On Sunday I shot a wedding for the first time 100% on primes.

They have been making the way into my workflow more and more and this time I took the step of leaving my go-to loadout of 24-70 and 70-200 in my camera bag and rocking a 20/35/50/85.

Why?

It is hard to put into words why I have been moving more towards primes. First of all the image quality is maybe 2% better but it is not really about that. Also you do get a much stronger separation shooting at f2 on a 50 or f3.5 on an 85 but again it is not really about that.

I think that using primes forces you to get closer, get more involved and fill the frame with your feet. Also it is more fluid, because you are not stopping for a fraction of a second to zoom, you get far more invested in the moment.

So, I present a selection of images from the day, constructive abuse gratefully received.

I'll go through all the shots for you later when I get time OP but it feels like you're actually being held back here and not getting into the right position to make the most of using the primes. Some shots are too tight and others lack compression that a longer lens would have given.

I'll give proper critique later but fair play for posting these here, I was guessing you would get torn to shreds but I suppose so few people actually post paid work here for critique that people aren't as hostile about it

Honestly, I have shot 300+ weddings and I have only had one truly revolting human being as a bride. I have way more run ins with mothers of the brides for whom I turn the Cheshire up to 11 and also dial up the camp a bit.

It is not as bad as people think, in the UK at least.

As a whole OP I'm struggling to find much worth really critiquing here. The vast majority of these are not posed and feel like opportunist taken over peoples shoulders. I assume there are a lot of posed photos to tick off the list to include in the wedding album but there's nothing here showing any sort of relationship. You've left out what I feel are fundamental shots like the brides maids helping the bride or just chatting with them, same goes for the best man helping the groom. You know the really emotional shots? Is there anything from the actual ceremony? The alter shots as it were, the ring shots etc.

If you've posted this set as something to be analysed based on your used of primes instead of zooms then there's very little to work with because everything here is very bland.

I'm sure you already know but technically this is spot on, you've nailed the focus and exposure and you haven't overcooked the processing which is all great. In terms of framing you've done well to isolate the subject and it looks kind of dreamy with the bodies left and right framing the centre but there's so little going on here aside from her smile that I think this comes off as bland. A wider framing probably would make things worse because it looks like no one else gives a fuck but this is just a picture of one smiling lady in the end and there is very little else to say about it.

This could be my monitor talking but these look over saturated to me. In the first image you look to be about 1-2 foot out of position to the left. You could have gotten what I assume is the best mans face better if you moved over more to the right. The second picture is much like the first where you've framed a lovely reaction but it's so isolated that I'm struggling to really enjoy it.

You need to know when to kill your babies, when you have a great shot but you just know it's a bit shit then you need to cut it and I think this is one of those shots. His eyes are closed. It would be absolutely magical if you got this with his eyes open but his eyes are closed so I think it should be binned.

This is nice, it's two old dears with healthy smiles and that's all well and good but when you have such a large body mass with their back against the camera it takes away a lot. This is another shot that comes across as you being too far away and kind of.. stealing this shot with the wrong lens. I can't really get into the emotion on the ladies faces because I can see nothing related to the person they're smiling at. I'm not sure how could have gotten this any better with an 85mm lens but I feel this shot would be a lot better if you were further to the right and shot this with a 35mm. I'll mention more on this but it looks like you got caught with your pants down with the 85mm lens here.

Solid shot, some isolated shots work but only when it's blatantly obvious what they're doing. In this case it's a toast and she's raising her glass and we can see other glasses so it all adds up. There are no backs or the back of peoples heads that we are left wondering about so this works

These can all be bundles together because they are the exact same images just with different subjects. One in focus and another person out of focus. They're all smiling which is great but what are they smiling about? It doesn't feel forced but it's just not genuine when you're so tight in and can see so little of the surroundings to back up the emotion being displayed.

Overall OP the pictures are technically very good but I'm really at a loss for words, if this is a set of wedding photos then why are you not showing THE wedding photos. The bride getting a pep talk from the brides maid. The shot down the aisle of the couple holding hands and looking into each others eyes. Are you holding them back because they are the pictures the client is actually paying for? All of the stereotypical wedding shots are missing from here and we're just left with some random laughing people.

Take it all with a pinch of salt. You were walking around in that venue with more gear on your shoulders then most of /p/ would ever dream of owning and you were actually putting it all to work so mad fucking props. You've processed them all in a way that looks just right for bog standard wedding work so I'm sure the client will enjoy them. There are bright healthy colours for the most part and the contrast isn't too high to be offending.

pic 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, 21, 22 are just shitty "point camera straight at thing with zero composition, create utterly boring snapshit"

Your "photography" is essentially the amateur check-list of make sure everyone at the event got a Department of Motor Vehicles / Prison line-up Facial and move on.

It's a wedding, the bride doesn't need really low quality thoughtless portraits churned out of people she should already know. Your entire work projects only one feeling "CHEESE!!"
Not even worth $5 for the bride, she should've hired someone else who actually evoked real emotions rather than used a prime to get poorly composed fake smile-for-cam ones.

Thanks for taking the time to feedback. First up this was a gay wedding so no bride or bridesmaids. There are the more typical ceremony shots but they are what they are, I was looking for feedback on the candid shots hence why I posted them.

I really take your point about the simplicity of the images. To be honest that is what I have been striving for, clean subject, no distractions, good expression. Perhaps I have taken it too far.

So next job, a more complex composition, wider shots, more going on. More to engage with.
