I know there have been a thousand threads about Trump rallies and protests, but I went out to one in San Diego and figured I might as well post my photos here too. Before I write anything else though, I'm aware this is /p/ and people on here are assholes, so rather than just saying photos are shit, let's be constructive. I'm not a photojournalist so this kind of photography is foreign to me. And I'm not a fan of the low saturation, low contrast, high noise images, so I'm sorry if that's what you like, this is not that. If you like them, good, if not just be constructive is all I'm saying.

Okay, so I will try to post these in chronological order, the best my memory will allow, and I will also just write a small snippet about the photo to give a little bit of the story of what's going on.

This first photo is not early on in the protests, just a good hook image.

This was taken right after I was leaving the rally inside the convention center. The police had arrested a protester that threw something at them. They advanced the line to grab the protester, and this is when they were retreating after the arrest was completed

This guy with the "Don't Tread on Me" flag had just arrived at the protest and was trying to move into the "Trump Protesters Free Speech Area" (It's fucking stupid that they have a free speech area). The police stopped him and informed him that he was allowed to have the flag, but the flag pole could not be brought into the area, probably because it could be used as a weapon. Here in the photo, the police man is trying to cut the flag from the pole, but he was unable to, so the flag guy just stayed out in the nearby street

I took quite a few photos of this guy. The white guy with the bald head and beard was a pro-trump protester. He was making some pretty inflammatory statements to get people fired up. It worked pretty well, within minutes of being there, he had 30 people surrounding him, and a lot of them were media.

The irony of some of the protesters is pretty hilarious. They preach acceptance and yell how hateful Trump is. In this photo, that guy was holding a sign that read "Trump=Hate" while they were blaring a song titled "Fuck Donald Trump" while they flipped off the trump supporters. I'll also talk about the multiple Trump supporters that were assaulted during the "peaceful" protests

These people came in what seemed to be a large parade float down the street. It was bizarre because they weren't really protesting Trump, they were a bunch of Maids, like hotel maids and stuff, talking about raising the wage? I wasn't quite sure because their signs read "Stop the rape". These women were dressed up like butterflies which I can only assume is a reference to migrating Monarch butterflies. These protesters were well organized and peaceful, but lacked any sort of visible message.

The line to get into the rally was massive, stretching close to a quarter mile long, possibly longer. I got in line an hour before the rally was scheduled to start, and it took about a half hour to get in. Online it said that cameras with interchangeable lenses were not allowed into the event, even the security monitoring the lines said that I might not be able to get in ( I had an a7r with a canon 24-70 and a a6300 with a stock lens). As I got into the convention center there were about 20 lines for metal detectors and secret service/police searching bags. I got up to the front, and they just made sure that the lens was a real operating lens. They just turned the camera on and checked it out, I was informed that there were hollowed out lenses people would store guns inside, and that's why they don't like people having large lenses in the event. But I was able to get in no problem with a relatively large lens

Why is it that non bernouts, or at least bernouts that can restrain their emotion in the political sphere, take objectively better pictures?

These people were standing in front of me, I thought they didn't fit in, seeing as the women had short dyke haircuts. But I figured who cares, they probably just don't fit the mold. But of course half way into the rally, she rips her Trump shirt off, then PUNCHES a veteran in the head, but Secret Service picked her up in less than 5 seconds. I'm not even exagerating, they already could tell she was a protester and secret service was scattered through the crowd near people that were possible protesters. She got taken away, I don't think they got charged with anything, because some other protesters actually took their shirts of (they were women) and I saw them outside of the even smiling. I'll post a picture of them later

Not sure. I feel like they've fallen into the trap of "modern photography". Where they feel like you don't need the subject in focus, no composition, and bad exposure. I saw in another thread, a photographer that took photos at a Trump rally defend his photos being out of focus by saying something like "It's a statement on Trumps candidacy in general. No focus and no direction in his policies, so I took an out of focus picture". Not sure why they take those kind of photos. Of course I'm always down for some CC, as long as it truly is constructive and based in reality.

>>2852527
Of course, I had to take a photo of trump speaking. Because I got there 30 minutes before he spoke, I wasn't as close as I would've liked. I was still able to sneak through pretty close, until people started getting upset at me cutting in front of them. I have this photo in color too, it's hard to decide which I like better

Yeah absolutely. I used manual focus for the entire time I was taking photos at the rally. I usually keep my focus peaking on low or medium depending on the situation, with a red highlight, and I use the zebras as well. Because I was shooting in a hectic environment, you'll notice most of my photos are f 4.5, just because I didn't want to miss a shot with missed focus. I think the dof is still reasonable for most of these photos.

