Those towers would have been great for some abstract shit. Too bad hipsters would have thought of it long before I did.
Not really. I've taken some good and bad images throughout the years and there really isn't one singular photo that stands out among the rest of them in my mind. Maybe within a whole set there is one that is considered to be composed well and appeals to a majority of people looking at it but looking at them with the "eye of a photographer" you'll never have one that you really see as "perfect" or "the best."
Nikon f3
Vivitar 17mm
Kodak tmax 100 developed in ilfosol 3
Semi proud of myself doing the entire photographic process (besides printing) in home, not a lab.

You'll feel even better if you ever make an actual BW print. Shit's literally like making magic.
This is a picture I'm proud of. My parents, last Easter. They loved the picture so I printed it at 11x14 and had it framed for them. This is just a scan of a 5x6 test print, but the 11x14 is awesome.

I was very happy to get this one... can be challenging to get interesting lighting and an interesting backdrop when it comes to wildlife.
GF and I saw him sleeping and took a good 40 min creeping up on him around a hillside. Was tempting to just shoot, but we wanted to get as close as possible, and also wait for the light to be just right. He was in shadow for some time until the sun dropped low enough to shine through the trees.
So worth it.

Away on the road, so don't have the images to post, but after a plane crash near where I live, several years ago, I shot some images of one of the sister aircraft taking off and landing at sunset for the family of the first officer of the crash aircraft to use at his funeral.

This one right here.
It's shot at a very oblique angle to the track fence, through one of the photo holes. The "window" I had to shoot through was so small that even at 800-ish mm, I'd only get one clean shot while panning with the car at 9FPS.
I posted the pic a few places after it was published on the blog I was shooting for, and a bunch of really notable motorsports photographers really liked it and said it was an angle they'd never seen before, which is a pretty big deal since Laguna Seca is one of the most photographed tracks on earth.

Please care to explain the picture in the background hanging into your subjects head, oh great social media master.
You work under controlled shooting settings and don't even get that stuff right, you are in control over everything in your frame and make such amateur mistakes.
>>2840940
That stupid thing has bothered me forever.
It's not really a controlled set, it's the Japanese suite at Hotel Kabuki in San Francisco. I was splayed at a weird angle shooting through this gap in the internal "wall" that I circled in the photo here, and could barely even see my viewfinder as I was shooting.
Honestly I don't think it's an incredible shot or even the best from the set, but it's far and away the most popular photo I've ever taken and has become one of cosplay's most famous photos.
She was the social media master by the way, I just took the photo.

>>2840975
hey I'll grant you most of those points, but the near eye is tack sharp at full size.
Honestly I look at these photos and tear my hair out over how much of a noob I was back then. The one that gets me is the shadow by her knees.
This is kind of making me want to dig up the original RAW and reprocess it now that I've got 5 years or so more experience, but I don't really feel like revisiting photos of my ex to that degree and I'd also need to figure out how to get the photos off of my old drives.
(Speaking of that, I need to do it anyway since I have a lot of my old mainstream work on those HDDs. As it stands the only thing I can think of is to buy a Drobo or something and use my old Mac to transfer them to it over LAN. )

I love this, and it's technically impressive too, I know how hard nailing focus can be when a car does something unexpected. I have so many shots of shit like this that would be great if they were sharp.
While we're on the car photo thing, I've always really liked the effect with this one. People always ask how the hell I got the elevated angle, and it was actually dead simple, I just put my body on my monopod and held it up over my head with the self timer set to 5 seconds. Really easy and yet rarely used way to get something a little different.
I'd like to dig up the RAW and reprocess it though.

I'm about to switch from Nikon to Fuji, though, so my digital kit might shrink enough to make room for the Hassy.

Crop some stuff out. Crop on the left between the big building and the trees, or even in the middle of those trees, then crop the top and bottom as much as possible but not so much that you just get some sort of panoramic aspect ratio going on.
The strengths of your photo are the animals, the bridge and its very immediate surroundings and the hill in the back, and of course all the reflections of these things. Therefore you'll have a stronger composition if you cut down to that more.
>>2844677
taking the most mundane random uncomposed street shot ever and just turning it b&w doesn't make it interesting
>>2845095
I'd crop out anything right of the leftmost spotlight, it would improve the balance of the image and remove something interesting and distracting.

The bad thing, is she was doing acrobatics on that rock and my crazy albino girlfriend at the time was with me. She caught me looking with my camera in hand and told me to take the shot, I was afraid she would get mad for shooting a much more beautiful woman and I'm pissed because she was doing all kinds of tricks and shit on that rock and this was the only shot I popped off before she got off the rock.

Thanks for the input. There's not really 'an' original. It's a composite- that's how I got the long light streaks. It is HDR though, so the tonemapping part is valid. You think maybe a little easier on the HDR part of the editing then?

