last one got very big and is exactly one month old so here's a new one
shot young thug last night. never actually got confirmed my credentials because his management sucks but I got in fine and snapped a few photos
shooting a festival in atlanta next weekend, shooting bonnaroo in a month, and doing a tiny tiny tour with a band at the end of the month. things are good. maybe some EDM festival too but idk yet.

rap shows r wild. very crowded and difficult to move around. I found a good vantage point and oh the 70-200 rules so much. I got a good deal on it and it was a little stiff but it's loosened up since then.

Any general tips for not completely fucking up concert photos?
>>2834429
Get a fast 35mm or 50mm lens for the low light and shoot wide open.
>>2834429
be good at editing and good at knowing what settings to use the second you see the conditions
DON'T shoot wide open. I'm tired of out of focus faces and tack sharp guitar heads
>>2834451
>DON'T shoot wide open. I'm tired of out of focus faces and tack sharp guitar heads
That's a problem with the person behind the camera. Not the camera/lens.
>>2834467
well yeah obviously
but most of the time when I see people shooting wide open that's what happens. whatever
I just think there's always a way to compensate settings and shoot more narrow because slower shutter and grain hurt less than out of focus subjects. that's just my opinion
>>2834485
man what kind of lighting are you working with, christmas lights?
at that point I would just use a flash if it was an appropriate show
Gotta love that 70-200.
>>2834618
Many times, they're shit venues with a matte black stage, and only lights coming from behind or directly above the artist (so no light hitting faces at all) Or only a couple of LED panels bolted to the wall 20 feet away blasting out a single hot-spot on the stage, etc. It sucks.
I usually hate the look of flash in concert environments, but I've been experimenting with how to get it to look balanced and good, and haven't nailed it yet.

would you guys mind heading over there to check them out and offer me some advice? thanks!
>>2836403
taking photos of bands with a flash is fun and easier but you'll have to eventually leave that game if you wanna shoot bigger shows
it's hard to offer advice besides getting creative with your flash placement (off camera) or ditching it overall

Shit, this is my one of my favorite bands. Do you have more? I've always wanted to shoot their shows, haven't got to yet.
>>2834289
nice shot, I like how it really captures how noisy the concert must have been.
So people with press passes, what exactly do you do with your photos after you take them? Do you send all of them to the newspaper/media outlet you're taking photos for? Do you have to do a small write up about the event you photographed or anything like that? What's the process like behind everything outside of actually taking photos?
>>2837101
Second in this. Do I need to be working for the press to get press passes? Will they just let me walk in with my camera if i pay for a ticket to the show?
>>2837101
for the most part I'm shooting FOR a publication so I edit them and send them over when I'm finished
for some jobs I do writing too but usually I just stick to photos
for example I'm currently in a car on the way to Atlanta to a festival. we have a document for the whole project. I send the editor my photos and everyone sends their own shit as well. here's part one of the document

shooting for a pub is one option. the other option is getting in through the artist and their publicist. if you get a press pass you can walk in with your camera and you don't have to pay (unless you're shooting arenas, then you need to ask for a ticket AND a photo pass)

It depends on the show.
Small venues: Most will let you get camera inside. Even with national bands. Just inquire.
Medium venues: You can contact the venue directly but many times it's a better bet to contact the band or their management. They will put you in the photographer's list. Most of the times you'll need to have your ticket. If the band's cool and you still don't have a ticket, they will put you in the list as well.
Big venues: This you'd need to go thru the event's promotor. They will need you to be accredited to a media outlet. Most of the time you won't need a ticket but you will only get to shoot the standard: first 3 songs then will be escorted out. These venues have a photo pit. If you go thru the band you might be able to shoot the whole show, but it will be more difficult since we are talking about big acts.
Festivals: Depends, some allow any type of camera (no tripod, no monopod, no flash) and some don't allow 'pro cameras' meaning to them detachable lens. I shoot Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in San Francisco every year, it's a free festival and cameras are allowed. Going thru the promotors you might get access to the pit. You will have to be accredited, but you really shouldn't bother since you can shoot up front if you get there early.
>>2838515
Small/Medium venue.. just tell them that they will be able to use the images for social media just for credit.
So I managed to land my first gig thats actually going to require a pass. I got lucky and was at a small show last week and ended up meeting with the people that preformed that night. Told them who I was and what I do anf after some texts over the next few days they hooked me up with a pass for the House of Blues in Downtown Disney on monday. Its some reggae show. They're even offering to bring me on tour with pay. So excited for the possible opportunity
Anyways. I just have my 50mm and the 8mm fisheye
Should I rent any lenses for this or do you guys think I'll be good with what I have? The place isn't that big but If I want to get on the balcony I may want a zoom
P.S.
Hows everything at that fest carlo? Having fun?
>>2839134
I think you're kinda set with what you have and can take good images. Maybe the fisheye is too wide. I shows I shoot most my lenses, but I think I use the 17-40 f4L about 50% of the show. I try to use the 24-105 f4L but always take it off and go for the 85 1.8. Maybe I take a few shots with the 70-200 f4L IS. I tend to like having some nice closeups on faces and shit.
I have a nice messenger type LowePro bag for shows.