>>2852537
I left the rally a bit early to make sure I got some of the protests outside. I had to leave early because I was going out of town, and I just wanted to get more protesters. As soon as I got outside, I noticed the scene was a lot different. Now there were hundreds of police, with "less lethal" guns, mace paintball guns, knight sticks, etc.

One of the biggest things I noticed was that not a single protester carried a US flag, it was all Mexican flags, or anti-fascism flags. This is quite upsetting considering these people are the same ones burning US flags and yelling racist at all the Patriots. These protesters were some of the worst individuals I've seen in my life

I witnessed a protester smash their skateboard over a Trump supporters head twice as the police were escourting him away from the angry crowds. I didn't get a good picture, it was out of focus because I couldn't see them over the massive crowd. But I did get a shot of some blood that came from another Trump supporter getting assaulted

I went to see Trump speak a the NRA-ILA conference. There were ZERO disruptions likely because: (1) it was a pay event; (2) you had to be a NRA member; and (3) outside the speaking area most people were armed. ( I took the picture with my cell phone).

Near where the police were guarding the convention center, the protesters started assaulting the police, full on punching them, because a protester was getting arrested. I'm not sure what initiated the arrest, but this was the aftermath of the police getting hit by the peaceful protesters.

Thank you! I processed all of these in Adobe Camera Raw. For the color photos I usually slide the highlights almost all the way down, shadows all the way up, then I adjust the black and white points to the point where they almost clip. After that I will adjust clarity and bump up the vibrancy and saturation to my liking. Any other adjustments are on a per-photo basis depending on the colors. I will also add a radial adjustment to lower exposure and create a vignette like effect to draw the eye to a certain spot in the photo. If you'd like I can post a screenshot of the settings I used for one of my photos?

>>2852581
This is one of the last photos I'll post, that are my favorites, I will post more photos if it's requested.

This photo was taken as another protester was getting arrested. The crowd was getting heated and started throwing things at the officers, mostly just bottles and stuff. The guy that got arrested was hauled away very quickly.

Here's a screenshot of one of the photos in this thread. Like I said, this type of processing works better for color photos, B&W photos will lose a lot of contrast using this method, so I don't use it for B&W. But the order I do the processing in is this

1. Turn on highlight and shadow clipping warning
2. Bring highlights all the way down, shadow all the way up
3. Adjust the white and black point to get the image close to clipping or to your satisfaction.
4. Adjust Clarity
5. Adjust vibrance and saturation
6. Make small adjustments to highlights and shadows as I might see fit.

Sometimes bringing the shadows and highlights all the way to one side will give an odd look, so I will tone it down sometimes, just like in the screenshot here.

For B&W I know I'll get hate on here, but I love to abuse the clarity slider even harder. In this photo, I also used a radial adjusment to add a vignette. It was a very squished "oval" shape to vignette around both men

Criticism? Dude, with all due respect for journalistic standards in general, your work is more something to learn from than to criticise or improve. The commentary/filenames add an extra layer to the images, further increasing their journalistic value. By all means, post more of your photos from the rally and throw in that wide angle police shot, I'm curious to know what falls under your definition of shitty.

Yeah, I understand. I guess I was thinking even criticism along the lines of processing the images would be welcome too. I tried my best not to over-do the processing.

Here is the wide of the police, it's just a snapshit I just wanted to show a few people how large the police presence was at this event. I couldn't even capture the entire group of police. They were lining the entire road leading up to this point, guarding the Trump supporters from the protesters

Here's another shot of the protesters in the "free speech zone", a designated area for them to protest in. Like I mentioned before, the protesters only had Mexican flags or Anti-Fascism flags, there was not a US flag to be seen, except for the few Trump supporters that would wander into that area

This group of protesters were more organized than any of the other groups there, however, their protest was a bit confusing for me. Rather than protesting a political figure, they were protesting something about janitors. I assume they were talking about wages with maids and janitor services, but their message was lost to me when I read the sign saying "Stop the Rape"

Here's one more of the pro-Trump protester that was there purely for the purpose of agitating protesters. He seemed like he knew what he was doing, because he had the words "holy" and "Bible" Written out in big block letters on his bible to play it up for the camera, and some had mentioned that he was also protesting up in the LA area, so he might be doing this professionally some how. In this photo, another photojournalist couldn't handle it and got into the protest herself.

There were three young black kids, who I can only assume were brothers, standing by themselves in the crowd of protesters. Each one of them had signs criticizing Trump in some way.

>trying to stay neutral
You didn't succeed though.

