/p/, help me out. I'm looking for a decent camera (16MP or better) to bring on kayak so I don't drown the Nikons (D80 & D7200)
Mostly landscape shots but lots of wildlife so decent zoom would be good. In a perfect world it would be TTL viewing with diopter adjustment since I"m old as fuck and my eyes have gone to shit.
Waterproof
Prefer to stay under 400, ideally 200ish but can go higher if needed.
thx in advance for any help.

Maybe just buy a waterproof bag? Unless you're planning on going down some serious Rapids. ... they work well as long as you are not deep diving.

Pentax k30 or k50 with the 50 1.8 or 35 2.4 and a dry bag just in case it really gets submerged.
>>2837196
The only cams, that can do this by themselves without complicated and costly cases, would be one of those toughcams, in that they can get fully submerged no problem.
Don't really have zooms though.
Have a look at the current Olympus one; seems to have various lens attachements for tele and wide.
Don't know the model number.

I take my Sony A7 with me kayaking. Just don't be an idiot and if you're scared get a dry bag. If you have a good camera, use it. Don't sacrifice quality over the chance you might dump it.

lolympus all the way
Seriously consider Nikonos.

50/1.8 and 35/2.4 are not WR.
I got my kid a Pentax WG series for using at the beach and in puddles and shit. Seems pretty indestructible and the IQ is pretty good too.

I recently did a ton of research on the latest generation of tough/waterproof compacts. I ended up getting a Nikon AW130. I think it's got the best price-performance ratio with a competent stabilized lens and nice IQ. It's also got very fleshed-out GPS functionality and it has the best depth rating without a housing.
As for other options, you've got:
Olympus TG-4 - It's almost twice the price of the Nikon and has a faster but shorter lens. Video is pretty crappy but the stills look nice. Charges from a proprietary USB cable, ick. It's the only one with RAW support which is why they can keep demanding such a ludicrous price for it. If all the camera manufacturers weren't typical boneheaded Jap corporations they would have enabled RAW support through firmware updates and completely killed the demand for the TG-4. Also half the depth rating of the Nikon.
Oly TG-870 - Widest, but slow lens and dogshit cellphone-tier IQ. Nice video though and it has a flippy screen.
Ricoh WG-5 - Uses the same lens stack/sensor as the TG-4 for a significantly lower price. Has a cool ringlight built in but the interface kinda sucks, it's awkward to hold, and the zoom and operations are slooooow. Nice IQ but in the end most of its guts are identical to the Pentax WG-3 a couple generations ago.
Canon D30 - It's pretty average if not outdated. Second only to the Nikon for depth rating but the lens is slow, AF is slow, and the image quality is a bit lacking. Doesn't really have any interesting features or capabilities at all, but it's cheap.
Fuji XP90 - It's hard to find info about this but as far as I can tell it's just a marginal improvement on the XP80, which DEFINITELY wasn't worth writing home about. Slow lens, janky metering, average build, crappy sharpness, no features. Probably the cheapest option though.

If you go over your budget you could get a Nikon AW-1. Personally I've read enough reports of the thing flooding to be terrified of the little devil-box, but I snorkel and free-dive and I imagine your usage will be quite a bit different.
As people mentioned before you can get a dry bag, but in the end if it goes in the water you're fucked anyway. With all that gear in it even if the bag integrity holds it's going to drop like an anchor and you'll never see it again. If it's on a rope or something the shock of going taut could rupture the seals, and you have to deal with the awkwardness of manipulating lens and controls in a giant nasty camera condom. At least with a compact you can toss it on a float strap or a lanyard and not have to worry about it.

Easy on the contrast there, bucko.

this is what i use i got it at a local Walmart and if it goes into the water it will still float even with my camera in it

TG-860 Lolympus owner here.
Despite the less-than-subpar IQ especially in the higher ISOs, the flippy screen is hilariously useful underwater because it lets you actually take photos without going underwater. The video is surprisingly very good and I believe it does 60fps full HD. It feels good in the hands and the battery life is alright.
The program mode, if you're nifty, can be tricked into doing what you want the camera to do in the absence of PSAM. The creative modes aren't too horrible.

With some decent light I might be able to do some better underwater work with it where I can get down in the lower ISO (lowest is 125) and get a decent image.
I don't regret my decision on buying it though.

It does get VERY wide it's roughly equivalent to 22 or 24mm on 135 format. You can get away with lower ISO on still subjects with the built-in image stacking feature, they call it something else but it takes a bunch of pictures in one second and stacks all the sharp parts together.

You won't get DSLR IQ out of it but as a carry piece it's pretty good. It has survived diesel fuel being sprayed all over it, stuff dropped on it, it has been in the springs, you will definitely like it for what it is.

The super macro function is absurd. You can practically place the lens against the subject and get a picture.

If I had to do it all over again I would buy this camera. The flippy screen lets you shoot it like a TLR which can allow you to get stealthy shots and sneak up on subjects.
The stabilizer isn't too bad and my only gripe with it is a slow lens, but if you're careful you can stay below 400 ISO and get decent results.

Yeah, swamps and beer bottles are known for being jumpy. Good thing.
Buy a small pelican case for your camera. Problem solved