I want to be, I just got into their music last month, and I'm trying to shoot their show next month in Portland, OR. I've sent out the email to their PR people. I know it's super early to do that, I usually do that about two weeks before show, but I want a 'Yes' or 'No' early so I can still buy tickets to see them if I get said 'No' to. The venue they're playing it is meh, but shooting at it is really good because there's a lot of great angles you can get.
I'm shooting a show on Monday, The Rocket Summer, and I will post a few photos here in this thread on Tuesday afternoon. It's at a venue I've never been to, so I'm a bit intimidated, but confident I can get some good shots.
I've been really busy lately, and haven't looked at upcoming shows to try to shoot.

Shot ISO 10000 all night. Then some good venues in L.A like the Echoplex or The Fillmore in San Francisco, will be shooting between 1000-2500. Keeping in mind my zooms are f4, have the 40mm 2.8 and the 85 1.8.
I'm tired and still have one more day left but things are going good. my back hurts. 70-200 is a godsend.
I'd reply to everyone right now but I'm gonna post a few and pass out. here's walk the moon.

I was supposed to get a portrait at 2pm but got an email pushing it to 3. ended up getting a text from their TM saying 4 so I met at the spot and waited 30 minutes and they never showed up. I called him and he said they were having trouble getting into the festival so he had to cancel but he could maybe swing it after their performance. I asked if I could get backstage access for their set and he said it was up to the stage manager (i don't think it is) and when I objected he just didn't reply. o well
I waited for him at the VIP entrance and he showed up 5 minutes late and the guy guarding the entrance was being irrational and not letting us in even though it's literally the tour manager with escort privilege or whatever. the TM gets pissed and goes backstage again and brings I think the stage manager? he was super high up and ended up escorted like 8 people along with us. 3 others were photographers.
so we go backstage and we're hanging around waiting for everyone to finish up. everyone has about a 5 minute time range and they're just doing normal photos or whatever. I had this idea while watching people's silhouettes waiting and edited a bit in photoshop. I took one with flash at another location but it didn't really look good.
COOLEST band I've ever chatted with. the drummer is into photography and wanted to see the photos really bad and we talked gear. I was wearing a band shirt for a local punk band and the vocalist was asking me all about it. it's cool to me when bands are human and especially at moments like these.
then I saw my friends in foxing and we hung backstage while scarfing down the leftovers from the artist catering. good ass shit.
a few more from their set because more than half of my exported photos are from their set lmao

I got an email saying that their set was going to be LAST three songs and I was a little confused. then I did my research and realized that they go INSANE during the last three. jumping in the crowd and running through barricades and shit. I only told one other photographer (because he was the only one I was talking to) and I didn't wanna tell him how much shit was about to happen because I wanted it to be surprising so I just told him to get his wide ready

AT THE DRIVE-IN. shit.
so I was assigned to shoot florence + the machine and I was really upset because I wanted to shoot ATDI. I was talking to another photographer about it and he was in the same boat. florence ended up going on like 9 minutes early so we got to shoot her set.
the other photographer frantically started patting my back and I looked at him and he was like "THEY DIDN'T START YET" so we started booking it. by the time we were halfway through the grounds, we randomly heard a guy on a golf cart yell at us to get in? we were confused but jumped in and they just saw us and felt we needed a ride. they ended up bringing us right backstage to where the photo pit goes and we got in 30 seconds before they started. wouldn't have gotten this photo if the kind golf cart folk weren't there.