Otherwise I think these are pretty good photos in the documentary/reportage sense. The ones in which you tried to be a bit more artistic don't really work in my opinion; perhaps you should stick to your strengths. The color processing to me is a bit oversaturated, but that's a subjective stylistic opinion I guess.

As someone from a country where the national flag is quite strictly only displayed on flag days, and displaying it otherwise gets you labelled as an extreme right winger or nazi pretty quickly, this looks extremely weird and silly. I mean that's clearly overdone as a joke anyway, but still.
>>
>>2853370
>You didn't succeed though.
True, but in the photographic sense, I did stay neutral, I didn't depict one side to be worse than the other for the most part. I think only my commentary here would lead you to believe I am a Trump supporter.

Just curious. Can you pick out the ones that you mention me trying to be more artistic, and didn't work out? I'd just like to know which ones those are.

>The color processing to me is a bit oversaturated
I can completely understand, here on /p/ it seems the general consensus is more muted colors, so I know that the color ones probably won't be ass appreciated.

And yeah, the people that wear American flags are more just trying to prove a point. I'd say it's pretty rare to come across someone wearing anything close to that here in the US

That's all these protests are. It's turned into such a mess that people go there expecting a riot, expecting violence, and expecting crazy people. And they end up getting sucked into it themselves.

The odd thing about the protesters in that photo is that they were un-related to a political protest. They were protesting for higher wages, which then devolved into people bringing over Trump pinatas and smashing them.

Pic unrelated, just another photo from that day

No, they were actually taking them inside the convention center. I know they were arrested, but I don't know if they were always charged. I did witness the protesters actually assaulting the police, so I assume they were charged severely in that case.

>What are you implying, that if you're not a trump supporter you're automatically unpatriotic?

No, I'm simply implying that by burning the US flag you aren't patriotic. Don't inject your insecurities.

>Does that gun say less lethal?
Yeah, it does. I'm not sure what that meant. I assume it's some sort of bean bag gun or shot rubber bullets. And I'm also sure it's to keep people from stampeding

>Oh so that's the reason he was upset?

I'm just telling you what he told KTLA, he said that the trump supporter "bumped his sign into him" so they jumped him and shredded his sign. I'm not making that up

>Anyways this whole thread is just you doing exactly what the bald guy is doing

Maybe. But I did nothing but show what happened there. And I thought I was pretty fair in my descriptions too. I acknowledged that the Trump supporters that got assaulted were baiting the protesters to do it, and I also showed the negativity of the protesters. What else could I have done to make it more swayed to your political agenda other than not show up?

I don't want this to devolve into a political debate, I get enough of that on /pol/, I just want to talk photos, if possible

The only thing about the free speech area is the name. Free speech is a right but I'm most cities in order to not get fucked as a protest they need to tell the city where they're going to be organizing. That's the reason those crazy Baptist church people won that court case against the dad who who claimed mental distress against them, they told the city where they would be protesting
>>
>>2853739
The funny thing about the free speech areas though, is that it's almost the opposite of that. At this even they had two free speech areas set up. One pro trump, one anti trump. But you couldn't be in the pro trump area and be anti trump, just like you couldn't be in the anti trump area and be pro trump. So it's more like an echo chamber area. The Neutral area around the free speech zones, were where all the fights were breaking out

OP, I didn't want to get involved in this but reading the comments about your bias or lack of thereof I feel I need to step in.

As an absolute outsider, an European completely detached from your election madness and social/political groups and outlooks, I got absolutely no pro-trump bias from your photos, nor, I must stress this, narrative. I saw the typical white trash/crazy fundies Trump supporters and the token extreme leftist SJW protesters, both sides portrayed for what they are, nothing more, nothing less.

The accusations for your trump bias seem to come from people taking offense in the truthful portrayal of the protesters and their actions as showing them in a bad light, unfavourable if you're against trump etc. So basically more frothing leftists being buttmad. I think it's important to state this because you did an excellent job showing the rally in all its aspects and as an outsider I found your perspective and shots very interesting and captivating - informational, even. It'd be a shame if you got yelled over and wrongfully accused by someone as biased as the bias they're accusing you of. And I, personally, would most want to see Sanders elected and think the worst of Trump and anything surrounding him. Yet I still see the anti-trump protesters as the insane mob they are.

You're not as detached as you might think. Our economic debate might be a bit more right winged than yours, but you have essentially the same social conflict going on in Europe. The west is in this together.

I'd argue that Trump's popularity largely comes from his behavior more than his policies. His self-funding allows him to rock the boat when it comes to the politically correct establishment, which is certainly a problem in Europe, too.

Fair enough, I really do appreciate the honest criticism. Yeah I know I have photos of people on their phones. But when I'm trapped in a sea of people, I'm kind of limited with my surroundings. And I also thought the two photos were varied enough to justify posting both.

