I've gotten into photography a few months ago and just wondering if people think I'm any good and if I should try and stay at it. Also I would love to see your own work so post away /p/.

Honestly, they aren't really that good, just to be realisitic. It take a lot of time to figure out composition, exposure, editing, etc. But never be discouraged. Take a look at pic related. I started taking photography seriously in 2009, working as an assistant photographer and sports photographer, I was still learning the basics of my camera and photo editing. In 2011 I really started working on perfecting my photography abilites after I had figured out the basics of the camera, composistion and whatever else.
What you need to do is watch some tutorials on youtube to figure out the tools for editing RAW photos (shoot raw if you have a camera that can do that) and check out popular photos on flickr, and instagram to get inspiration for your own photos.
And obviously get out and shoot as much as you can

I got an actual camera a RebelT5 about a week ago. Also how the fuck do I get my wide angle lens off my camera it seems to have stuck on the zoom lens not sure if the threading is crewed or what any experience with this?
>>2841457
There's a small button next to the lens that you press while you twist your lens off.
The t5 is a good starting point. Make sure you shoot with raw images, and get photoshop or lightroom to learn to edit the photos, it will help a lot

No the zoom lens isn't stuck the wide angle lens is stuck into zoom lens
>>2841480
LOL what??
Post a picture of what you're talking about. I can't tell if you mean the two lenses are stuck together or the lens is stuck on a specific focal length.
>>2841480
fuq u mean bro
>>2841482
You know how you screw the wide angle lens on to the zoom lens well I'm not sure how but it is stuck on the zoom lens.
>>2841533
Do you have some sort of wide angle adapter that you screw onto the front of your lens?
If so, and it's stuck, it might be difficult to remove it. I had a filter stuck to the end of one of my lenses once, and I got it off by trying to twist it off while lightly tapping it against a counter.
>>2841538
Yeah sorry it's an adapter that's what I meant. I still have all the paper work and warranty from when I bought it do you think they would be able to either get it off or replace it because I'm worried about breaking the zoom lens

How much of this colour did you achieve in post and how much did you achieve in camera?
i'm i pretentious? (it's a double exposure photo)
>>2841747
Quite a bit of it was achieved in post through saturation. The colors are truely there, but I just had to saturate and vibrance it a lot. I used a few adjustment brushes, gradients and radial adjustments too. I also modified the white balance to more blue and magenta

>>2841783
Just wondering when editing where should I draw the line from looking good and looking realistic I don't like photos that make think that hours went into post because what was taken a shot of doesn't really exist doesn't actually look like it's believeable. Also what editing software do you use?
>>2841776
Is this supposed to represent humans as just becoming computers with no emotions or thoughts on their own if so I like the idea just not the execution I think a photo like this would look really cool in a dark server room with lots of small lights reflecting
>>2841810
I totally understand what you mean. I don't spend much time on my photos, and it's always a fine line between going over the line of too much editing.
One thing I always do, and I highly reccomend it, is I'll sit down and edit the photo one time. I won't post it right away. I'll go do something else for a few hours, then come back and re-evaluate the edit. Sometimes I'll see that I went too far, sometimes not far enough, or something I can change or make better. I'll keep taking small breaks from my photos until I'm happy with it. Normally I'll only edit a single photo for like 15-20 minutes max.
I edit all my photos on adobe camera raw, and I just recently started doing my black and white photos with Nik Silver efex, which is free, and is fantastic for black and white conversions.
As far as where to draw the line, that's up to you. I know a lot of people would say I way over did my photo. The biggest thing for me is making sure you can't see any "seams" with the color. Sometimes if you use a brush or gradient, it's very noticeable and will be easy to pick out what is edited. On the photo with the skyline of SD, I can list off what I did besides the normal adjustments (saturation, contrast, etc.)
1 radial adjustment to create a simple vignette
2 gradient on the sky to increase saturation
3 gradient on water increasing saturation and clarity
4 brush on clouds bringing down highlights in bright spots
5 brush on buildings to adjust clarity and white balance of buildings

