It is a bitch to carry along slippery shorelines and deadfall with a fully loaded rucksack as well... don't be too jelly. GF used her little 80-400 and got some excellent shots. I was jelly the whole time.
I know someone with the Sigma 150-500 and I was pretty impressed with it.
Saving up for a Nikkor 300mm f4 right now, but as much as people shittalk kit lenses the 55-200 VR really isn't too bad.

Now I'm mainly using an old Tokina AT-X 100-300mm f4, it gets nice results sometimes but manual focusing is incredibly limiting for birds and other wildlife. Hard to beat for dirt cheap, though.

I like this one a lot, but for some reason, I think I like it better as a square crop tied to the right side. Or a portrait orientation, that crops out the left half. For me the "subject" is the third bird from the top right corner, and the others are just context and support.

Yeah, I usually use square as sort of a last ditch effort for a composition that just isn't working for me. I actually tried saving the file and doing crop myself, but nothing really seems balanced right. If it had been a bit wider, maybe something would fit nicely I guess. Either way, it's a nice photo, I just get distracted by the birds on the left, and wanted to find a way to get them out.

Both my crappy laptop screen and my calibrated monitor shows yellowing.
Could be the background and a slight overexposure, I can't really find a sweet spot with editing the jpeg.
There is something off there, the more I look at it the more I am sure about it.

Don't remember, they're just old shots I dug up. Don't even have raws, they're from when I was just getting started.
I made a print of the monarch several years ago and it turned out just fine. Colors on the other seem consistent with the harsh afternoon sun for my latitude and the background colors match what was typical in that nature preserve. On the frog picture the duckweed was really that yellow-green. For giggles I tried monkeying with the color temperature to the limited extent allowed by jpeg and cooling them down looks too blue-green and unnatural. Granted I don't have a hardware calibrator but I did invest a fair amount of time using software-based calibration tools for this monitor. I guess it's all moot anyway since they're ancient history.

I didn't think this thread will be so mature and provide so many excellent shots.
I really like how some people manage to get so much out of kit lens and kit telezooms, very well done lads!

I'm going to be heading out soon to do some wildlife shooting for the first time - is there any advice anyone can offer? I shoot on film so no AF which is going to make things harder, but I like a challenge.

I assume you will be shooting on standard or short tele (135mm maximum), so concentrate on the environment, smaller crevices, insects etc...
Things that don't get spooked easily, things you can walk around and find the best angles.
For birds you will need AF and at least 300-400mm lens and lots of patience.
Just take the hike lightly, don't expect to return with spectacular results right away and if you see something you like just take a photo of, including landscape, be it a vast view of a valley or field or a closer view in the forest. Memorize places for later hikes and exploration in different light and time of day.

Without AF, and with less reach, you will be able to do much less. Seems pretty obvious...
You'll want something to support the camera. it's a LOT of waiting and watching through the camera, so if you're supporting it all with your arms, you're going to get annoyed quickly.
Trying to do birding at all at 200mm is going to be... unproductive, in my opinion.

There are situations where you can use it, but most birds like to move around a lot even when it is sitting/floating so most of the time it will be more frustration than yield. You will definitely need a monopod for that.

I agree, using 200mm on APS-C, even with an added 1.4x TC is not enough most of the time, 200mm alone on FF just won't cut it. Go for larger scenes, flock of birds, larger group of larger birds etc...
So carefully choosing your subject might work.

Some more tips, don't be afraid to show some of the environment, even if the background is bland, cropping in to such extent only magnifies noise and other defects. It is fine if your subject doesn't fill the crop frame as long as the photo in whole is pleasing to the eye.
A bit of downsampling can help a lot in the characteristic Sigma defects and CA.

I wouldn't use a third party TC, usually they do more bad than good. With a TC you will get image degradation, no matter what, but with third party you will most likely get much more flaring and worse degradation.
I would go first party, maybe Tamron or Sigma as a last resort. I wouldn't buy anything from Kenko.

Nikon TC-14E is 53,500 moon monies on amazon.jp. That's like 500 fucking dollars, which is more than the lens itself cost and twice what the body cost. The newest Kenko is 15,000. Japazon doesn't carry the Tamron TCs at all, but they're $225 on B&H.....
I see a lot of people in this thread shoot Aperture Priority or Manual. I'm pretty new to this, but how can you manage to focus and get shots this good when birds can just do whatever the fuck they want and fly away? I would think it would be better to shoot shutter priority.

Not bad, but this is why I hate to shoot in direct sunlight. No cloudcover = harsh shadows/highlights, too contrasty. More clouds, even a tree canopy can help in a more diffuse lighting.
See my OP shot, same lighting conditions (not a single cloud to be seen) but shot under tree canopy, much better even lighting.

Play around with the masking tool in LR (or whatever you use), and you will be able to get a sharper owl and a more pleasing background.

Digital shooting makes stuff possible that was impossible before. High ISO, advanced image stabilization, modern AF and generally lighter lenses enable you to take handheld pictures in low light. Back in the day you would need a tripod and/or a flash in these situations, and the results simply wouldn't be the same. You're right, I orignally did it with Rawtherapee but I just spent a couple minutes playing with it in Capture NX-D and I think it turned out a bit better.
It's tough, between the feather details making noise reduction impossible and the graininess of the D2Hs sensor it's a bit of a rock and a hard place.

Actually he was just sitting there, calling a few times, then he looked at the idiot making strange clicking and chirping noises slowly creeping closer with a strange thick glittering beak.
Then he flew off to his nest (I guess) deeper into the woods.
He came around at the same spot around the same time every day. Looked kind of cool and calm, but like I said the 200mm lens is just not long enough for shooting birds without making them alarmed.
Next week I'm going back there with my new 50-500 HSM Bigma.