Yeah, pretty confusing when these people are worshiping the flag of another country while burning the American flag.

So they're burning the American flag to protest what it stands for? What about having a political rally is a negative thing for what this country stands for? Are they protesting the fact that we have a right to choose our president? Are they protesting freedom of speech? What is it exactly?

These people don't love the country, when they aren't even from this country, burn our flag, fly the mexican flag, assault the police, then say "Make America Mexico Again" pretty sure that's not showing love.

So I guess I just don't see your side, would you like to explain??

The black guy was saying he was muslim and basically saying that it was offensive. Obviously, both were using foul language, but that is basically what was happening.

I'll give OP credit, compared to the other threads that only show nitpicked trump supporters from leftist photographers, this at least shows and equal balance of the anti-trump and the pro-trump people. Oh yeah I absolutely support Trump. But did I show either side in a better light than another? You can be mad that Trump protesters are violent and destroying stuff, but that is the reality of the situation. Do you want me to lie and say all those people burning American flags are Trump supporters? Or the ones assaulting police are Trump supporters? How would you like me to skew the information next time?
>>
>>2857311
So at no point during the entire thing did any single Trump supporter step on a single piece of landscaping, or say or do anything remotely inflammatory? Did the protesters have any other space to stand in where they would have been just as out of the way? Or did they come there and stomp that planter as an act of rebellion?

What you shoot is important, but what you choose not to shoot is also important. It's 2016. Literally everyone in America understands the concept of lies of omission, and the ubiquity of bias, and your descriptions of the events shows us that we can't really trust your representation of the whole story.

Exactly. One single person, part of one very small group of people. A group of people from a demographic that stands to lose a LOT if your boy gets elected. People going to a rally made up almost entirely of "patriots" (read: mostly racists) who are trying to get Trump elected.

How many thousands of people were there? How many protesters DIDN'T do anything, or were totally respectful and didn't destroy anything? How many of Trump's supporters had hateful signs and t-shirts that would have explained WHY some Hispanic people might feel the need to come and protest the gathering?
>>
>>2857338
Racists? Why are they automatically racists for supporting Trump?

>A group of people from a demographic that stands to lose a LOT if your boy gets elected

What demographic is that? The illegal demographic? Trump is going to help legal citizens, that's what they don't understand. Who's jobs do you think the illegal mexicans are taking? The white engineers jobs? Or the high school diploma holder that wouldn't mind doing some manual labor? Jokes on you man, the democrats are shipping millions of illegals in to take the non-college educated mans job, which a lot of times means minorities. You just don't understand that the democrats (the ones that owned slaves) are up to the same shit they're always up to, getting cheap labor and more slaves. If you didn't know, the republicans are the ones that freed the slaves and pushed for the civil rights acts of the 1960's. Right now, they're trying to protect americans, which means making sure illegals are taking your tax dollars.

>How many protesters DIDN'T do anything, or were totally respectful and didn't destroy anything

I'm sure there were a good amount of protesters that didn't do anything, just like I showed in my pictures there were peaceful protesters. But the fact is that the only people destroying stuff were in fact the protesters. Uhh, and there were 0 trump supporters that had hateful signs. They didn't even have signs. The protesters had signs reading "fuck trump" "Trump is Hitler" "Make America Mexico again" I think the worst sign I saw there from a Trump supporter said "The only white privledge is sunburn"

It's true

http://cis.org/2.5-Million-Join-Illegal-Population-under-Obama

And your tax dollars give them free college, your tax dollars give them welfare, your tax dollars pay for them in prison.

There are more illegal immigrants on welfare than American families. How is that right? And now they want to give them the right to vote on elections here in the US. It's insanity. Imagine this scenario.

A white man and his family run down to Mexico, start taking tax dollars to programs even mexican citizens can't afford, the white family then wants to participate in the elections for a country they don't even belong to, then start burning the mexican flags, calling the mexicans racist for the mexicans getting mad at the white family. It's not right
>>
>>2857353
I can't tell if you believe me or not but it's true. What's the biggest benefit of letting people in the country that will work for $3 an hour? It's the labor, and it's not much different than slavery in the early US, because we don't have to feed, house or cloth the immigrants now, just give them a few bucks.

Or are you not believing the democrats are the ones that owned the slaves?

Welfare
The U.S. Social Security Administration estimated that in 2013 undocumented immigrants—and their employers—paid $13 billion in payroll taxes alone for benefits they will never get. They can receive schooling and emergency medical care, but not welfare or food stamps.

http://www.tolerance.org/immigration-myths

>[Illegal immigants] Collectively, they paid an estimated $10.6 billion to state and local taxes in 2010, according to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP), a research organization that works on tax policy issues.

