Take a moment to appreciate that you're not getting 300 replies from lying backstabbing asshole cunts who systematically shit up every thread you make because you they can't stand the thought of you being happy with what you do with your life.
Then remind yourself that you're "against bullying."

Sack of shit.

Relatively disappointed with the results. I felt totally out of my depth. Norway is amazing, though, and i'd encourage any of you to visit, despite how totally fucked i now am financially.

we didn't camp as much as we should have, either. mostly out of laziness (the stress of finding JUST the right spot and the daunting rigmarole of setting up was too often ditched in favour of comfort)

I'm going to bed soon but I'll answer questions when I see them.

I enjoyed this thread a lot. >you will never fall asleep with jamie's head on your chest, the two of you laying on a hammock on her parents' plantation, alabama glowbugs lighting up the June night sky. a frog croaks somewhere off in the distance. the night smells sweet and sticky and green. you can see the familiar arc of Scorpio through the Spanish Moss, and the brilliant white splash of our galaxy rises from your feet to overhead, Sagittarius cradled carefully within. she looks up at you and you can see the stars reflecting in her eyes, burning bright with that challenging wit that flummoxes you on Monday and beguiles you on Tuesday. she stretches up and gives you an electric kiss and she can feel your heart skip a beat. she's small and lithe in your arms, but she's small and lithe in that fierce, athletic, independent way that a cat is. she could cut you deep on a whim, but she won't, because she's yours and you're hers and the night is young and forever.

The fact that you decided to post these at what you mistakenly believe to be an ideal FB resolution meant that I didn't bother opening most of them, and the ones that I did mostly didn't fit on the screen, because I cbf opening them in separate tabs to see them downrezzed by firefox.

What I did see, however, was plenty of noisy and blurry photos, very few compelling compositions, and basic bitch vsco-tier colour processing.
My advice to you would be

Define "normal lens"
>>
>>2847534
A focal length equal to the diagonal of the recording medium (film, sensor, plate, etc)

On full frame, ~42-55 mm is the 'normal' range. Typically 50mm is referred to as a normal lens.
>>
>>2847538
(full frame digital or 35mm film, that is)

I prefer the term 'standard'. Normal feels weird to me. But they're interchangeable.
>>
>>2847538
>A focal length equal to the diagonal of the recording medium (film, sensor, plate, etc)
Why is this important
>>
>>2847541
>Why is this important
It would equate to one radian (57.3 degrees).
>>
>>2847551
>It would equate to one radian (57.3 degrees).
But how does this better my photos? How is this desirable from a purely photographic point of view? Shouldn't you just use a lens that is fitting for your scenario, instead of one that happens to equate to the diagonal of the sensor?
>>
>>2847554
>use a lens that is fitting for your scenario
You can use radians to calculate the FOV for any system in moments. It's pretty useful.

Forgot to mention it works like this:
Sensor or film size / focal lenth x 57.3 = FOV
>>
>>2847571
His editing is far better than yours. That looks washed out as fuck.
>>
>>2847555
>>2847559

I "calculate" FOV by looking through my viewfinder. Why would doing all that math have any beneficial affect on the quality of photos taken
>>
>>2847575
>looking through my viewfinder
In Astronomy you usually can't see anything through the viewfinder.

If an object is 1 degree in size and you are using a 200mm lens then:
1 x 200 / 57.3 = 3.49mm image on your sensor.

>all that math
I'm rubbish at maths but I've found this quite useful. I was going to photograph a ship that was due to pass by the next day. I knew the size of the ship, it's distance and the lenses I had so could be ready without messing about changing lenses.
>>
>>2847587
Because ships are known for passing by at about 140mph, and you don't have time to change lenses, right?

The focal lengths needed to shoot astro are all well documented by the thousands of other people who have done it before you, and on top of that, there's a pretty set rule for single bodies: Always get longer. But sure, if you're doing astronomy photos, maybe it's useful to you. Which photo in this thread applies to that?
>>
>>2847588
>passing by at about 140mph
No but I knew Icould only see it inbetween some cranes briefly.

>Which photo in this thread applies to that?
None, fair enough. Didn't mean to derail the thread. OP mentioned focal length equalling sensor/film diagonal that's all.
>>
>>2847591
>No but I knew Icould only see it inbetween some cranes briefly.
So you could have framed for the shot you had (between the cranes) and been totally at the ready, then, without having to do any math? Is that what you're saying?

If your point is only to get the boat itself, then go wherever the boat happens to be, and get the shot with whatever lens you have. Who cares. If your point is to get the boat in a scene, then frame the scene visually, and wait for the boat to show up. Literally millions of photographers do this shit every single day without even knowing what a radian is. Shit, even my spell-check things the word is a typo.
>>
>>2847593
>So you could have framed for the shot you had (between the cranes)
I wanted to visualize the scene before hand to see if it would work.