I saw them in 07 and people threw bottles of piss on the stage. Omar slammed his guitar into his amp making a extremely loud noise and they stormed off mad about indian burial grounds or something. They played for maybe 20 minutes or something.
Saw them again in 09 at sasquatch and they were sound. Cedric threw a cymbal that I had to dodge and he was slam dancing on top of amps.
I'd like to see ATDI.
Do you have any SDRE photos by any chance?

These are all super cluttered, with bad bland lighting, where the subject gets totally lost. There is next to no processing in support of... whatever your idea is here.
Maybe you're just going for "Weird for weird's sake" but it's coming across as a teenager trying to be edgy and different without really knowing what he's doing. Being different for a good reason is great, but being different for the sake of being different doesn't really impress anyone.
>>2842244
His music is based in psychedelic rock, and his personality is pretty far out which I liked since we got some interesting shots because of it. We were going for something obscure, and I liked the cluttered-ness of our storage area for our grand hall. I'll attach a photo that we did outdoors.
I did plenty of adjustments in Lightroom, at least I think so, when editing these photos. I would like some advice on how you would edit them to make the shitpic better than it is.

Well again, they don't seem "far out" they just seem unfocused. Like you were in a building, and saying "Let's make him seem out there.... uuuuuhhhh... well most people wouldn't stand in a wash bin, so why don't you stand in the wash bin?" There's no idea other than that there's a lack of idea.
You've done a lot in lightroom to correct and normalize the image, it seems, but nothing to push the image to a theme or idea (which again, supports the concept that you didn't have one)
Who is he? Why is he in this closet? What is this telling me about his music, or his personality? Is he a blue collar janitor in someone's warehouse? Why does he have his guitar with him? Is he playing it for the storage closet? Is the floor buffer guy his dad, and it was bring your son to work day? You're just leaning the entire image on the "huh?" reaction of the viewer, but when the viewer asks "huh?" they expect an answer, or they dismiss the photo and leave.
>>2842253
Thank you for the input, it was very helpful, unlike this anon >>2842233
That's my biggest struggle when it comes to portraiture work is capturing that emotion from somebody and portraying an idea or theme without context given to the image.
We didn't exactly have a set idea, other than get some photos of him to please his record label since all of his photos are very out dated. This is a lame excuse, but he has very little time to do anything, so we had to do it while at work, and couldn't get a grand idea and go out some where else to make the images portray something more.
>nothing to push the image to a theme or idea
I honestly wouldn't know where to start in the first place with this, even if we had a solid idea. I know my way around Photoshop decently well, but when editing photos I tend to stick with normalizing them, like how you put it, in Lightroom.

carlo are you kinda drunk
It's ok to be after a show
That's when you can relax and celebrate
Any tips for me shooting a friends band tonight in a working mens club (old people audience) that they're paying me for. I am waiting on a lens however using 18-55 kit and 1.8 50mm? First time shooting live music and doing a few shows for them but what type of things should I look out for shooting, also does everyone edit B&W because of the different colour lights?
>>2844383
The main lens I have is the 50 mm 1.8 and I don't think it's too bad.
I haven't had my gear for too long so I still have a good heap of saving to do

You got the new STM one or the old one? Because the old one will QUICKLY limit you as soon as you get better and better at taking photos. Focus is way too slow to keep up with what you need for concerts.
>>2844383
Use the 18-55 at 18 with as long as a shutter speed you can manage before blurring everything to shit
do not be afraid to pump up the ISO to the limits of your sensor if necessary
be prepared to decide if everything needs to be in B&W (if the lights are too shitty for example, if everything is pure red and blue you're fucked, go B&W. Don't mix colours and bw, try one OR the other.)
If you can't get a somewhat level angle to the people playing, raise your camera and focus with live view.
If there are lasers, don't live view or you run a good chance of throwing your camera away, but it doesn't look like this will be a case of lasers.

