This is the thread for all of your stupid film questions, and to post your film snapshits without flushing them down the RPToilet.
It's OK to ask about film gear in this thread.

No, Neofin is also called Tetanal Blau/Blue, also called Beutler Developer.
Its an old one-shot developer designed for extracting long tonal range from slow film.
It is excellent for things like Rollei Ortho 25.

It is awful for Tri-X, but you get 2 films per vial, and I only had one ortho to do, so I threw a Tri-X in there just for fun. With a 20 minute dev time the negs still came out quite thin, and with massive grain.

This is how the Ortho turned out.
If you look at OP pic of the last thread >>2835031 , that's the box I got it out of, I'd estimate it to be about 50-60 years old, as the price appears to be in pounds and shillings. The individual glass vials seemed pretty immune to the ravages of time though, worked great.

has anyone tried xproing slide film with changes to the process so its not as contrasty and fucked up?

this is because ive seen some straight up radioactive xpros, and some really mild ones that if wouldnt were for the slightly changed tonality, would look like normal e6 development.

Yes, pic related. The kit is easy to use if you're not a moron and follow the instructions. It worked well for about a month, so try and use it before then. Or, if you only have a small tank, just mix up 500ml instead of the whole litre, and I'm sure the concentrates will last longer.

is it possible to somehow slice bulk rolls of 35mm film down to work in some kind of motion picture (super 8, regular 8, 16mm, whatever) camera?

the main benefits of this being the ability to self-develop in standard B&W chemistry, substantially lowering the cost
>>
>>2842123
Your focus is off, your film isn't flat, you have light leaks robbing contrast everywhere, and your post processing is off.
>>
>>2842193
Yes. People make very simple diy razor/wood board-based film slicers. This is used mpstly gor subminiature camera film formats. You still need to have the film perforated, though, the camera advances frames based on perforations, not spool takeup. Thus super8 znd DS8 and 8mm film incompatability. Also, you can very easily self-develop positive process bw film - it just adds 3 extra steps with easily obtainable chemicals. The viability of using film cameras in this day and age with their 2.5min of footage per 30ft/15m(8mm standards, even more for 16mm) of film (at 18fps~) on the other hand is at best extremely masochistic.

I feel like I answer this question every week.
All eos cameras have all the modes, unless you find some mega-lo-buck cereal box special I'm not aware of.
Compared to any mechanical cameras out there, they'll give you better auto exposures, more shutter speeds, more reliable film transport.
Literally buy the first working one you find in an op shop. Carry some CR123A's in your purse just incase you find one.
Shoot that until you decide whether you want to get a lushier one.
Simple as that.
>but if you really must get a model number recommend, see OP image, they're boss

asked this last time but figured it might be more helpful with a snapshit illustrating it.

recently bought a pentax k1000 but i cant even get the film loaded properly. judging from yt vids i have it in there fine, its just the rewind knob wont snap down completely, and judging by the vids it should. no amount of shifting around the film or jamming doen is getting it to budge any lower. wat do? does the fact that im using fuji film matter? i didnt think it would.

Flip the crank up.
Rotate it around until it falls into the slot.
It's such a simple mechanism though, if yit's taken you 3 posts over as many days to not figure it out yourself, I'd imagine that you're actualy clinically retarded and beyond help.
Just give your camera to a grownup to show you how it works.

all 35mm cassettes are the same. open that camera look closely at the rewinder, also examine the 35mm roll then youll understand what are you doing wrong.

I know, sometimes I'll take a few and drop them off at Walmarts in other places and they'll come right back to me. And they apparently don't let you have the negs. They do however let you have the CD for price given (at least where I'm at) which I for one can deal with since the scan quality/development process is usually decent.

First one looks fine to me. Any darker and you'd lose all the shadow detail. The second one is a bit hot but the exposure looks right for the dude and the car.

What film is this? The colors look a bit Velvia to me, and if that's what it is you might just not be getting as much dynamic range as you're used to having with digital, especially in the highlights.

