how are these two p6s working? I took mine to be adjusted but it still overlaps frames...
>>
>>2856426

P6 (chromed primotar lens) one was my first MF camera. it has trouble sometimes with the frame counter. also variable interframe space, but never overlapped anything. cant bulb.

P6 TL works perfectly.

hmm, maybe I'm loading the film in a wrong way. usually the first shots are spaced wrongly, the last ones are not. basically the space between frames gets larger towards the end of the film.

But I disagree that he needs a better one.
Can't think of many sound decision making processes that start with wanting to sacrifice some of the mju's portability for an increase in IQ, and end with leaving the Rollei at home in favour of shooting another 35mm camera that's heavier and slower to use with a worse lense.

all my cameras work great, but there is something in that C220 that feels reliable as fuck, like its not just a camera, but a precision instrument you know its gonna deliver everytime. i havent given it as much use as i should.

pic related, 80mm blue dot+expired superia 100+fill flash.

*the russian meme will give you heaps swirly bokeh and a somewhat artsy look, but if you want clinical sharpness (eg. documentary) and reliability, you wont find it there.

All OM lenses have aperture preview tabs built into them.
They're the little crosshatched silver rectangles sticking out of the lense near the base.
When you're actually using a camera the lense is designed for, you just set the aperture on the aperture ring, and it stops down automatically at the moment of exposure.
>also, OM20 is based, small and easy to use with one of the best metering systems in any camera

So what was the point of that system anyways?
>>
>>2858295
Do you really know nothing about how SLR cameras work?

Most SLR cameras have this system. The aperture is kept open all the time to allow for a brighter viewfinder and easier focusing. When the shutter is triggered, a small lever stops down the lens to the selected aperture at the time of the exposure, like mentioned above.

If we didn't have this system, the view through the vf would be dim and it would be impossible to fine tune focus at smaller apertures.

The camera reads the incoming light as an EV value and then calculates settings to give you 18% gray, based on what is being metered. (Most meters see light only as tones between white and black)
>>
>>2858189
I like it so much that I've barely shot anything else since I bought it. It's a solid 6x6 SLR but it is a bit heavy.
>>
>>2858299
Makes sense, cheers!

I started on DSLRs so I'm still a bit dim when it comes to SLRs, but I'm learning a bit more and more :>

nice cameras. how do you like the oly 35 SP?
>>
>>2858871
It's a great camera. I really like how it handles, in its case the size and weight are just right. Spot metering and full auto come in handy once in a while. The best thing about it though is definitely the excellent lens.

Meh things: The finder's not amazing but good enough (a good size if you wear glasses). The aperture ring is a bit fiddly, and of course the fact that the light meter is on the upper left corner of the body is a bit inconvenient when using filters.
>>
>>2858943

have you compared it to the smaller RC?
>>
>>2858958
Never had an RC (though I'm planning to get one if I find one at a good price).
I did have RD though, which is just a little bit bigger than the RC. I kept the SP because the lens was better (the RD's was still very good though), and because its metering still works in manual mode.
>>
>>2858421
DSLRS actually work in the same way. The lenses stay wide open until you press the shutter (unless you're using an all manual lens). That's why a lot of cameras have a DOF preview button.

Serious question: should I get a medium format camera for shits? I like the look of mf, but since I'm an all digital fag who hasn't shot film since he was 16, I have no idea how to do the whole scanning / developing thing nowadays. Time for me is somewhat at a premium, so should I even bother? I found some good hasselblads on ebay and was thinking about it, for landscapes and such, but if it's become a huge time sink i'm not sure I care to do it, since i have a working system already
>>
>>2860804
i forgot to add that the last film i shot was in 2003, and i didn't even have a personal computer at the time. so all i knew was to go to the local pharmacy or whatever and fork over whatever godless amount of money they asked for to develop, and then the colors were always shit, or there were basic things like horizons i needed to fix, etc.

granted, i was 16, so i was hardly any good, but still. if i had to buy a $5k scanner to even get my pics onto my computer, why bother when I could get 3 70-200/2.8IIs?
>>
>>2860806

I'm considering buying an F3, an F100, or an F5 some time. Got any advice/recommendations for buying?
>>
>>2861363
They're all excellent cameras. The F5 is a big heavy fucking boat anchor of a camera though, and it has no real advantages over an F100 so I would pick an F100 over it personally. You can buy a vertical grip for the F100 too if you really want to have that option.

Also it's my personal objective opinion that the F3 is the best camera ever made. If you want manual focus, then you can't really go wrong with one.

>I've got my eye on getting a Bronica SQ system
You don't need ot get the SQ, Bronica's got other great cameras too, like the GS-1 or the EC-TL which has TTL metering built into the body and accepts the old S2 lenses meaning you can use the medium format Nikkors
>>
>>2861624
I kind of want 6x6 though, so the SQ is looking pretty appealing and it's dirt cheap too. I do wish it had metering with the waistlevel finder, though.