Wow thanks for all that like I said I'm very new and my computer has recently broke so i can't do any heavy editing plus the 2 I uploaded are completely unedited
>>2841810
>I don't like photos that make think that hours went into post because what was taken a shot of doesn't really exist doesn't actually look like it's believeable.
The thing is, chances are pretty good that the photography you liked when you didn't know shit about shit, the photos that first made you want to pick up a camera? They were edited to hell and back. The print has always been 50% of a photograph (if not more). They did it way back in the film days when your great grandpappy was just a spry lad, and they do it today.
There's this misled belief among beginners that good photography is like Japanese ink brush painting or calligraphy, where you just eventually get really good and beautiful images pour of your camera every time you press the shutter button and you don't have to edit any of them. It never really works like that. If you look at the contact sheets and print notes for any of the greats, you'll find out that a masterpiece is made, not captured. You need a good "negative" (or digital file, or whatever), but then you have to learn to pull the image you have in your head out of that negative and show it to the audience.
>>2841820
That sucks. How bad is your current computer? You can get a 30 day free trial of photoshop and lightroom to try it out. I don't think you need an insanely powerful computer to run them. I use a 3 year old laptop to run mine, and it works great.
Just make sure you shoot in RAW, you have to go into your camera menu to change it to that. The raw editing will give you a greater ability to edit the photos, and will produce a higher quality photo.
But if you don't have editing software, just shoot jpeg
>>2841823
That's true thanks for that it's always helpful to get another perspective mind if I upload a couple other photos I took and you critique them for me?
>>2841824
It's pretty fucking bad it's Toshiba the actual inside of the laptop is falling out and the screen won't stay up. My step dad is buying a new Mac 2 in 1 and said I could have his old one in a few months so I'm just waiting until honeslty I have a friend that said he would let me use his to edit.

>>2841440
>>2841831
With these two I'd say that the intent was to have symmetry in the image, so when doing symmetical images, you have to be very precise to make sure the images are perfect. And the first one is very out of focus
>>2841444
I can see what you were focusing on this, the glow on the top of the light pole is very interesting, I think that maybe shifting the camera further to the left would create a slightly better composition, not bad though
>>2841832
Not a big fan of this one, just nothing to grab my interest
>>2841834
I feel like there's too much going on in this image to distract from what you're trying to show. The fountain? your friend? What's the focal point?
>>2841835
Not bad, it's hard to go wrong with train tracks when you're starting out
>>2841839
LOL this one makes me cringe! I'm super alergric to poison oak! Nice color though
I'd say just work on your composition and figuring out what the focus in your image is supposed to be, like what the viewer is supposed to be looking at. And hopefully you can get the filter off the front of your lens
>>2841842
Honeslty the the bridge, the lamp, train tracks and poison oak were all around the same area but it was hard to really focus on it because 4 cop cars pulled down their and were watching me the entire time and was super weirded out because I had a shit ton of alcohol and weed in my car. But that you very much for all of that and yeah the seesaw one was really mainly for me and few friends because we spent almost out entire childhood at that park playing on those things lol.
>>2841842
Also the church one has better symettry when I took the photo but when I cropped it I rushed and didn't check it. How do you set up a photo to get perfect symmetry do you use the 3x3 grid thing?
>>2841843
Yeah, I'm not trying to shit on your photos. The photos I took when I started were fucking horrible, your are better than mine when I started. It just takes a lot of time.
>>2841844
A lot of the symetry is going to come from you setting up your camera. A tripod really helps. Even if you can spare like $40 for a cheap one, that will really help. But yeah when I crop I'll generally use the grid to make sure the lines are all lined up
>>2841846
Nah man I really appreciate it and I already have a tripod just didn't have it on me I'll probably go back and re do all of these with your tips man