>>2851775
if it were a painting could you say the same thing?
>>2851570
Yes. And remember there's HDR and there's tonemapping. They're actually two totally unrelated things that in the consciousness of the whole photography world got welded together. You can assemble your shots into a HDR picture, adjust your exposure and be done with it, and if done right it will look like a normal picture, just one with a different exposure than the shots it was made from.
Tonemapping is a post processing technique that you can apply to any shot, HDR or not. Most of the time it's just some kind of high pass filter (or sometimes simple contrast reduction), and that's what ruins shots.
People married the two ideas together because they usually think that tonemapping is the goal of HDR, but you can do many other cool things with a HDR shot, like doing accurate blurs of the parts that would normally be bright enough to be clipped to white.
>>2851777
it's not a painting though, it's a mundane shot over processed to hell and back to make it seem more interesting than it is
>>2851791
I know, I was just wondering that's all
>>2851793
Well if it was a painting it would be impressive in a "that painter is really talented in a turbo-autistic kind of way" kind of way but it still wouldn't be a very compelling picture.
Honestly the whole tonemapping thing just makes it hard to know what you're looking at anyway and really judge. If you like the effect then look at shots with that effect until you get sick of it and join the rest of us in realising it's something that should probably be avoided altogether. Also look at the thumbnails, you can tell it's a tonemapped shot just from the thumbnail because it all seems to average to grey, you can't make out anything (because the lower frequencies are suppressed, which is all that's left in a thumbnail basically).
>>2847827
I like it too
>>2851743
I believe the comment was meant to be taken as "just because the gear is good doesnt mean the photo is good", as the metadata says it was taken with a 1Dmk4.
Anyway i kinda like this one, despite the horrid lighting and lack of a tripod. It was taken at the world championships for a robotics composition.

Alright, thanks for the input and tips. I guess I mistakenly associate 'tonemapping' and 'HDR' , since 'tonemapping ' is the name of one of the modes in Photomattix. Now I have some research and learning to do, thanks to your comment. It's got me curious- now I gotta know!
>>2851938
Honestly, I wish I could say I knew how to avoid/fix that. I have seen it a few times, but it usually does not happen in my HDRs. Maybe I'm lucky. lol, watch, now it will happen to me all the time, and it will become my worst enemy!!!

It breaks a couple rules, but the symmetry and leading lines make it ork really well! Any way to take down the color noise in the shadows a bit? If you're feeling really ambitious, maybe take out the signs of modern-ness (power lines and light pole). This could be a timeless image without those things.
You got a lot of DR out of this scene though. Clouds arent blown, and even the lowest part of the ground isnt black. Well play-ed.

Thanks! No, I didn't bracket -- that was a single exposure. Not sure why Lightroom for Android nuked the EXIF, but this was taken on an LG G4, 50 ISO at 1/1000th. Because it's not bracketed, there was a lot of noise at the bottom, but I figured the noise would be preferable to a blown out sky.

i think you need to work on defining your subject. the two you posted have no clear subject.
for the second one, i'm assuming the tall building is your subject. but the framing says otherwise. there is no need for that sign to be there and it draws attention away.
remember the rule of thirds.
and if you must have the sign in the shot, frame it better.
just work on subjects and framing, even if your picture is flat and boring, framing can make an image very pleasing.
got this from the review window of my truck while driving. love the way it turned out

>>2858086
Just do it on your pc. the only possible option for your phone is a photo editing app, and even so, I haven't heard of a photo editing app that changes sizing of pictures. most of them are for instagram hipsters anyway.
there is one way though. upload it to a site like flickr and download a smaller version and then delete the original file

Have some more shuttle program /p/.
We did great things with that old bird. I miss it. Story time I guess.
When I used to lurk /p/, long before they ever talked about killing off the Shuttle program, I was a cable guy. We used to watch them go and if I was on a job site I'd grab the customer and walk outside with them and watch them go, it was kind of what you did when you can see them being launched from your backyard.
There were a handful of pilots who were qualified to fly this 747 that carried the Shuttle back to Florida from California in the event it had to land at Edwards AFB in CA due to adverse weather in Florida. When they came in, these Air Force ex-fighter pilots would hot dog that damn 747 and fly it almost at stall speed barely 500 feet above the ground, all the way down the mainland next to US1 down to US192 40 miles south of KSC, then loop around 192 and head north up the beach to show it off for all the tourists, then land at Kennedy Space Center.
I managed to see them do this and they were so low to the ground you could almost read the pilot names on the side of the 747 near the cockpit, and I remember seeing the individual tiles on the Shuttle. Everyone would pull off US1 and watch it go by, we were proud to watch it go by.

Kennedy Space center is one of the only reasons to be proud of living/growing up in Florida. You could see the shuttles on the way up from my backyard, though, much farther away. Every kid in school goes to Kennedy, the shuttle program always has meant a lot to me as well.

I'm from chicago, but I have family in florida.
My cousins, who are in their very early teens, have never been to the kennedy space center, and barely even know what it is. As someone who grew up with interests in space and amatuer astronomy and all that, it made me kinda sad :/

Love the video game look. This crop stuck out to me more though.