>>2861614
I managed to get good deals on all of them, too. The F100 was KEH BGN condition because the grip was sticky, but it cleaned up nicely. The F3 was also BGN because some idiot had colored in the white text with a sharpie, I had to repaint it. It has a little bit of brassing too, but it looks pretty good. The FA has messed up shutter curtains, but it still manages to work perfectly.

>>2861612
I fell for it.
>>
>>2861651
The EC-TL is 6x6, and besides having in-body metering it can go up to 1/1000sec, the SQ can only do 1/500
>>
>>2860669
Neither did I...Heh.

My battery door does the exact same fucking thing, it won't stay closed.

Damn and to think it's been sitting in a bin in our closet for months. Maybe I'll grab some 35mm and see what this little thing can do.

You and me both! I think it's the best bang for your buck 6x6 camera out there.

>>2861651
Not having the metering isn't a huge deal. Lighting conditions don't change that quickly 95% of the time. I usually meter as soon as I go out. Once in direct sun, once in shade. I keep both settings in mind and adjust as I see fit. The SQ-A is killer and a workhorse. I've been abusing mine for 10 years (seriously, I don't treat it nicely at all) without a hiccup.

Old pic, Mamiya 6 is gone.

why ditch the Mamiya 6? I've always wanted one. What's it like?
>>

>why ditch the Mamiya 6?
To put it simply, I learned I don't enjoy rangefinders.

>What's it like?
It's a fantastic camera. I had it for 4 years. Took it on roadtrips, overnight camping trips, Vietnam, and Europe. Never let me down. Optics are stellar and the ergonomics are great. Weight-wise, it weighs about the same as the SQ-A but the 6's lenses are much smaller which made traveling with it a bit easier. That said I travel with my Bronica extensively too.

>I've always wanted one.
If you're down with rangefinders and want to shoot 6x6 you'll absolutely love it.
>>
>>2861403
I've been leaning towards the F3 because of how much people praise it on this board. Got any particular lens recommendations? It's really hard to find any consistent and concrete recommendations by googling.

I have a Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8 for my FM. If I get another Nikon I was going to go for either a 35mm or 85mm lens.
>>
>>2861858
I'm not a fan of 35mm and I haven't tried any manual focus 85mm lenses. The 28mm f/2.8 AI-s and any of the 105mm f/2.5 lenses are both really good, though. Those two are probably some of the most highly regarded Nikon AI lenses. But I would choose lenses based on what focal length you want rather than which ones are supposed to be the best, a really sharp 28mm lens won't do you much good if what you really wanted was a 35mm.

The market on ebay is really fucked right now. Stuff is getting totally overpriced and people try to sell their shitty and faulty cameras for a fortune. If you read something like "i have not been abled to test the camera" but the guy sells nothing but cameras, you can almost be shure you're getting a brick.
I would only buy at trusted sellers that take the stuff back if you are not happy.

I just found Nikomat/Nikkormat FT3 at home. Apparently my father found it in the backseat of his taxi back in 1978. You need to focus on the leading edge of the camera, and sharpen in post.
You need the get the damned thing straight.
You need the get the taking camera a little lower and straighter, and rotate the camera a little anticlockwise.
You need to tame your light a little bit, it's coming off the chrome a little hot, the change in angle might just be enough to acheive this.
Also, you need to fill the shadow side with whiter light, so it's not just the muddy orange reflecting off your background. You might just be able to bouce off a white card just outside the frame, or you may need to add another light.
>>
>>2865932
Congrats! I find it easiest to just carry in the palm of my hand. Post some examples once you get them back! What do you have loaded at the moment?

Few tips:
>I wouldn't shoot below 1/60th without using mirror lock-up.
>Use the flip-up magnifier to make sure you nail focus
>Try not to let direct sun hit the darkslide slot when the darkslide is out too much.

Is that any better? I still have some issues avoiding overexposure on the chrome, I currently have very limited space in my apartment so I can't move the light as freely as I would like to.

Also tried to get the reflector as close as possible to the right to get as much light as possible on that side.

Thanks for you advice.

Thanks anon. I shot a few rolls of Tri-X I had laying around from the last time I tried shooting 120 a few years ago. I'm pretty disappointed that Fuji Acros 100 seems to be discontinued in 120 size or on its way out, that's my favorite film. I want to buy a few rolls of slower film next to see how finer grain looks.

I'm kind of annoyed that KEH sold me a PS/B lens instead of a regular PS, but it's in such good condition that I think I'll keep it anyway. It seems like it's supposedly pretty much the same as the regular PS, just without the T shutter setting which I probably wouldn't need very often anyway. I guess I can just chain together a bunch of 8 second exposures if I ever want a really long exposure.

Try to find an old enlarger somewhere and set up a little darkroom, it's way more fun than fucking around with tedious scanners. It's neat to process film without any computers and end up with a physical photo, too.

