A noisy, chaotic mess of nothing that looks like vomit in the thumbnail (and you would be surprised when you find out how good pictures almost always have a good thumbnail). There is no composition, no insight into what it was about the subject that you wanted to show. There are distracting out of focus elements in the foreground. There is no balance of colors and compositionally dark and light elements. The exposure is NOT proper because it is not balanced. What's with the crushed blacks on the center twigs?
My guess: You bought a prime lens with lotsa BOKEH and thought this automatically makes you a better photographer.
My tip: Get into composition, reductionism, focus, balance. Out of focus areas want to be composed too. It's not like you're throwing them into invisibility just because you throw them out of focus. Use depth of field like a tool just like any other tool in photography.

This is a situation where something in the foreground could give an even better scope. The foreground is a bit too barren. Try such a shot on self timer and walk into the frame as if walking that path and look at the difference. It doesn't have to be a human in the front. Many things can give more depth, but it's an act of balance.

I would like to add that the Z1C is not actually a 20 Megapixel phone and the resolution is merely interpolated. Additionally, the fact you took it with a phone makes it even worse because it's impossible to guess the subject size (and therefor distance to lens/DOF) just by looking at the composition. In some instances this is intentional and all is well, but not in yours because nothing looks intentional in this picture.

Try to use a third party app other than sony's to take pictures in 20 megapixel resolution. Any third party photo app will only show resolutions up to 8 megapixels. That is because the sensor is actually just 8 megapixels and the 23 mp setting that you ONLY get with the sony app is the camera interpolating the pixels to 23 mp using software. By the way, this is true up to the Xperia Z5 compact which I own as well as the Z1 compact. They are rather okay cameras but 20 megapixels/23 megapixels is just marketing illusion. Not that 20/23 megapixels would do any good with a sensor that tiny anyway.

I personally really, really like the colors in this, it looks like cool/purple colored film and instantly reminded me of the Japanese film photo thread. I think this works very well for a certain type of aesthetic blogger, instagram, tumblr, whatever.

Composition-wise, I like it a lot, but I feel like it would be much better if the kid was in focus. I noticed you shot in AP mode, and it set your shutter to 1/2500 and at an aperture of 2.8. You've got plenty of room to bump up that f-stop and use a lower shutter speed, ensuring more gets in focus. Take advantage of that by shooting more in manual mode.

Also, if you want to make this feel less snapshitty, actually waiting and making your subject make eye contact with the lens can help. Often the gaze of a person can be in essence the true subject of the photograph. Of course not everytime it's necessary for eye contact, but you'll like your photos more if you can attach the real emotion of a person to it, even if the perceived emotion/reaction to the camera doesn't reflect what was actually going on.
