't
and YES. hit up the indie mags. they're the ones who you are gonna hit up. you're not gonna get any replies back from national publications yet unless you're really fucking good. I got really lucky with that one. I still shoot regionally for the indie mags though. national publications don't always have an interest in touring band galleries.