Did you request a regular PS and get a PS/B? That T-mode is one of my favorite things about the SQ-A. I use it all the time at night. If they did a switchero on you'd I'd give them a call and get a normal PS instead. Stacking 8s exposures will most likely not work since you'll most likely bump the camera a tiny bit when refiring.

As far as I know Acros isn't discontinued in 120. It's still very easy to get over here in Japan at least.
>>
>>2866406
Also, that camera looks mint! KEH BGN is the bomb.

I didn't know an SQ-A could look like that. Mine is a battered old hag who smokes a pack a day but refuses to die.

So what were the last great SLRs produced (preferably by Canon & Nikon) that had the most modern features packed in. Good autofocus, accurate metering, auto exposure modes that actually work well etc?

I ask because I know that if I picked up something really vintage like an FTb or something 90* of my shots would be wasted terribly exposed shots that would be straight money down the drain.
>>
>>2867726
No. FE2 is trash.
>>
>>2867735
>I ask because I know that if I picked up something really vintage like an FTb or something 90* of my shots would be wasted terribly exposed shots that would be straight money down the drain.
There's only really the 1V. I also hate to tell you that despite what you think about your shots being horribly exposed. You eyeballing it with Sunny 16 or using the internal lightmeter will get you a lot further than this "pro" camera.

Don't be retarded, learn to focus. Know when to stop down and keep to a shutter speed higher than your focal length when handholding and you really can't go wrong.

Or buy a 1V and have it break on you. Because they're really, really unreliable. Most of the other EOS EF film bodies were decent, tho like every other film camera they lacked AF points.
>>
>>2867763
Really? why?

Could you recommend me a camera then?

Thanks!
>>
>>2867735
For cheap: Nikon F100, Canon EOS 1n or maybe 1v

If you want the very best final swansong of the 35mm SLR: Nikon F6 or FM3a

All of those except the FM3a are basically just early 2000s professional-tier DSLRs except with 35mm film instead of CF cards.
>>
>>2867769
muh electronic shutter. Nikon FM2 of FM3 will be your best friends.

>>

>>
>>2867778
Electronic shutters are literally superior to mechanical ones in all ways except for the fact that you have to buy a tiny little commonly available battery like once a year. Don't fall for the mechanical meme, the FE and FA and F3 and all those others are excellent cameras too. Mechanical shutters have to be serviced every once in a while to keep running accurately, an electronic shutter is basically going to work perfectly until the day it breaks.

if you want to shoot both, try a 35mm.
50mm would be better to street, but awful to landscape.
24/28 would be perfect to landscape, but to wide for street.

35mm sits nicely between them.

I just need to buy an SD card and I know there are different categories for write speed but I don't know where dSLRs specify the mininum required to not bottleneck their max fps

unless it's just multipling the size of the RAW by the fps but i could easily expect that the calculation is not that simple.

Also, the camera on the far right with the red ring around the lens is a panorama camera.
It only fills 1 shot of a 35mm though, so the quality is poor because it's just a thin, tiny image but it seems really cool to shoot with.

Thoughts on the Minox?

Theres one at my local shop for 50$ but I'm worried it would be awkward to use.
>>
>>2871491
The controls are a bit fiddly, but the camera's really fun and cute. I'm always surprised at how small the thing is when the lens door is closed.
I got the camera with the box, packaging, eveready case etc. for €1,50 in an eBay auction (probably because there was no mention of it working) and for that price it's obviously great, but I'm not sure I would pay $50.
The controls you can get used to, but the biggest issue is reliability. A lot has been written about this online, some have never had any issues, some have had every minox 35 they owned fail multiple times. I had to fix mine when it arrived, and again a few weeks later. It dies completely without warning. If you pay attention, you can hear and feel the shutter doesn't fire properly, but I can imagine shooting away half a roll of film not knowing it's broken.
If you can, make sure the one in the store is working perfectly, test it with full batteries and fire the shutter a bunch of times.

Personally I would instead recommend an Olympus XA. It's a tiny little bit bigger than a closed Minox, but the clamshell design is superior to the flimsy door, it has a reliable reputation, the finder is better, it has a decent rangefinder and it has, surprisingly for its size, truly excellent controls.
It doesn't have full auto like some of the later Minox 35 series though and the lens doesn't have the same magic reputation as that of the Minox, but in my experience its every bit as good.
I got it similarly cheap as the Minox, but I would've gladly paid €50 or more for it. It's probably my favorite film camera, and the one I take with me most often.

Nah, its a lot more subdued, but I like the how it can be crisp at times and also a nice DoF that not as gimmicky. The other lens I have for it is the Flektagon 50mm, which is really nice too.

Its a Dominar-Anastigmat from the 20's I think, the shutter only works at 1/100, but I just use my hands as a shutter for multiple second-long exposures