>Undocumented immigrants do not qualify for welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, and most other public benefits. Most of these programs require proof of legal immigration status and under the 1996 welfare law, even legal immigrants cannot receive these benefits until they have been in the United States for more than five years.

That's really weird because the Center for Immigration Studies, found it to be a different case

http://cis.org/Welfare-Use-Legal-Illegal-Immigrant-Households

>they paid an estimated $10.6 billion

There are estimated to be over 11million undocumented immigrants in the US. Which means they paid about $900 per year in total taxes. I'm sorry but what taxes could they possibly be paying? Sales tax? They DO qualify for welfare, they receive welfare at a much higher rate than natives do.

In California ALONE, it costs $2,370 per home to pay for the small group of illegals to stay in the US, that's a huge tax burden for the entire state.

>>
>>2857418
No, my dad actually likes immigrants, he pays them to pick weeds in our yard all day.

Okay and so all your sources show that the republicans played a huge part in the civil rights bills. So what's your point?
>>
>>2857424
What's YOUR point? The links show that it wasn't a partisan issue at all, and that, it was a North South issue almost exclusively, regardless of party.
>>
>>2857429
Which shows that your dream world of the republicans and democrats magically switching places 100 years ago is false. It's been a flase narative constructed by liberals to deny the fact that their party is the same one that started the KKK, held slaves, and fought against the north in the civil war. That's all.

Look, I think immigrants are good. I think it needs to be an easier process for immigrants to enter the US. But we cannot have illegals using tax dollars, and unknown people entering the US. We need to screen them, and then they can enter. Wouldn't this be better for everyone? They won't have to work for $3 an hour, and they can pay taxes. Right now, it's just not beneficial for Americans

Yeah, I think it's safe to say, a lot of these protesters cannot fathom the levels of hypocracy and idocy they show at these protests.

Trump says the a lot of the illegals are violent criminals. They get mad that he would make such a statement, so what do they do? The illegals start assaulting police and Trump supporters. I never went to college, started a career, have been promoted six times in nine years, have no debt, two houses, and work about 25 hours a week. I'm not jealous. I just take my free time to actually verify the "infuriating facts" that are presented to me, and find that most of them are at least partially false, and are presented specifically to elicit a reaction and an emotion from me, and then I use the actual facts to make an informed decision.

for instance, many sources suggest that the amount of illegal immigrants in the US has been relatively stable for about five years now. They also suggest that whole some illegals work low wage jobs under the table making less than minimum wage generally, many others work legitimate jobs, and therefore pay taxes and contribute like normal citizens, while not being able to draw on welfare programs like the unemployed Americans they're out-working.

Yes, immigration is a real issue, but it's not anywhere near the biggest issue of the country, and building a platform around "the scary foreigners who are ruining this country" is fear mongering and misinformation at it's basest form.

>>
>>2864903
You don't know the real definition of hate. The Americans have been so coddled over the decades you think "HATE" means wanting the best for your country.

What do you think would happen if you went down to the border, cut a hole in it, walk into Juarez, have multiple kids, live off the mexican welfare system, burn the mexican flag, fly the american flag, call the mexicans racist, then tell them to make Mexico into America? You think you'd walk away alive? Hell no.

Do you even realize Mexico is having an immigration crisis too? They have illegals flooding in from central America, so much that they are on the verge of an economic crisis trying to take care of the illegals, so you know what they do? THEY SHIP THEM TO THE US, they are bringing them by the bus load into the US. The government knows this, and is working with contractors in the US to ship the illegals from the Mexican border to distribution points around the US.

If you don't see the problem with this, you are beyond reason. There is no reason it should be like this, and you can't even face the facts without calling people "Hateful, racist, xenophobes".

If you think that ISIS isn't taking full advantage of this you're even more dumb. They have said they will, they say they will kill us, and they are in the process of doing it as we speak. But you can't even admit there is such thing as radical Islam because your mind has been so absurdly subverted, that you can't even take basic facts at face value.

You better come back to reality, because it'll catch up to all of us real quick.

Oh, did he just pump lead into 100 gay people just then? Better call the FBI another shooter is on the loose!

>implying anybody from /p/ would actually go out and shoot
If /p/ had any terrorists, they'd just spend their days on /k/ arguing about terrorism gear.

No, the humor is that this guy >>2864945
is saying it is literally as bad to say something mean as it is to kill in the name of ISIS. In what world is "being ignorant" as bad as murdering??

So redpilled, I can't even see a joke in what he's saying