The new one
Bought it last month at best buy
Im thinking about going wider on my next purchase but I do have a 8mm fisheye
idk
I have time to think about it
>>2844614
imho superwides lose their appeal quickly, an 8mm fish will be good for a couple of shots and that's it. If you're on crop, get a Sigma 18-35 1.8, it'll be amazing for this kind of stuff.
Took this yesterday with its "big brother", the 24-35 f/2. I love how it can go wider than the 18-35, but I think 24mm effective is the "sweet spot", after that you're looking at specialty focal lenghts suited for only a few angles.

Your goal should be capturing the feeling of the night,if you don't have the perfect colors then you have to deal with it. It's a shame from a photographers point of view, sure, but you are doing a reportage, not a fashion shoot where you can control everything.
I have countless pictures like the one attached, it was taken on the third floor of a Techno club I sometimes work in. They usually have nice light and the light guys are great to work with, but on that night there was no VJ there and the DJs didn't really understand the program, so the light you see was on all night. Sure, every picture I took on that floor looks exactly like that one, but that's just the way it was that night. Are all of your pictures red and blue? Well then because the night and the concert were red and blue.
Get your camera insured, don't be afraid to shoot from the crowd and the moshpits like most people on here, >muh photopit and return with true pictures, not well lit stuff without any energy.
See >>2840243, everybody would have made that shot BW, but the colors make it a better, more energetic picture, unlike >>2840451, which is a similar, better picture, yet not as fun.

He has a 50mm lens for the longer end. 18mm give you more freedom of hand holding because wider angle. Also it's f/3.5 on the wide end and not a dim black 5.6
>what number 2
Bayer sensors register only 25% of blue and 25% red. Meaning that pure, strong red/blue lights will clip the SHIT out of the photo with 0 recovery margin.
For a newbie, it's the first reason for shit photos.
see >>2844612 it was only bright blue and pitch black, almost clipped.
>What number 3
It's either that or look at the focus assist grid and ballpark your composure from there. Since you're not usually using speedlites for this sort of work, you're better off using live view.
Pic related was raised above the crowd, live view, focus, snap.
I have my shutter separated from AF so I don't have to turn AF off to do this, I can just focus manually and snap. (of course, with full time manual focus lenses.)

you gotta get used to shooting from the crowd. I work at a venue where 1-2 shows a year have a barricade and yeah there's other vantage points but you're gonna have to shoot from the crowd at some point
speaking of vantage points, stop ONLY using the photo pit. there's only been a handful of times in my entire life where I was denied shooting after the three songs were over. besides arenas/amphitheaters, you'll probably see that once or twice EVER. usually just security not knowing what they're talking about. it's cool you get to stand in front of the stage for a little bit but man. you better be hitting the balcony if there is one and you should take a few from the crowd if you can. I try to move around and not be annoying because I know there's always people who paid and get frustrated when someone stands in front of them with a camera and doesn't move
only get a fisheye if you're touring, have a residency gig (even partial), a big bag, or if you like to waste money and space. get literally any other super wide. if you shoot canon, the 17-40 is basically the cheapest L lens out there and it works wonders. I've gotten some of my best photos ever with it. (these were with it btw >>2834292 >>2835845 >>2839431 >>2839435 >>2844248 >>2844249 >>2844250 >>2844251 >>2844256 >>2844257 >>2844259)
and also please stay away from B&W as much as you can. it's the next worst thing next to a speedlite imo. if you HAVE to use it, then sure use it but otherwise you need to learn to live without it. obviously I get it if you're dealing with awful colors but listen, you gotta start experimenting. deep blues and reds should be the only excuse really. anything else you can work with hue saturation. also don't forget about COLOR TEMPERATURE, vibrance, and saturation. vibrance SAVED me at my job before I started talking to the lighting people more. then when I combined the two it made my life so much easier.
now let's play a game with retouching, next post

Here's my go at editing your RAW image in the same way I typically edit my concert photos. Brought some detail out from the drum kit, but there's not much to work with. Still like the shot though :) B&W works better in my opinion on this shot because you can actually see more detail in the singers face, and rest of the shot.

