Any tips for shooting in low income / decadent areas, /p/?
I was testing out my new Lumix on a slightly older are of town. Long story short, was approached, threatened and almost robbed by four negro fellas for accidentally filming their car while it drove by, it was only by luck that a decent amount of people approached us and broke them off me. The fuckers made me loose my lens hood too.
How do I not get fucking stabbed and killed for wanting to shoot shoddy neighborhoods? Perhaps bringing a friend along next time could help?

tbqh it is kind of a shitty thing to do. it's not like you shouldn't ever go to those neighbourhoods. Can't blame people for being irritated that you want to turn their homes (and potentially faces) into cute little postcards of urban decay. I mean, sure, simply grabbing photographic samples of poverty and packaging them "into cute little postcards of urban decay" with the sole purpose of profit and self promotion is obviously not an ethical thing to do, but saying you're not allowed to portray any sort of urban decadence is a nonsensical statement. If what you're displaying is conceived in a way that's not offensive to the locals, if you're simply shooting regular streets and columns of generic grey commie blocks that not even the residents consider to have any particular identity by themselves and you're not using it as means to an end, then you're really not doing anything exploitative. I'm not trying to do poverty porn here, I just genuinely like that part of town.
Plus, It's not like I'm comparatively rich either, not just was the "new Lumix" I was talking about was bought by 100£ at a second hand market but I also grew in that same neighborhood throughout most of my childhood. I passed by multiple locals around the area and most of them were nice elderly people who just smiled at me and stepped out of the way when I was shooting something even if they didn't really have to, literally no one else around the streets seemed to mind. The four people who attacked me and almost wrecked my camera weren't worried about being negatively portrayed, they were just hooligans looking to start trouble during a fun day of soccer.
TL;DR, representations of poverty are not intrinsically exploitative, if they're done with respect. I'm not trying to do poverty porn here, I just genuinely liked that part of town.

dress only the basic, no need for brands and shit. Don't bring your top cam (don't say) and be wake to everything aroung you... I like to take this kind of photograph too, I don't care if you guys call me names because of it, I just don't care. So I know your struggle.
Large pockets for small cameras for quick draw/hide is another idea. And don't look like a creepy tho, try to look Ok, not so nicely, not so badguy
The problem isnt the camera. Its that you look like a bitch ass faggot, you're in their community and you are a fun, easy target.
I've been round some of the sketchiest bits of london with a medium format camera and a tripod, no worries.
Also, the white estates are where you need to be much more careful. Large groups of 16-24 year old white estate scum is the only situation i turn around, those kids dont give a fuck.

You think thugs care about the cost of the gear you are using? Someone once told them that cameras are expensive (not to mention they liken them to surveillance, etc.), therefore a random white person pointing a camera in their direction is like someone screaming, "LOOK AT THESE NIGGERS COMMITTING CRIMES."
What you need to do is grow a dick and get some confidence, or train to run really fast. I almost never get bothered since I guess I look like a downtrodden youth moreso than a rich white kid.
Also, if you aren't American and "can't" get a gun, then what are you worried about? You have an irrational fear of firearms and think that anyone who lives in a ghetto is willing to commit unprovoked murder, which probably means you are a pussy fuccboi who deserves whatever he gets while taking pictures of minorities in their own neighborhoods.

It all depends on the look. Not using a DLSR is a good start, but having something that looks small and a bit fucked (a film camera could actually work here).
Sticky tape on the outside of the camera/lens (like you've shoddily repaired it) it great for 'devaluing' equipment.
Engaging people (talk to shopkeepers, panhandlers, etc) it generally good for street photos.
Focus on inanimate stuff 90% of the time, then occasionally snap people walking past or in the background. Obviously 'dat creeper look' is what you're (we're) trying to avoid.
If the area isn't too criminal (eg. poorish places in Asia), I've personally found you can get away with a lot by looking 'artsy' and photographing arches/walls (people just start to ignore you).