You might have your monitor brightness too high, if you're only seeing this in the scans.

nothing is blown out except for small specular highlights on the car and possibly a tiny bit of sky on the upper right in the first.

Adjust with curves. It is very difficult to really overexpose with negative film if that's what you were using.

I just used GIMP which is free. If the files they give you are TIFF, that's better than JPG. If you are shooting outdoors, try ISO 100.

>>
>>2842591
Haha I had a Rebel G back in the day. I don't think it has a depth of field preview but you don't want to be shooting wide open with the kit lens anyway.

As for your developing questions, Mpix does it although I don't know if they are good. But that's where I get prints from and they are good so hopefully they are the same.

I'd shoot 100 for the finer grain. Not sure what shutter speeds you were getting so it might not be worth it.

>>
>>2842666
hello satan.

>I have been shooting DSLR for about 5 years

thats an important piece of info. because of that you might be already spoiled for IQ, so maybe a 35mm as main camera wont cut it and may even dissapoint you. i suggest this approach:

1) a cheap TLR (ie. yashica) for medium format goodness and eye popping IQ.
2) a small 35mm point and shoot for fun careless shooting (mju 1 or 2).
>>

>>
>>2842544
>first roll of film ever. had it done at a drug store and they did not return my negatives
When processing C-41 at any place near me, I just ask them to either not cut the roll, or ask for process only.

It works about 9.5 times out of 10. The 0.5 times are always human error.
>>
>>2842666
You need an F4 or newer to use any lenses you have that lack an aperture ring.
>>
>>2842666
Also G lenses won't work and will probably give some serious vignetting.

Your light source is shit. Incomplete color spectrum, and not very bright. And you aren't masking out all the light source that isnt part of the image frame...to stop it causing flare and lowering contrast.
also: inb4 you have a UV filter on.

Forgot to mention I didn't have a UV filter on. I used a flash to take the photo here >>2842854
so it was probably th reason why it isn't that bright.

Well, you're a fucking retard.

You can see the sub-pixel array - I'll let you guess why your colours are fucked when your using led light (single wavelength) as a backlight.

Get some perspex for light diffusion, set it an inch off your screen, make sure your film is completely flat and try again.

Don't want to pay for perspex? create a film holder out of some stiff card and keep the film an inch or 2 off the screen.

just get a neutral led and make a diffuser. shouldn't cost more than $20 total.
>>
>>2842854
your film needs to be further away from the tablet screen, so many pixels showing through.

I tried it again this time I use an acrylic glass as you mention and the film is an inch above the screen. No more pixels are showing but the colors are still far off.

It's a different frame but yeah the colors are still off.

Still a useless raw, no one said anything about putting it on glass - which is why you have those weird ripples.

And it needs to be a white, diffusive perspex, you still have the light spectrum problems going on so can't get accurate colours.
>>
>>2842933
I put mine on a piece of white acrylic, and place the acrylic across the top of a white cardboard box. I then put my flash in the box with my wireless trigger (though you could use a TTL Cable) and shoot down at the negative. I get a little spill, but the light is otherwise pretty good.

Ok. Sorry I'm just a beginner at scanning and never thought it was a hard process. It just that the videos I saw for tutorials pretty much used the same method as mine but they have great scans.

Not getting any help from /g/.

Can someone answer this::
I'm looking for a video camera with better life than this. I want it to have similar stats and functionality, but with a ~90+ min battery life, preferably more.

I kinda would like a camcorder, like those little handheld ones, but I'm not sure what's actually good.

See, this one looks nice:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CHWTZPE/ref=ox_sc_act_title_11?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3MXAQFA0VQPBJ

However, someone said all the reviews are fake... and they kinda look it.

Then there's, like, this one:
http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00YX6KPQ6/ref=twister_B00YX6KJZ8?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Seems pretty good also, but I can't find any results about battery life, other than people saying it's "good", but "good" would mean 2h+ for me.