Is there a rule of thumb with which I can get from resolution to biggest "good enough IQ to print" size?
I am looking specifically to print on canvas.
>>2842355
How big?
Generally 300 dpi is standard for prints. You'll be able to get by with less on canvas (since it isn't a high sharpness material) but how much less depends on the process, and the photo, and the canvas.
>>2842357
So I just divide the Pixels I want to use by 300 and I got the maximum size?
I did that and I refuse to believe that a 16MP image can only get to 40cm / 15in in width.
>>2842361
Yep.
A photo that has 6000 pixels on its long side can be printed at 20 inches long using 300 dpi. 6000/300=20
>>2842362
Well it CAN go as large as you want, but the lower the DPI, the more you see a degradation of details in the print. 300 is optimum. Many people print at 200. If you're going to be four feet away, you can get away with 150. Etc.
>>2842115
that is weird almost looks like a blue screen they would use on movie sets. Mind if I ask what town this was?
>>2842107
This one is really nice also, what videos, books or websites do you recommend for explaining how to correctly use composition in a photo.
>>2842371
>billboards
>>2842371
Billboards are meant to be seen from hundreds of feet away. They can be 10 dpi and you won't have any idea. If you get up on one, the dots making up the images look like golf balls.
>>2842374
>how I feel when I enter a hobby and see professional gear.
>>2842371
There are certain tricks. I use a plugin for photoshop called Alien skins and it works really well for scaling your image up. It won't perform miracles, but it will help in a lot of situations.
As far as canvas goes, you can probably get away with a little bit lower resolution because the texture on the canvas makes an image look blurry regardless of what the resolution is.
For billboards, they're probably shooting with 40-50 mp cameras, but because the billboards aren't being viewed from 2 feet away, they don't need to print 300dpi. I think they print as low as 12dpi sometimes

do u know the date and time of shoot for this? One of my friends dad is a professional sports photographer and he sometimes gets that when its near dusk but the stadium lights are a little late coming up but there is still a lot of city light refracting into the lens causing what he calls "staining" in the photos. Its still really rare because there have to be almost no clouds in the sky even if they aren't in the shot because that will keep it from staining. Something to do with light reflecting off the white of clouds.

Having fallen in to this trap early in my photography days, I would advise not taking shots of any of the following: statues, paintings, murals, etc...it's all someone else's art and if you aren't doing something very unique with it (likely involving creative lighting), it won't work. Be more selective with what you shoot. Quality is always more important than quantity.

>Quality is always more important than quantity.
I've heard the oppsite: "attack many objects from many different angles, always take an opportunity to practice"
Also, I use many shots of statues for learning to work with Darktable and other programms. They are easy to work with, tho, I admit. I try other things from time to time

damn I remember coming back from several days of tripping around austria and visiting a friend in karlsruhe tired as fuck. we walked through the streets that night and saw a roadman working on the tracks with that bright as shit blue light spilling all over. had that surreal feeling to it. guess it was mainly me being exhausted tho

It's fine to take a lot of shots. But for me, if I take 200 shots, I may keep one or two. No reason to save every shot you take (or post it for critique).

lol I dunno. is it? the scene just really reminded me of that night

And another one reporting in.
I'm trying to upload a timelapse, but I can only convert to MP4, not WEBM. i use a h.264 codec. Then I use Convertio to convert to Webm, but that file always ends up FUCKING HUGE (2-3 times as big). Any good programms to get the original MP4 into, crops away the black box and then turn into WEBM? Currently using Blender on a windows/Linux setup
Also some pointers I'd like to know:
Also, do you do Timelapses? this one was 223 pictures at 1 picture every 5 seconds, so it's roughly 18 minutes.
What kind of Timelapse would I need for, for example an opening flower? What are good motives for timelapses. In this one I hoped the sound would come around and through the clouds.

I like it.
I tried making and HDR in Darktable from an autobracketing shot with this one, 3*1/3 but it seems a bit weak to me. Should I try another stting instead? I was thinking about 3*1 or may 5*2/3.
What's a good rule of thumb for finding a good autobracketing range? How much is needed for clouds and landscapes and how much for caves or otherwise badly illuminated areas like this one?

Bump?
Really trying to get decent HDRs
Also, why does Darktable HDR always turn yellowish-greenish? I was just lucky that in this case, it fitted the theme