I use my Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 for shots of the performer and of the crowd together in one frame like >>2842748 this shot. Or of the the whole crowd, or of the whole band from center stage. I believe it's a very, very helpful to have in your kit, but not exactly necessary. Not a waste of money though, I love that lens so much because it's sharp as hell wide-open, built like a tank, and I use it surprisingly a lot.
I just love Rokinon's lenses in general, just order their 85mm f/1.4 today, should be here later in the week :)
Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, such a beautiful venue, but very odd that everyone stayed seated. So I felt like a dick when I stood in front of somebody for a brief moment to snap a shot. Next time I'm renting a 70-200 if I shoot there again, or at another similar venue.

Didn't know they had a photo pit, cool. The schnitz is normally a classical music concert hall (and the venue for the Oregon Symphony), which is why it's sitting only. I've played there quite a few times, cool place. Did you email the band about going to shoot there?
>>2844871
They don't have a pit, the "pit area" is reserved for people who pay a shit ton of money or writers. They set up two rows of chairs in the area that would be the pit. You have to shoot from only stage right or stage left, but while I was walking over to the other side of the stage I would stop in the center isle and snap a few pictures.
Pic related. Wish I stepped back a bit, I would've cut off the musicians on the left and the right. But I have pictures taken on my 50D that captures a bit more. Will post.

Mine was $500 because I decided to buy the AE chipped version of Rokinon 14mm f/2.8. It has focus confirmation, you control the aperture from the camera, and not on the lens. They have a cheaper version, same AMAZING optics, for $340.

I'm not him, but I can vouch for Canon's 100mm f/2.8 Macro IS L lens. (Pic related, btw)
I know - why a macro lens? But this thing is just so DAMN LIGHT. Focus speed was never an issue, it's snappy as hell.
If weight (and price!) isn't an issue, you should look for a 70-200 2.8, but honestly I find that in these situations weight is hugely important. You can balance that 100 all day, while the 70-200 can get in the way, if you're in the crowd. Plus, Canon's 70-200 2.8 IS II is so good compared to the others that you will eventually regret not going all the way, if you pick up one of the cheaper ones.
I'd look for an used one, and if you value speed over IS, there's the forgotten one - Canon's 100mm f/2 lens.
On a 7d, it becomes a 160mm which is fairly long but should help with bigger stages.
If you're not planning on moving to FF soon or you're ok with reselling the lens for 30-40% less later on, Sigma just released its 50-100 f/1.8 crop lens.

Well you gotta value it yourself. On crop, I'd keep the 85 and use that one - 136mm is a good multi purpose tele. The 100mm would be redundant and less useful in general.
24-70 on crop is a useless focal range, so I'd stay clear of that. (all your shots are on a 7d, I guess that's your camera, right?)
Did you try bringing the 85 along for concerts? It'd work nicely, you could just fashion up some kind of belt pouch to swap lenses on the go.

I'm the guy you're replying to. Most of the acts I shoot are opening acts for larger headliners, so even when there are nice lights set up at the venue, they're never running for the opening acts. Such a shame. My boss, who hires me to go, will send me photos every once in a while of what she wants me to get, and they're always big arena shots, of Kanye and Beiber, with fog and lasers and light boards on stage pointing out at the crowd, and spot lights, and she says "anon, we need to figure out what you're doing wrong, because the photos I get from you never look like this" and I try to explain it, but... yeah.
>>2846059

Can confirm, my 85 f/1.8 on my 7D was a great combo for events. Great focus, bright aperture, nice lens overall.