I have a few others listed, but this last one here seems like the best option, but I wanna know what y'all think:
http://smile.amazon.com/Sony-HDRCX240-Video-Camera-2-7-Inch/dp/B014X23ATS?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=A5W45QDYAHWB2

So, ultimately, I guess, what's a good camcorder for YouTube vids? I do NOT want to exceed $200, if at all possible.

If it can record for 2 hours in 720p, I'm more than happy.

But my Olympus
>pic related
only gets, AT MOST 70 minutes, and it has a automatic record end after 46 minutes

Any suggestions?
Is the $159.95 one good?

The light leak I was referring to was indeed the poorly isolated negative. You have to cut out any stray light when you're scanning, including the light from your own light source. Ideally your negative mask also covers the sprocket holes.

So i also have a canonet. Its shaped like a brick but the position of the shutter and the lack of a raised grip allows me to move my hand around more freely.

The bessa's shutter takes a bit more reach from the finger and has a raised grip, so its a bit more filling in the hands. The angle of the grip is interesting, it forces you to hold the camera in a functional way, where I'm sort of cupping the back instead of the side (maybe this makes it easier to take quicker shots because you can access the advance quicker?). Of course this could just be because I have small hands.

If I were to give my a6000 a score itd be 9/10 for holdability. The bessa gets a 7.5 because the angle of the grip doesnt fit my thumb (maybe small hands). And the canonet gets a 4-5

>you're going to run into the dynamic range limit of your scanner and computer monitor far before you run into the dynamic range limit of film

Not with slide film you won't. Chromes have a pretty narrow DR, which is why they're so much harder to expose properly than print film. They're about on par with a DSLR from 10 years ago.

Print film is a different story, though. It's got a lot of latitude, but the curves are weird compared to what we're used to with digital, and you'll see highlights become brighter and shadows become darker than they'd be on a modern digital image. That's why we spent so much time burning and dodging in the darkroom in the old days.
>>
>>2843434
this one is great, I didn't even realize it was two frames

the rest not so much
>>
>>2842567
Print film and most B&W has a ton of latitude while you're shooting, which lets you shoot at ISO 100, or in some cases, up to 1600 on the same film stock without issue.

But once you've developed it, bringing up shadows and bringing down highlights, and overall moving the exposure around in post, doesn't really work nearly as well as a current gen digital sensor.
>>
Hey guys, I broke my Android phone the other day and I can't get the Darkroom Timer app for the Windows Phone POS I'm using as a temporary replacement.

Is there a PC equivalent you guys can recommend, so I can just use my laptop? Obviously I can just do it the old fashioned way with a watch if I have to, but a hands off solution that knows when to switch chemicals, agitate, etc would be a nice thing.
>>
>>2843736
>>2843744
first of all, you guys misread my post. I'm not compasing film vs. digital sensors, I'm talking about scanning negatives.
It's extremely difficult to capture all the usable information within a negative accurately, even with relatively advanced scanners or DSLR setups.

he is shooting CN film (superia). he is most definitely not "blowing the highlights" with a 1-2 stop overexposure.

>>2843744
and this is utterly false, anyway. you have an incomplete understanding of how film works
>>
>>2843758
>It's extremely difficult to capture all the usable information within a negative accurately, even with relatively advanced scanners or DSLR setups.

No it fucking isn't. Negatives might have a lot of dynamic range but it's very compressed, so they're very easy to scan. Ever wonder why straight scans are so low contrast?
>>
>>2843763
low contrast doesn't mean you're necessarily capturing all the information that could be brought out in an optical print, it depends on your light source and scanning methods

look at this
>>2842540
if you simply darken those highlights, you're going to be missing out on detail. it would be like having a RAW file, then re-photographing it as JPEG. there is information that is lost in translation

not saying that good scanners don't exist, but there going to be outside the budget of most /p/hotographers and local drugstore film labs
>>
>>2843768
Which is why you expose to the right to capture all that delicious highlight detail, then play with the RAW after...