Mate you haven't got a fucking clue have you

>interest points gone ignored and left in the extreme 5% corners of a photo
The "interest points" are centre frame in the contrast between the dark vegetation and snow caps on the left and right and how they play with the centre peak

>or failing to balance your lines
What the fuck do you even mean here, this one is clearly to show the symmetry of the road and the river. There's a lot of headroom that doesn't support that sure but it's there and OP did the right thing by framing too high instead of too low because the scenery is much nicer looking than more road

>and center your central compositions
The composition here is the M shape forming in the reflection in the water and also in the peaks and sky in the top of the frame,

Are you literally autistic?
>>
>>2847704
This.
And not documentation as in journalism, no, documentation as in the kind of photos your mom sends you in text messages after she and your father arrive to their Cruise ship to show you that they've safely arrived and safely sailed.

The artistic merit is nearly non-existant in all but 2-3 of these, the ones with so much snow on the ground. If you believe that pointing a camera at a gap between fjords makes someone a competent photographer, then Instagram truly heralds the coming of everyone being a real landscape photographer.

https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/norwayfjords/

There are better photos taken in these locations every 5-10 minutes. This is really just all shit, guys.

>Same fagging this hard.
Bro, when nobody on the board is saying the word "documentation" for a week and a half, and then suddenly it's popping up in multiple threads where it doesn't belong, we all know it's you. Get over yourself. Travel photography is all technically documentation. All street, reportage, anything where you aren't literally building the whole image from scratch. Nobody cares, and stating that something is documentation isn't a condemnation to anyone but you.
>>
>>2847713
>The "interest points" are centre frame in the contrast between the dark vegetation and snow caps on the left and right and how they play with the centre peak
thats not an interest point, thats literally just the inherent photo youre going to take at a fjord.

photography is a detail-oriented craft. if you cant notice a waterfall in the frame and think "I should expose better for that detail" then you probably aren't very good at it.

>What the fuck do you even mean here, this one is clearly to show the symmetry of the road and the river.
And they're not symmetrically balanced, even though they look like they easily could have been. One terminates a corner, the other does not, and they do not meet centrally. There is no attention to detail.

>The composition here is the M shape forming in the reflection in the water and also in the peaks and sky in the top of the frame,
>The composition here is the M shape
lol okay then Im going to stay calling every boring oceanscape a well composed hyphen
>>
>>2847718

>>
>>2847721
I would bet that it isn't. Especially when "gorgeous landscapes and outdoor living is the same as shooting your food" fag isn't around.

Also, fun thought: If Charlie's goal was to take photos to document his fun trip, does calling them "documentation" act to insult the photos, or compliment them? Calling documentation an insult is like saying that "spicy" is always bad by virtue of being spicy.
>>
>>2847719
>thats literally just the inherent photo youre going to take at a fjord.
ok but OP is taking a picture of the fjord not at the fjord, that's why he excluded the piddly boring waterfall, that is blindingly obvious from the framing they chose. Changing the exposure in the bottom of the frame would just distract from the nicest part of the image.

>And they're not symmetrically balanced, even though they look like they easily could have been
I'm not sure how you're seeing that, the river ends on a corner and the road practically does. OP could have cropped but couldn't have moved much farther to the right because of the railing and riverbank. I think cropping would have taken away from it as a whole

>There is no attention to detail.
There is, plenty and enough, I think you're autistic and can't handle tiny things that make the images feel more natural and less clinical

>lol okay then Im going to stay calling every boring oceanscape a well composed hyphen

When photographers try to insult other photographers for shooting a particular environment, you know you're dealing in salt.

Colorburst refers to the 30-45 second period just before sunrise or just after sunset where the colors cast by the sun are most extreme. Think hot pink clouds at an angle to the sun.

Fucking moron. :^)
>>
>>2848438

Golden hour is the last hour while the sun is still up.

Blue hour is twilight before night.

"Colorburst" is the very short time in between.

>>
>>2848458

Go outside and watch the sunset today. Watch it critically. Don't get back in your car after it goes below the horizon.

Not knowing about stuff like this is where you really know someone doesn't really plan the hours of their shooting much.
>>
>>2848458
I've never seen it written about, only spoken about it with other photographers. Why, what are you having trouble with? Or are you some technician that doesn't really care about the light, or the idea of talking about it, but would prefer to argue about terminology and semantics?

The existence of the time of day is not really debatable, and in the terms of conversation, it's just been defined, so you should have no trouble using the information, nor talking about it, so the only reason to ask for reference would be... argumentative?
>>
>>2848461
>>2848462

"reputable term"
Nigga do you know how language works? Like, in the every day colloquial sense?

You use words as they come to your head to describe ideas and concepts. The transitory period between golden hour and blue hour is literally a burst of color. A colorburst. It is not an academic term, it is emotive and self-descriptive.

If you wanna comb over 20 year old literature written by the era's equivalent of Tony Northrup, then...anywhere where they talk about golden hour and blue hour. Since, y'know, it's generally implied you're shooting through the transition of light.

If you take a professional DSLR with you on "vacation", don't pretend you're just taking photos of your travels. It's pretty obvious you see yourself as a landscape photographer in some way.