Dunno if this can help you, but I used the 7d as a nightlife camera (my main "work", I find it hard getting paid stuff for concerts in Italy) for 2+ years, I dunno if you ever had any issues with it, but I discovered later along the road that it's prone to missing focus WILDLY for no reason at all, at random times with no consistency. If it happens to you and you never figured out why, well don't go crazy like me - it's the camera.
>Sony A7S
It's a nice camera on paper, with a great sensor, but I'm still not sold on using those for concerts and events where your camera will take abuse, you need constant grip on it even with a heavy lens, and need to focus quickly in pitch black situations.
Plus I need to often recompose a little in post production by cropping, I just can't get the perfect framing right all the time when there's so much stuff going on, and the 12mp of the A7S will limit you a lot in that.
>i will check about the 136mm
kek just call it 85mm or it becomes confusing as hell
shooting say anything/mewithoutyou/teen suicide tomorrow and maybe the next day too. my friend is dating a member of one of the bands and is getting us in but we're driving separate and I don't know how left out of things I'm gonna be so I might just do one date
also doing a single day of some EDM festival with skrillex and diplo playing but I'm not 100% sure if I can have my camera. I have zero friends in that field so I can't ask questions about it. I'm getting an artist guest pass so I don't know. I'll find out the hard way. might just bring one lens and no bag.
>>2845695
the number one rule about making money with concert photography: if you're asking for the job, you shouldn't be asking for money. of course there are exceptions but you need to keep in mind that there are multiple photographers on every date of their six week tour. they do not want to pay for photos they'll get from someone else for free
if money comes up or you get ASKED to shoot, you can then bring it up. otherwise, you're shooting pro bono.
>>2845911
70-200 2.8 IS. you could get the one without IS and save money (or a third party). I love it and I found a great deal on it.
>>2846069
my major concern with getting an A7S is less about the durability and more about the autofocus. focus peaking is great on manual but I can't do manual on a band with members that run around on stage
70-200 f4L is or 2.8 no is?
>>2846315
2.8 since it'll be in the dark.
>>2846315
oh I love how light the f4 is but get the 2.8 no IS
get a third party one to save more money
>>2846332
I'm worried about a third party one having trouble with focus. I was planning to buy a very used Canon 70-200 sometime in the future
>>2846378
the best part about buying lenses is that they don't change in value so you could just sell it back to someone else if you don't like it
that's what I was gonna do but I found too good of a deal on mine to resist
>>2846301
>is less about the durability and more about the autofocus
And battery life, remember that, you will have to carry spare batteries or risk getting "stranded" with a dead camera.
>>2846315
2.8, you need any extra stop you can get to stop motion. IS is just a cool extra, but of limited usefulness in this case.
>>2846649
I get that but I shot a festival with my friend and it wasn't THAT big of a deal as long as he had a couple in his bag and plus they're tiny
it's definitely a concern but not as big as autofocus because that actually effects my photos
So I know this is a bit of a stretch but I know there's some people in California in here...
Has anyone ever shot at The Observatory in Orange County?
Do you need a certain color wristband depending on which room you're shooting in?
And is there a third color needed for backstage?
Shooting there next week in the small room but I also just bought a bunch of blank colored wristbands so I might try to get kinda crafty...
So... apparently i got a photopass for copenhell
This time i think i will invest more time walking around and taking photos of the concertgoers. In the last festival i did a little shooting of metal vest and patches, which i find fucking amazing. But i suck taking creep photos im damn shy, dunno why.
Any other ideas to recreate the vibe of an open air festival and not just focus on the bands
also, any request of the bands you want to see?

yo concert bros, any tip for someone just starting out? pretty new to photo in general, but not a complete dummy
>>2848296
It's shitty how much this is dependant on good gear
avoid dive bar lighting where possible, you need a camera that can shoot well at high ISO (If you can get something that will shoot at 3200 clean then you should be fine) and fast lenses.
You could go with cheap f1.8 primes to start off but you'll need stuff that can shoot at f2.8 at a minimum
Avoid flash as much as possible
Try get into good venues as soon as possible though, good stage lighting is the key factor in getting good stage shots, if it means you have to be the rank fucking amateur in a big venue being bullied by pro photographers than so be it
Also network with bands as much as possible, you get the gigs from the band members, go to open mic nights and shoot the shit with performers, loads of them will have EP launches and shit they would like you at.
>>2848301
have a canon 6D and only have a 50 mm 1.8 at the moment kek pretty bare. why avoid flash? would it not be good to have one that I can use as I please? thanks for response.
>>2845982
You have an Instagram or something I can follow? these are some amazing shots man
>>2848301
I know there's 2 folks on /p/ who get some gorgeous shots with Olympus OMD EM5s and cheap 1.8 primes. It's not all that dependent on gear, a £500 set up will serve you fine most of the time. The main thing is being prepared. If, like me, you prefer a one camera one lens set up so you can enjoy the gig without worrying too much, it's wise to scope out the venue and work out what focal length will serve you best, and if it'll be bright enough for an f4 zoom to be of any use. I've been stuffed too many times by not having the right lens for the job - going to tiny indie bars with a 135mm when a 28mm or 35mm would have been perfect and only being able to get face shots for instance
>>2848308
Put simply most places won't let you use it, some will confiscate your camera for using it.
>>2848308
You don't use a flash at live events. It kills the mood (flattens the lighting, you want to capture the performance and the "feel" of the stage, flash tends to kill that.) and might annoy the fuck out of people. You can use the flash focus assist if you want but any decent camera shouldn't need it (ffs not even my 5d2 needs it.)
50 1.8 might be too slow focusing to keep pace, it's also not wide nor telephoto enough for most purposes. You really want to add a wider lens in.
>>2848217
>C O N V E R G E
Already seen them and i know they're a very energic band, they move a lot and the crowd uses to go mad, circle pits, surfing etc, that one should be very fun to take photos at.