Is it worth spending the extra €40 or so on getting the Olympus OM-1N or the OM-1 is fine?

I got brownie no. 2 from a friend in a trade the other day and i was wondering how long i can expose iso 100 film at the smallest aperture. I think its f22 but i can make it smaller if i need to cause i want to do pretty long exposures (ex. 1 min. ). Can you guys please help me out. Ive researched and i dont own a light meter but i dont have to be exact i just want to be in the ball park.

>>
>>2844682
>these days
As if they haven't been popular for decades already.

The focusing is different, so you might compose different, and also shoot with both eyes open. You might see outside the frame which can be useful. Not having a mirror between the lens and film allows for different lens designs. And often rangefinders are sleeker, lighter and quieter.

I'm still a little confused about how rangefinders work. is the image within the smaller yellow frame the image actually captured on the film? or is the smaller frame what you see, but the film actually captures an area around that?

also, if the answer is the former, why don't they just black-out everything around the smaller frame so that your viewfinder is exactly the same as captured on the film, like an SLR?
>>
>>2844743
>why don't they just black-out everything around the smaller frame so that your viewfinder is exactly the same as captured on the film, like an SLR?

Some rangefinders change the frame lens depending on what lens is attached. WIth a 28mm lens attached you may be using the whole viewfinder frame. With a 50mm lens attached it may be the smaller, interior frame. This allows you to use different lenses without needing external viewfinders.

>millenials

Actually, I'm in my 30s and was shooting and developing film when DSLRs were in their infancy. I went to school for photography when the first 3 years out of 4 were nothing but film, and my first job in the industry was as an assistant to a fashion photographer who had me developing a dozen or more rolls of 120 a day. (Albeit with a rotary processor, which made things a bit easier.) I've probably processed more film than the entire rest of /p/ put together.

That said, my eyes are going to shit and staring at the little tiny stopwatch display on my watch is kinda hard, plus it's easy to lose track of time while preparing chemicals for the next step with one hand while agitating with the other. It's also just nice to kinda zone out while souping roll after roll, maybe you guys really enjoy the process but I've done too many in my life and just want my film done and ready for printing.
>>
>>2844807
I'm having a hard time believing you've developed more rolls than all of /p/ combined and haven't used various different timers and cannot come up with a solution on your own to such a simple problem
>>
>>2844811
I said straight out in the original post that I can just do it the normal way with a stopwatch and that an app is just convenient. That's how I've been doing it lately, just thought /p/ might know about something to make things a bit more streamlined.

The darkroom timer app revolutionized developing for me, almost as much as digital did for photography in general. Suddenly I don't have to dig through a notebook full of developing solutions and keep track of every single step, and can instead just load up whichever one I want and have everything handed to me. It's damn nice.

I'm assuming it's because RFs are way smaller and you generally naturally only use one finger to focus them, whereas on an SLR, the way you hold the camera naturally lends itself to focusing using thumb and forefinger.

I don't have a film holder and it seems to make scanning easier and improves overall quality of the scans?
>>
>>2845040
the fact that there's no mirror means that the lens is closer to the film, so in theory it's possible to have better performance while staying smaller, shitty rangefinders exist. I wouldn't sweat it though, the olympus om are as small, quiet as slrs get and their lenses are brilliant so the differences won't be very noticeable apart from the focusing mechanism.

You should be able to adjust your focus screen. I recently had some back focus issues on my RZ67, adjusted the screen and now I'm right as rain.

There should be little screws underneath the screen that control the height, take apart the film holder, lock open the shutter with bulb mode, and put a piece of frosted scotch tape across where the film would go. Adjust focus on your screen, then check the tape with a magnifier, adjusting the focus until it's right on the film plane. Then just adjust your screen until they match. This method should get you very close, make a test roll then adjust from there.

F3. Better built, better accessories, better lens selection.

Only downside is price.

I borrowed a film camera, but I still haven't developed any pictures
would a regular scanner be enough for a good digitalization? (besides post-processing) why?