So have some integrity towards what you're doing.

Hahaha jesus fucking christ, what must it be like to be you... All confidence, with absolutely no empathy or understanding...

How's the presidential race coming? Most of your competition has dropped out. Must be feeling pretty great right about now, no?

Charlie was excitedly talking about his upcoming norway adventure for months, and was very actively talking to norwegian photographers and talking about the photos he couldn't wait to take.

It's almost like you're his friend from the internet that cares more about defending his friend than about the artform this board is ostensibly about.

Charlie goes on "fun camping trips" all the time, usually to photogenic locations. If you go to Norway or Iceland and come back with mediocre photos, don't sit and pretend its because you weren't trying. Your equipment says you were.
>>
>>2848548
>So have some integrity towards what you're doing.

this. besides, its not something you plan, not something you put your clock to remind you something is about to happen. a real landscaper feels the urge to set it all up for that moment, in a compulsive manner.

you dont choose, you go there and you'll end making the most of your shots, alone or accompained, there is no half assing to it.

if this is not your case, then youre just a glorified soccer mom.

People keep throwing this around but the only people who look like this is isi and whoever is posting anon who must be in the same irc channel sulking like babies right now.

Do you always think everyone is out to get you when you're fucking wrong?

I mean, I have the camera and lenses for work... Why wouldn't I bring them to Norway?

Either way I have already said that I'm disappointed with the photos I managed to produce, so not sure why everyone is still debating that. Although pure landscape photography certainly was not my intent.

Anyway this thread will be dead very soon because the shitposters seem to be deliberately rushing it to bump limit, which is fine. I wish I could say it had been a pleasure, /p/. Maybe see you next time.

IRC - Internet Relay Chat - Relay - Receive and Pass On

You can't have your cake and eat it too. Whining about idle chit-chat, and about too much conversation. IRC is a place where at any given time almost everyone is afk and the program or tab is running in the background.

This is 4chan. You're not an adult. You're a little boy wearing an adult mask.
Get over it.

Could you do the same for colorburst please

of course not, it was "landscape with my car as a prop lol".

Sure
Colorburst - Color Burst - the property possessed by an object of producing different sensations on the eye as a result of the way the object reflects or emits light, an instance of breaking or splitting as a result of internal pressure or puncturing; an explosion - pic attached

No, Charlie would never do anything petty like start a thread anonymously with the explicit intent of namedropping himself and his friends.
>>
>>2848607
My experience tells me that people don't like trips. Every trip thread ends like this.
But hey, at least they get criticism, that's more that what you get on the RPT
>>
>>2848607
It's a rivalry between a clique and people that the clique has discarded of. Hypocrisy, samefagging, whiteknighting your friends, the whole culture of modern 4chan.

The meet-ups ruined the board and inflated a bunch of mediocre photographers egos because they finally met a friend or two and thought they've made it.
>>
>>2848613
Lots of people like trips, depending on who they are. Lots more people don't have any opinion at all. Then there are one or two mentally retarded (yet very vocal) idiots who attack all trips all of the time for the crime of being a trip. Don't let confirmation bias skew the facts.
>>
>>2848613
Gotta say I don't really see the point of the recent photo threads. Like dropping prints down an infinite well.

For me, the infinite well is better than isi arguing with a mentally handicapped person about the name of a lighting style that isn't even present in the photos for half the thread.

But only just barely.

Trips were most prevalent and most well accepted by the board WELL before the meetups ever happened. The only change that happened during and after the meetups were anons who didn't go, and who were upset that other people were enjoying themselves on the board.

As usual, the negative aspects of this place come from the bottom: Anon, with no photos, no critique, no helpful things to say, and a long list of things to bitch about, first of which is that nobody ever seems to listen and do what they say. These people started getting a lot more vocal around that time because they were so hurt that anyone would ever want to do something besides take their advice and worship their anonymous abuse, so they went critical mass, and destroyed most of the board, and we've been limping along with our infected shitty wreck of a board ever since.
>>
>>2848632
So compliments are somehow a bad thing? Liking things is cancer? No wonder you're insufferable. (Sorry, I'm just assuming that you're insufferable)
>>
>>2848634
I think you're complicating it. The board has always been toxic but every now and then good people come, post good pictures and make the place feel a bit better. They eventually get sick of the place and leave and it becomes more bitter. We're in a bitter place now I think
>>
>>2848634
Bullshit.
Everyone is well aware of the facebook groups and the drama they stir by linking to posts for each other to shitpost in.

It comes from the bottom and the "top" (not really but thats probably the way they perceive themselves)

All of the drama has involved the facebook cliques. ayya was outed by them while they were looking for drama, because they hated them. the other guys contact information was posted on the board and he got swatted.
If you're in the chat and aren't aware of this behavior, its because you're in containment or they're doing it more privately.
Where do you think the "lets everyone wear alphons name and be le ebic maymays" came from?
Their lust for drama ran 5hoe away.