I shoot with a 6D and it works great, 50mm 1.8 is fine starting out and if you like shooting gigs you can look into something longer and a wide lens later
>why avoid flash?
Musicians rightfully hate flash because it distracts them, normally camera flash is bad enough but pro photographers flashing musicians is really bad and there are countless videos of photographers getting attacked by musicians for it, it can look good but get permission from the band before using flash and even then use it sparingly
>>2848311
>Put simply most places won't let you use it, some will confiscate your camera for using it.

>>2848317
I personally really dislike the flash because makes a wall of light that fucks the textures and DoF. Expecially if you pop it directly to the front. I know 2 guys who make really amazing photos and they use the flash directed to the ceiling.

>>2848588
Can you post an example of the problem you're having? You should be spot metering some skin and basing your average exposure off of that. If you're letting the camera choose exposure it would be picking dark clothes and overexposing
>>2848592
god speed anon, enjoy all the backstage access you'll get

One good option is turning the flash backwards with the bounce card up, if you have anything remotely reflective near your back. Even a guy with a white shirt, really. It does help.
Pic related is just a random snapshit I had already edited, but I remember having the flash backwards for this and a white wall. This is the best possible situation and RARELY it will happen for concerts, but for small stages it might be a possibility and often the subject doesn't even notice the flash.

There is no venue out there that will let you shoot their paying clients in the face with a flash that powerful, and that often. Venues don't generally put super strong flashes in the pit between the performers and the crowd, pointed directly into the crowd's face.
>>2848657

I've been doing nightlife for nearly 3 years and I've done some concerts on and off.
I don't use my flash on concerts, with few exceptions, but as i said
>Just don't be a retard about it and they won't even notice.
Use it for SOME shots when you KNOW you need it then shut it off. It's less noticeable than a bright light coming from stage towards the crowd. Most people won't even notice as it lasts just - literally - a split second and there's so much shit going on that unless you're wrecking the speedlight by cycling at max power for a full minute, nobody will really notice.
Oh, I'm also shooting at ISO 1600-3200 / 1250-2500 with an f/2 lens so the flash power is WAY down.
How do I know that people don't notice? I tried. Many times when I use it (not at concerts though) people ask me if the flash fired because they didn't see it. Only times I've heard complaints is when I accidentally flashed people in the face outside of the show area. Happens.
But as I said, as a general rule, people won't notice that much: again, don't. be. a. retard. Don't shoot a fuckton in a row. Don't shoot the flash at high power (don't stop down, don't shoot at low iso) and you'll be fine.
I'm not saying to ABSOLUTELY DO IT, because I usually DON'T at concerts (also because there's nothing to bounce on 99% of the time) but what I'm saying is that it's VIABLE and not the big deal you people make it out to be.
How do you get into shooting concerts?
A local park near me has a music in the park type thing once a week during summer, is there a good way to shoot there?
>>2848308
6D is perfect and 1.8 is good. get a 24-105 if you're gonna get one more lens. $500.
flash sucks because it makes photos look good but all similar and most big venues don't allow it. if you're gonna use it, you need to use it creatively (like mounting it on the wall)