A "regular" scanner? No, you need a scanner that can scan transparencies and negatives, the difference being that these are backlit.
>>
>>2842455
shit i had this problem with my nikon f3. the film won't stay on the sprocket's teeth. realized i had to curl the end of the tail of the film and roll the 2nd sprocket inward to get it clamped on.
>>
>>2845457
>>2845472
If pic related is scanner it looks like it has backlight

Also what format film? My 35mm HP5 is WAY better DLSR scanned with a macro lens but I tend to use a scanner for 120 HP5 film where the negative is much bigger and the scanner gets decent resolution.

Also if your a poorfag like me I use a regular scanner and use my 2009 macbook + empty (blank/white) text edit as a backlight.
>>
>>2845493
>>2845457
yes my scanner is pic related. I have to see if it has backlight. if so, it could work? thank you.

Been shooting a lot lately, just carrying this thing on the street is really pretty fun honestly. Spent about 4 hours in the darkroom tonight, gonna scan a bunch of prints and a new contact later.

Anybody know of a good wrist strap for my meter? Probably just gonna use a wiimote strap.

Anyone in NZ that could recommend me a place that does decent digital scans?

I took a roll to photo warehouse and the resolution is absolute garbage and half of the jpgs are corrupted and turned out like pic related.

The usual things that differentiate cheap and expensive things. Better optics, ergonomics, build quality.,

That anon saying that's not a real rangefinder though is stupid b8 tho

DSLR scanning has failed me /p/. What's a good high resolution flatbed film scanner?
>>
I've been shooting digital for a year or so now and I was wanting to get into film photography.

Can anyone recommend a good film camera to start out with for around 100 pounds or less. I was thinking of maybe going for a canon a1, is this a good choice?
>>
>>2845806
V700 is okay. the rest are all pretty terrible.
>>
>>2845813
Sure.
>>
Any decent non flatbed scanners?
Read about some dedicated 35mm scanners which might be best as I only shoot 35mm.
>>
>>2845751
except you usually miss the zone focus experience on those pos. not to mention, the patch is usually dead.
>>
>>2845814
what about the epson v600?
>>
>>2845861
It's worse than the V700.

If you have 35mm, get a dedicated film scanner like the Plustek 8100.

If you have medium format, get better at DSLR scanning.

If you have large format, the V700.

My V600 gave me good results with medium format and usable results with 35mm. I compared the quality of the scans to a dedicated 35mm scanner and the dedicated plustek scanner did a better job but not by enough to justify ditching MF as I shot that a lot.

If I was to buy another scanner (As I emigrated and had to sell my old one) I would go with another epson flatbed

Got some b&w reversal film in the mail for 8mm shoot. It was refrigerated until it was sent to me (exp. in 2015) and once I got it I put it back in the fridge again. Can it stay in there for a few more months and be shot at its original asa or does it need to be shot at a lower sensitivity (was originally 250)?

Mate it'll be fine for a few more years in the fridge to shoot at its listed ISO

If I'm looking to get into film photography, how much should I be paying for a Pentax K1000 off of ebay?

$0.
Buy a camera with a proper focusing screen and aperture priority ability.
>>
>>2846506
Such as?
>>
How much of a disadvantage are Bessa's short rangefinder base lengths?
>>
>>2846510
A newer pentacks like an ME?
Any Nikon, such as those in OP?
Any Olympus?
Most Ricohs?
K1000's are just too big, heavy, old and expensive for what they are.
>>
>>2846526
I'm sure they're perfectly fine for anything shorter than 50 and slower than f/1.4
>>
any spotmatic type pentax but with auto capabilities?
>>
>>2846533
I find 50 1.1 on a R2A just fine. A longer RF base would be better, but the Bessa's certainly isn't a problem.
>>
>>2846537
Not Pentax, but the Chinon CE II and III Memotron have aperture priority with any M42 lens iirc (and a bunch of other nice features). Don't know if they have full auto too.
